Next NFL Blackout Victim...

Right - the CBS stations in the area are already scheduled to carry the Chargers/Cowboys late game, per the NFL Maps page.

This week the Rams are blacked out. The Chiefs are trying to sell 5,500 tickets for their game against the Browns (loser slides into the 4th pick in the draft). They barely beat last week's deadline.

The Chargers just beat the blackout deadline this morning, selling out their game against Cincinnati. This game will also be seen (besides the secondary markets) in New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Las Vegas, all of Arizona, Atlanta, Flint, Lansing, and western West Virginia. The Bengals, of course, will be playing with heavy hearts once again, now with wide receiver Chris Henry dying from his injuries this morning.

CBS' other late game, Oakland at Denver, will be seen in the entire Rocky Mountain region, plus New Mexico, South Dakota, and of course Northern California.

The Green Bay at Pittsburgh game on Fox (4:15pm ET) will be seen everywhere but in Denver (Broncos home on CBS), most of Washington state and central & southwestern Florida (Tampa Bay at Seattle is the other Fox late game).

Wow, with an eight-game winnin streak, you'd think ticket sales would be a little more brisk?

Here's a bold prediction: If the AFC Championship comes down to the Chargers and the Bengals, tickets will sell out at the last possible moment.

Yep, the Chiefs will be blacked out for the first time since December 16, 1990. It only covers the counties in the Kansas City and Topeka markets.

Two changes on the schedule for tomorrow...two games from the Fox early schedule were moved to the late slot, due to weather conditions: Chicago at Baltimore and San Francisco at Philadelphia.

The blackout watch for this week involves three teams that haven't had one yet this year. It is very likely that the Browns will have one for the first time since coming back to the league a decade ago. Also, Atlanta might not sell out given that they're out of the playoff hunt and all. The real shocker is Miami, which hasn't had a regular season blackout in 15+ years (they have the dubious distinction of having the only blacked out playoff game this decade back in 2000-01), and is playing another team in the same position as they are in the crowded AFC wild card hunt (Houston).

Kind of amazing that the Tampa Bay Bucs have never been blacked out this season, even though they're at the bottom of the barrel with only two wins.

Miami and Houston play each other...so if it's blacked out in the home markets, who gets the game and would that qualify as the smallest footprint of a NFL game?

I would think places in Florida and Texas over 75 miles from Miami and Houston respectively would get it, since no station within 75 miles of those two cities would be allowed to air it. And it would be far from the smallest footprint of an NFL game.

As it turned out, no games are being blacked out today. It's not as bad this season as people predicted all things considered. Next week could be a whole different matter, though.

My mistake, Houston would get the game no matter what since NFL rules require that every road game of a home team gets televised no matter what.

In the case of Houston @ Miami, the Miami and West Palm Beach markets would have been blacked out (WPEC "CBS 12" out of Palm Beach County can be seen in Broward County, which falls under the Miami market).

We end the season with the Rams and Raiders being blacked out. Overall 8.6% of games were blacked out, far less than the 20% some predicted. Playoff games can be blacked out (and some have in the past), but I doubt it, although the Vikings did come close last year.
