No new oldies station is going to beat KLUV.
But there is definitely a niche for a pure 60's play against KLUV, which is playing "most" of its material from the 70's with even a smattering of the 80's. For a rimshot signal, selecting an unduplicated niche is a particualrly good idea
KLUV has 20 years heritage.
Heritage is about the most valuless quality in radio... and all entertainment related fields. You are only as good as what you did the last time a listener tuned in. If your star morning show left, or you played a couple of songs in a row the listener detested, they leave. If you do such things a few times in a row, they do not come back. The average listener has multiple favorite stations, and it is very easy to simply leave one that is not doing a good job.
They have had their ups and downs in management
And the listener cares about this in what manner?
but the music has been consistant for the most part.
It's more like they have not had a direct competitor, for the most part.
It would take a solid 5 years of CONSISTANT programming/marketing, a well known local morning show to beat KLUV. It can be done.
If someone could outmarket and outprogram them, it would take about 6 to 9 months. Most music battles are fairly decisively won or lost very early on.
If abc puts oldies on 96.7 they will have to run imus in the morning. Not a good match.
As mentioned before, ABC has nothing to do with 96.7. And Shannon's format duplicates the music on KLUV only minimally; Imus is a very tight demograsphic fit, too. 96.7 can not beat KLUV unless they suddenly figure out how to moved the tower to Cedar Hill.
Anyway, Citadel says they are not going to do it, so we are just arguing for fun.
