OK WPLM has flipped, but to what?

Probably a mostly female demo, but some guys may like the _non_-Delilah stuff. Just remember
this is (female-targeted) Easy 99.1 we're talking about here, not "Sports Talk 99.1" or
"The Classic Rock That Really Rocks 99.1" :)

All this Delilah hate ... I'm not in her target demo either, but I can certainly understand the appeal of her show. I'm assuming that she's at least maintained, if not improved, the nighttime ratings previously garnered by the live local bodies that her affiliates used to employ, so is there really an argument to be made for dumping her?

I know she's not target the demo that a lot of us are in, and I definitely don't listen. The problem is, that the music in her show no longer fits the rest of the station. The newer stuff that is now considered AC (Gwen Stefani, Katy Perry, Nickelback, Daughtry) gets played on Delilah, but not on WPLM during the rest of the day. If they could get a version of the show like Tesh, where stations insert their own music, it might work a bit better.

It's not a sleepy soft AC anymore either. I see plenty of uptempo songs on the playlist. I don't think Delilah's playing Katy Perry or Daughtry is a problem for a station that's already playing Natalie Imbruglia and Creed.

I'm also noticing a few playlist anomalies. WPLM played Neil Young's "Hey Hey, My My" and the Moody Blues' "I'm Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band" this morning. What's so AC or female-skewing about those classic-rock staples?

Why compete not try to go after some of the Top-40 listeners.  If they could carve away 10% of the people who listen to Kiss-108, would it be worth it giving them more listeners than they currently have?

I completely agree! Brand it as the South Shore's Hit Music Channel, lean it Rhythmic to compete with both KISS and JAMN, possibly speed up the music or even pitch it a bit, do commercial free mondays, give it agressive processing, actually put effort into the website, promote it a bit, it really cold work. I'm not saying that could be a big threat to KISS or JAMN but they could chip away at their audience a bit and get respectable ratings in Boston as a South Shore Based Hit Music Station. CHR does great in PPM and there is definately room for even a rimshot in Boston to chip away at Clear Channel's monopoly. Oh who am I kidding haha I really wish they would do that with WPLM-FM though.

So what is the ancient history on WPLM - specifically the AM. Did the AM/FM used to run separate programming (I know the AM runs business during the day now, but thinking of local origination)? Did the AM (or FM) do anything like locally focused programming similar to WATD? Other than the news in the morning WPLM is pretty much are geared to the playlist while WATD is more full service. Just wondering if its always been like that.

My wife won't listen to anything else but classic rock; there are tons of women who love those songs. I think it's a great idea to add classic rock. It's a stations she and I can both listen to and love.

But I think your wife is more of the exception rather than the norm.

Well, the new format seems to be working for them, they jumped half a point in the 6+, which for them is an accomplishment...Unless that's strictly for curiosity listening.

If they REALLY wanted to make more accomplishments, they'd have to dump Delilah and Strictly Sinatra on the weekends.

We are not allowed to disclose numbers here, but I was talking with someone who works for a competing station that has the numbers, and there is one shift at 99.1 that does exceptionally well in the adult demographic, and in reality those are the numbers that count. Unless you are Radio Disney, does any station GARA about the 6+ numbers?

I don't have a problem with the Sinatra stuff on the weekend, it is destination radio, and it is better to have it heard on FM with the benefit of 15K audio and stereo than 3K AM Mono.

I won't rehash my opinion of The Queen of Sap, I am not in the mood to raise my blood pressure, but let's just say she is bad radio IMHO.

I will say the new playlist is interesting, sometimes I go "huh" but overall I can accept it.

People who aren't in radio, especially those in Delilah's target demographic, don't share that opinion, and that's what counts.

I STILL wish they would just go a bit deeper into the music of some of theese artists. I mean, how
many times can they play "The long run" by the Eagles? Or Handyman by James Taylor.
I do have a question; Are the jocks in Plymouth or up in Boston?? ( Weren`t They at the Greater media building
at one time?)

AFAIK they have always been in Plymouth, and I know for a fact they are live from Plymouth now. They are staffed 24/7 or at least they were when I was offered a job there at this time last year.
