Pete Sheppard - Out at WEEI

TravisWMLN said:
My conspiracy theory: Pete was the only one dropped from the station last week...not a budget cut but a termination for another reason...usually with budget cuts you wipe out a few people.
The more I think about this, the more I agree. How much money was he making? They have to pay the fill-ins something, don't they? Why was Meter spared? They must have had something of a windfall from all of those unscheduled and unbudgeted political ads.........why now?

There must be more to this than meets the eye, but it looks like neither side is talking. It seem to me that Pete would have a right to be a little bitter, when he looks at some of the people that still have jobs, particularly on weekends. I guess that he's not burning any bridges, which is smart.

Not offering anything inside baseball here, just some educated supposition...

1. Sheppard was a FT employee which means benefits and other fringe costs as opposed to other co-hosts such as Fred, Steve, etc. that are PT and are paid at an hourly rate w/no benefits. Whereas flashes can be replaced at no cost by Metro, someone needs to appear on Glenn's show with him, hence the guests. Meter would be a viable comparison, but his contract may not have the same type of out.

2. If Schilling's agreement expired and he was paid "stupid money" (his words) to host his blog last year, it stands to reason that Entercom would not renew the deal if weei.com is now on the map and the 38pitches blog is not attracting commensurate page views. My guess is Schill's "boycott" has little to do with Pete because the sunset of his agreement also means fewer scheduled on-air appearances. Plus, Schilling is now talking about getting back into game shape so he may be occupied anyway.

Yesterday, on the Big Show, Ordway and guests were discussing the infusion of advertising revenues brought about by the senate race. They said that despite charging the lowest rates for those ads it was a bonanza for local media outlets. This makes me wonder more and more about Sheppard's dismissal for budget reasons. I wonder if we'll ever get the real story.

I doubt it.

WEEI saw that the Brown/Moakley tap was turned off and moved to cut costs. I have noticed in the last week that WEEI was running national ads w/ Mike & Mike pimping some product during WEEI produced content. Seems like they are having trouble filling the gap the end of the political ads caused.

Do stations give non-profits free air time for commercial?
I ask b/c I'm amazed at the number of times I hear the 1 800 Kars 4 Kids ads on both sports stations. I can't imagine Kars4Kids has that much money to slinging so much airtime.
I was wondering if the stations use those type of spots as fillers when they haven't booked regular advertising.

I don't think Kars 4 Kidz is a non-profit. Check the web and I think you'll find just the opposite. I do, for some reason, like the whole "k" thing though. ::)

K4K is a 501(c)(3) non-profit. It says so in the spot that runs on your very station.

Shows how badly I listen. I guess I can't get past the singing in the commercial. After more reading, it seems that K4K sends kids to camp in upstate New York to learn about judaism.

501 3 C status means you can deduct the contribution, actual cash value, yada yada yada.

It means for the company they don't distribute and dividends or show a profit, that does not mean they are not paying themselves a hefty salary or buying a boatload of spots on a bunch of stations ( hello Citizens Energy!)

As for K4K within the first millisecond I hear that horrid jingle, I change the station.

The programming is what is put on the air between commercials with the hope it will keep the listeners there until the next spot. What happens when the spots are so bad they send listeners to other stations, or in my case over to satellite radio, and it will be a while before they migrate back to listen more.

What happens when spots are so offensive to the ears that listeners flee? It can't be good for cume!

Can we go back talking about Pete Sheppard ???

Sounds like Pete is still on good terms with all of the Big Show guys. They were talking about the dinner they all had together the other day. They are still allowing "bring back Pete" remarks on the whiner line. When other people left their names were never spoken again. Has John Wallach even been mentioned on WEEI in the past 6 months? Curioser and curioser.

{ Has John Wallach even been mentioned on WEEI in the past 6 months? }

I heard a reference to John Wallach one time during the Whiner Line. Not sure about any other times, but you are correct....they still freely talk about Pete more so than I thought they would.

I believe its a stunt ( and a very bad one ) . WEEI did mentioned Ted Nation when he got kick off the air but he still do B.C. Basketball games for WEEI.

Just heard Pete Sheppard doing a spot on WEEI. It was one of those ads where one of the station's sponsors (in this case Owater) touts the successes of advertising on WEEI, followed by an 'EEI personality providing information on how a company can advertise on WEEI. In this case, it was Pete Sheppard.

Yeah, maybe we are a couple of weeks removed from Pete being let go, but I still think he's going to return.

I'm curious to see what became of David Field's visit today.... (CEO of Entercom)
savewrko.com was speculating Julie Kahn could be out....KAHNNNNNNN KAHNNNNNNNNN
