Oldies On The Internet

Oh man, "don't say You don't remember" another of my late 60's /early 70's all time favorites...plus Bobbi Martin "For The Love Of Him", Lulu - "Oh me, Oh my, I'm a Fool For you baby", Pickettywitch - "That Same Old Feeling" and Evonne Elliman "I don't How To Love Him" (also Helen Reddy, If i remember correctly)from Jesus Christ Superstar. Polly Brown lead singer for Pickettywitch sounded just like Dionne Warwick.

I just heard Lulu-Oh Me Oh My recently for the first time in my life (on internet radio of course) and LOVED it!

I don't believe I ever heard the Bobbi Martin or Pickettywitch. Since we have similar tastes Im going to try to find them.

I forgot to add The First lady Of Soul "Aretha Franklin' did a sweet version of "Oh Me Oh My (I'm a fool For You baby)" see attached you Tube Link ....you can beat you eggs and you can beat your opponents , but you can't beat ARETHA..http://youtu.be/NNYqoAgDNnw

"For the Love of Him" by Bobbi Martin made #13 on the Hot 100 in 1970, and #1 AC I think....I love the song, but you likely won't hear it much on radio anymore....they'd slap the "sappy" tag on it, not to mention that the feminists might have an issue with it!

I just found the clip of it. I never heard it before. You better believe feminists (and women in general) would have a HUGE problem with the lyrics.

Yet they have no problem with songs like "Love The Way You Lie" or most hip hop. Treating women bad in a song is acceptable depending on how it's presented. But worshiping a man like a king is absolutely taboo.

I just cannot get into today's music. At all.

Even the "classic hits" stations are adding 80s (understandable, as they have to hit the target demo) and dropping all 50s and most 60s songs....I'm pretty much stuck on Internet radio or our HD2's here.

C'est la vie.

THANKS !! for mentioning Pickettywitch..although I try my best to have ALL the stuff I played on the air back in the day..sometime i just overlook a few..as soon as i heard this..it was like i just played it..now in rotation on the ROCK BOX...

Let's see here.... "Single Girl", "Born a Woman", and just about anything else by Sandy Posey wouldn't make the PC cut. Neither would Jack Jones "Wives and Lovers". Then there's Dean Martin's "Too Many Chiefs", which manages to offend two groups....women and native Americans. Don't even THINK about Arthur Godfrey's "Too Fat Polka", 1910 Fruitgum Company's "Indian Giver", Gene Pitney's "Mecca", Ray Stevens' "Ahab the Arab", or Pat Boone and Mel Blanc teaming up for "Speedy Gonzales". What about Bobby Goldsboro's "Me Japanese Boy"?

All hits in their day....too hot to handle now.

And by the way, I've always wondered if a bouncer ever came along and dealt with Beverly Bremers for writing on the corner of a table. ;D

Talk about a song that was Taboo back then.... "Charlene -"Never Been To Me"

Hey lady, you, lady, cursin' at your life
You're a discontented mother
and a regimented wife
I've no doubt you dream
about the things you never do
But I wish someone had a talk to me
like I wanna talk to you

..........not to mention the strong Abortion theme thru-out the song......

How about, "ONE HAS MY NAME" by Barry Young. Barry sounds like he has Dean Martin's voice. If you don't remember this song from 1966, look up the video on You Tube.

He sounds just like Dean , quite amazing actually......

This also happened alot with the New Orleans artists, it was hard to distinguish between those artists, alot of times, they all had that same woozy style and alot of times most all of these artists were produced by the genius Dave Bartholomew (not sure of the spelling) and recorded at Matissimo's studio...the Neville brothers, were the most unique sounding of that geographical area.

Somebody mentioned the Charlene song on a different thread. All the guys (except for myself) hated it and considered it one of the worst songs of all time.

The song actually ran into trouble with feminists in 1976 after it was recorded and it never got much airplay. Scott Shannon re-discovered it in the early 80s when he was in Tampa and turned it into a hit.

I like Charlene's feminine energy in the song, I have a soft spot for sappy songs with female vocals. I don't care for hardened female vocalists like Pink, although I admit some of her songs are catchy.

My brother and I were listening to "I've never been to me" last night and he corrected me about the lyric content, I thought there was an abortion theme going on there, and he said he had read a while back ,that she was lamenting never having children....he told me the song was originally written for a man, and changed when it was presented to Charlene.

Sometimes I've been to crying for unborn children
that might have made me complete
but I, I took the sweet life
I never knew I'd be bitter from the sweet
I spent my life exploring
the subtle whoring
that costs too much to be free
hey lady I've been to paradise
but I've never been to me..

I could see why feminists could've been bugged by this, but I always thought that the song was simply more DUMB than anything else (and pompous).

As for Barry Young... I have "One Has My Name on My Ipod. Personally, I don't see where the lyrics are all that offensive (but there's a video on Youtube that some might find objectionable). I also don't think the guy's voice actually sounds all that much like Dean Martin. Perhaps a little, maybe.

I'll admit that I thought it was a Dean Martin record when it came out. But if you listen to it carefully, it's not so much the guy's voice as his delivery, singing style, and most importantly the mid-60s "Martin-esque" arrangement.

I never did think the Charlene song had anything to do with abortion. But I can understand how the "unborn children" lyric could lead to that conclusion. It was my gut reaction until I understood the song better.
