Omnia 11- first look

Love ya! Can't wait to hear it for the "first time" next week! :)

Looks like we've got a comic among us. Your comment suggests you heard the box recently. If so, I can tell you it hasn't been out of the lab recently, as we're getting things ready for NAB, and production.

Yes, I will be there all the week. Try the roast beef.

On a more serious note, if someone were to bring program audio off the console, could they audition the box with it?

I got to hear the "sneak peek" at the very early version last year. Can't wait to hear the real thing this year!

Mr Foti, your competitor will sell an hardware kit for upgrading it's actual flagship audio processor. Is it possible that you do the same for the Omnia 6 users ?

Greetings from NAB!!

In answer to the price question, the list price is $12,995.00. USD.

Omnia.11 has been designed to offer additional functions that were not part of broadcasting when Omnia.6 was released in 2001. Considering that HD Radio, and the Arbitron PPM systems were not around at that time. Omnia.11 has functions that further enhance both HD Radio and the PPM system. Since we cannot fold these items into the Omnia.6 platform, it required us to move onto a fresh canvas. Hence there will not be any backwards compatibility with Omnia.6.

We'd like to thank the judges from BE Radio who were kind enough to give Omnia.11 a Pick Hit award. On a side note, they also awarded the new Telos VX phone system with a Pick Hit.

Thanks to all whom came by this week, and hope to catch up with as many as possible in the future.

-Frank Foti

Thank you for your reply Mr Foti.
For those who are not concerned by HD or Arbitron PPM, is it possible that your new Omnia 11 ultra low IMD clipper may include a future Omnia One update (or any other existing Omnia platform) ?

Are you working in our marketing dept? :)

Keep your eyes peeled for some exciting Omnia. One news later this year!!

Thank you! It seems the Omnia.11 is a bit more 'hyped' than the Orban 8600.
There is nothing to be found on it (yet) except the official Orban page

It appears the Optimod 8600 has nothing new except the final clipper. The Omnia 11 appears to have all new technology, density detectors, intelligent limiters, etc. Some have reported the best sounding box at NAB was the new Vorsis. I'm sure more info (hype) will be published soon. ;D

And lots of others said it was Omnia.11, hands down, as the best new box.

Before this thread gets hijacked by goofy comments, please give thought to the following:

There's no way anyone could possibly compare any of the new boxes up against oneanother, as there were no direct A/B comparisons to be had. I question the credibility of anyone who will make a comparison claim at this time. Anyone who does, is probably a shill for that product.

The ear cannot decipher loudness/quality variations of one signal against another, unless the comparison is made within milliseconds of listening to one against the other. Considering each of the noted products were located many minutes away from each other...AND..the convention hall was filled with plenty of ambient noise, any mentioned comparisons made based upon a few days at NAB is a huge stretch.

Frank, thank you for setting this thread straight.

I agree with Frank. It goes back to the days of groups of people all listening to lists of words to verify intelligibility in reverberant spaces. RASTI with TEF did away with that process. Double blind tests in controlled environments over multiple sessions are still necessary to evaluate processor sound due to the subjectivity of the "perceived quality" of the results.

I listened to it at NAB. First off, it's VERY transparent-as Corny correctly said it: "peels a few layers off the onion".

That can be a mixed bag though-if the rest of your chain is not pristine, you WILL hear its distortions and limitations. As an example, I preferred the bass of the Omnia 6 on the first song I heard; it seemed 'rounder' and not as distorted. THEN I realized that the 11 was accurately sending on the crappy bass sound of the mix on the CD! This might cause problems in stations that use perceptually coded music in their automation systems.

For several reasons I didn't listen to the Optimod 8600. I did listen to the Vorsis and liked it very much. For some things it might even be better then the Onmia-but as a 'one size fits all' the Omnia is the winner.

Overall, I think that Omnia has a winner...but then again I always make sure my air chains are of the absolute best quality (and stringing a bunch of equipment together doesn't always do this-things are additive and subtractive between certain gear).

By the way, I also run Breakaway on my streams and agree that for it's price it's a VERY capable processor-in some ways better then multi thousand processors from just a few years ago.
