Oh My God-Oldies 1480 Now Playing 70's!

BINGO! GreatOldiesGuy... More condensed signals that can niche to the communities near them CAN sell to the upper demo at such a lower rate and do what it takes to get traffic in with tie in promotions Station-Listener-Business and even find a Charity to benefit.... Thus, the joke is on the big boys... Let the 'carp' nibble some good billing in the businesses that can't afford the rate card at the Class "B" or "C" monster FM..... I am on the edge of buying a underdeveloped AM that has some advantages in a Micropolitan county below a major top 50 metro.... 80k in pop, and four AM's and one FM on the commerical side.... No to little localism and I am licking my chops to give that town and county something they will take ownership in.... Classic music, news, weather, sports and community events... Give me your weak, tired and elderly little stations that can be the 'hometown giant'... Old radio can work... We see it at several AM's in Indiana... "Skip"

"One who knows" does know what he is talking about. Go into most any family resturant , doctor or dentist offices, the big box stores and they are playing the safe sounding Oldies of 60's & early "70s music, and surprising my grandchildren never complain about it even when I have WDJO 1480 on in the car.
I have lot's of my friends in their late 50's & 60's who make an annual $100K + income, money to spend , who pay cash for most of their big purchases with little or no monthly credit card debt. I just puchased a new car from Walt Sweeney Ford ,one of the dealers that advertise on my favorit radio station Oldies 1480, I want to support the station advertisers that plays my music, and that is what I told the sales person at the dealership when ask how did I know about their dealership.
Thanks to" one who knows", he does know that we young seniors are being underserved by most advertisers and their media agencies and made the point.
Thanks to Oldies 1480 for what they do for their listeners everday , please don't knock them for playing a few 70's songs from time to time , it does not bother me.
A point worthy of noting where WDJO is concerned...those of us who are "long term" listeners (if such a thing is possible with a 3 or so year old station) can't help but notice that many of the sponsors who are on there today were there when the station began. The Ford dealer, Bella Luna (my wife still proudly shows off the picture of her & Kathy Young taken there) & North College Hill Bakery are just three that come to mind. These businesses simply could not thrive, especially in a down economy, if they were not getting good bang for the buck in the advertising choices. Radio works, Oldies work..it's the 20 somethings running the ad agencies that are missing the boat....and the well to do, debt free 'young seniors' that are buying said boat.

True. A few 70's hits mixed in with the oldies won't hurt them.
Oldies is one of the best music formats for an AM. This audience
grew up with AM.

In some markets, the Classic Hits format is rebranded as oldies.
This is mostly 70's music. This format works great on FM. But,
it will flop on AM. Why? These listeners grew up on FM. They
have always listened to FM. They aren't switching to AM.
So, if you are on AM, you must program for AM listeners.

Sound like these guys will do fine. Great to have an oldies
station on AM. We need more stations doing this in other markets.

To much sports and Rush is killing the AM band.

Bella Luna's angle is that the owner gets to do his own show one night, and I'll bet most of the ads are for trade. Same with NCH Bakery. How many have had rate increases of any significance?

There is no such station as WDJO. Look it up. The time it's taking to get this deal done makes me wonder if there will be.

True, elephant. The 1480 calls are still WCIN, and they are still playing those station ID jingles that sound poorly edited.

Back to Bobonthejob's comments about the "long term" advertisers, besides Bella Luna and NCH Bakery being mostly trade, the Ford ads are from the Nolans, who are owners. Ditto the Harley ads.

I give them credit for what they have been able to do for the last three years, but please don't mistake that for the idea that "Oldies Work" in a big picture sense. Agencies won't buy them. Period. Mom and Pops can't spend the money to keep them afloat without the owners kicking in. I would bet the ranch no one has seen a monetary return on their investment. If someone is considering buying an AM based on 1160/1480's success, look closer.

Not sure what the issue with getting the calls are, unless someone beat the Cincy operation to them. For that matter, they can be "WDJO" as long as they say "WCIN" at the top of the hour.

They seem to be doing a great job executing the format. The station may be a labor of love but at the same time they seem to be treating it as a business.
So, if any radio station can make a few bucks with this format, they certainly can.

Yes, its a mistake to go further then the very early seventies on AM radio. For instance, I don't think they would survive if they played all seventies music all the time.

I wouldn't venture further into the late 70s either if I were in management...WDJO has built a following for 50s/60s audiences....Doobie Bros.,James Taylor, Eagles are okay with me. Alice Cooper,Led Zep,KISS,Donna Summer, disco, late 70s A/C on the other hand a big fat NO!!!

Spot on. If it doesn't excite the buyer, then they don't buy it. They (agency) are there to do the best job for the client and it isn't happening.
Advertisers need a stable format with a captive audience. Then they need to OWN that audience. You can do that with a WDJO.
The old thought that the 60 year old crowd doesn't buy anything is crap.
Then there is the old agency mantra of "justify, justify, justify".
Go get a fresh copy of "The Wizard of Ads" and the rest of the trilogy. Its required reading at my company. Every one of the kids working at the agencies should be reading it as well.

The advertisers direct the agency to buy stations that fit the age group they are targeting with that product. You need to convince P&G that they need to develop products to market to 55+.

In most cases the Agency dictates to the Client what they should do. The Agency makes "recommendations" to their Client.
Oh, don't buy that format, their audience doesn't have any money...... Everyone knows that older demo's hang on to their cash.
No, we just may not spend as much on ourselves. We are buying for our kids, grand kids, etc.
Now that mine are grown and i have a grand child, i have noticed that the spending is up. Its true for our friends that have grand kids.
The same holds true for my folks and my in laws.
So, that is the new target. The active grand parent that blows the wad on the children's children.

Please, debate all you like about this, we'll make more...but, um, back to the original poting...I've been flogging the hits (and stiffs) on Oldies 1160/1480 since 2006...and there's been 70s tunes in the format since they signed on. So what's the big deal?

And THANK YOU for the stiffs...they, along with the legendary talent, are what sets WDJO apart.

Love you, love your show, Cary-- but here's the big deal: even 1480 has you stuck in the lousiest time slot on radio, and do you have any sponsors?  I am really glad that shows like yours still exist, but are you making any money for the station?  Or even for yourself, for that matter?  We all know that nobody's getting rich over there, least of all the jocks.

The point of this thread morphed into a discussion about how agencies won't buy this demographic, and unfortunately your station is living proof.

Great sounding station! Was listening on the live stream. Keep up the good work. By the way.. Cary Pall....did you attend Grahm Junior College in Boston in the early 70's"?

Mr. MoneyMaker or is this Jeff Z, Nobody is rich down in Drydrip KY either. You canned the Music Depressor lack of sponorship and talent. Your wife cheated on you and got the sales dept in the divorce. You work little Katie like a rented mule...and so on... and so forth... ::)

Time slot? You've got to be kidding right? There are tons of jocks out on the street that would give anything to do weekend all night drive. At least he's in the building.

As for jocks not getting rich that's really nothing new or unusual.

Wish the oldies or standards were back on 1530 instead of the sports dreck.

I must be different. I'm almost sixty and still enjoy Q102 and KISS107. You guys are just so"2000 and late"

moneymaker: Money? HAH!!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!! ROFL!!!!!!! I make enough for a "2 for 20" at Applebee's with a fair tip each week. I do this show for one reason and one only: I get to play whatever I want. And, believe it or not, I do follow a format...but it's my own. For that privilege, I am thrilled to be on during this or any shift.

BossJock56: Yes, Grahm 71-73. Lived on the greasy burgers and vinegar-thinned ketchup at that greasy spoon for two years.
