That was the plan for a long time, to move WMFN 640, a station 30 kHz from a Chicago local station, as close to WMAQ/WSCR 670 as possible. The 25 mV/m contours of each station can't overlap each other. Took some fancy legal and engineering footwork, but it finally happened. It's licensed to Peotone, IL. They were able to move it because there was another station in Zeeland, WJQK 99.3.
 
Birach Broadcasting has also done the 30 kHz to a local signal approach with WNWI 1080 Oak Lawn, IL (30 kHz from the former WMBI 1110), WCXI 1160 Fenton, MI (30 kHz from WDFN 1130), and WTOR Youngstown, NY (30 kHz from CFZM 740 Toronto, ON), and probably others, including WNDZ 750 Portage, IN (30 kHz from WBBM 780).
 
On Monday 12/13 at 2 pm, I was stuck at a railroad crossing on the Westside of Indianapolis and decided to see what I could pick up on my Honda Accird with the stock radio.

On 600, a very weak but listenable WMT from Cedar Rapids IA with Clay & Buck as well as weather.
 
Last Night, between 5:00 and 5:30 PM, I heard WIBD 1470 West Bend, WI on the FIM-41 near Pellston, MI. This is the best time to hear WIBD (formerly WBKV) here, in between WFNT reducing power and changing patterns, and WMBD changing patterns and going North better 15 to 30 minutes after WFNT changes.

1030 KBUF KS Holcomb 12/13/2021 1720 Conservative talk, local ad for farm equipment in Garden City, poor // stream

1540 KXEL IA Waterloo 12/13/2021 1655 Fox Wheels report, Cedar Falls ad with 319 AC, buried deep under KEDA // stream.

1540 is a very noisy frequency here. KGBC during the day, mixing with KEDA at night, but there is a low droning noise most of the time, especially at night.

The simple answer is so WMFN could potentially attract more advertising revenue by relocating to a much larger market. Accomplishing that goal is made easier by rhe fact that the signal us bigger because ground concutivity is better in the Chicago area than it is around Zeeland, Resulting in a bigger signal.

That was the point I was trying to make when I said they wanted the Chicago market. You stated it better than I did :)
 
There was an FM tropo opening today from the Edinburgh IN Global Tuners receiver, which got WZZK 104.7, Birmingham, AL. From here in Knoxville at my DX hill, WGGG, Bowling Green, KY on 95.1, back on after the tornado and making it past my local religious translator.

10pm CST KSKY 660 Dallas is off the air for unknown reason. I’m hearing XEFZ Monterrey and XEDTL DF mixing N/S and a weak KTNN AZ E/W playing country with some Native Am. mixed in. Edit- at 2305 I’m picking up a weak WFAN with sports talk // stream with the XE’s nulled.

Saw this last night but could only hear the Mexicans. Very disappointing...

Lots of RFI at my house, particularly with all the neighbors' Christmas lights, so the noise floor is high here. I've been going to the neighborhood park recently to DX.

I'm running into some of this at my house as well. Annoying but not an impossible situation. I'm not quite ready to cry "bah humbug" just yet.
