oldies survey

In 1978, there were no formats revolving around 20 year old songs.

What? "Oldies" was born at WCBS-FM about 1973 - featuring songs that were 20 years old.

I believe WCBS was playing songs that were 10 and 15 years old, but likeely not 20 in 1973. And it was a very rare station, not a nationwide "format".

Moose and jmobook - I never said BM formatics were in use at Oldies 93 - my original comment was the BM formatics applied to a "LOT OF FORMATS TODAY" - long music sweeps, quick positioning liners, limited commercials - sounds like of lot of stations (which, IMOH, is part of the problem with the biz).

The connection I originally made between BM and Oldies was the aging demographics and how as that formats audience aged (and died) there were very few new listeners coming in on the young side to replace them. That is happening to a great extent to Oldies, however, there is a lot more money in the older demos today than in the 80s when BM died.

A well done, personality oriented oldies station (like the fomer Oldies 93) can still make a lot of money!!! And isn't that what it is all about?

Of the various 2000-format flip varieties of 100.7, IMO the station sounded the best during the Dave Solomon era. He was a great jock for that station. And only with Charlie Van Dyke... I still think he's a great VO for that format.

I like CVD... but not at $900 per 4 pages. That's what he was asking in 2000. We had him at $750. He wanted a raise...so we went with Chuck Riley for a very manageable $400 per month.

I recently got to produce Charlie again for WOMC/Detroit. Was a lot of fun.

Jeff Laurence gives you the big voice, but is also more flexible on many reads compared to the two above. Especially with the proper writing. Jeff is my fav.

Solomon was great! I still talk to Dave today. He owns and runs successful internet stations as well as a marketing and VO business.

I believe WCBS was playing 50s tunes. 15 years old would be 1958. I'm pretty sure they went back to 1955 which would be 18 years old. But now we're just splitting hairs.

"Oldies" started with WCBS had grew from there. Many stations were playing mid-late 50s in the mid 70s. "Happy Days", debuted 1974, helped the format pick up steam nationwide.

Later, when "oldies" hit it's stride in the early 90s the mid 50s were still being played, and those stations did quite well. I played 50s titles at WMJI in 1999. Even had a "Fab 50s Weekend", later re-branded as "The Roots of Rock n Roll" as CC didn't want "oldies" used on air.

in one way or another....they're All Oldies.
if you're 12 years old, last week is Oldies.
if you're 20...last year is.
and so it goes.

Side note to Kris Abrams. I have an aircheck, on www.reelradio.com, of you calling in to the 1997 (Oct) WMJI/WIXY Reunion Weekend when Jack Armstrong was doing a Sat night show. Great stuff!

Chuck, Jack woke me up off the couch with that call. He was a helluva talent - and became a good friend after we got our from under the 'morning guy/PD' pressure cooker (grin). He introduced me to a lot of a radio world that I had no business being a part of. He asked me to go with him to the inductions for the radio wing at the Rock Hall - have to say, being around the legends of the business was one amazing weekend I will never forget.

You are right on Laurence - he rocks. I brought him in to work on the KOOL/Phoenix and he has rocked the house since he day he started.

I lost track of Solomon...what internet stations is he running? Would love to hear them...

If the movie Grease was remade today with Mario Lopez and Jessica Simpson, Oldies would come back. I mean 50's Doo Wop and all. Everly Brothers, and everything. Shana na reunion tour etc. Bank it.

::) Yep, If we had another "Woodstock" we would be OK too!, But it ain't gonna happen..We can remember all we want, but thoses days are gone but not forgotten...insert tear here

Wrong Ape, you are totally WRONG. we see what happened when they did the new woodstock. It was a disaster and it sucked. Not the same thing at all. Some things you have to really think about and not just click the post button, pal!! :-\ :-*

Actually Woodstock '94 was pretty good, musically speaking. IMO the highlight of Woodstock '98 was Kid Rock's performance of "Bawitiba". Rocked!
