Zenith made some good radios.

I have a Zenith table radio from I think the early 60s. It still runs on tubes, and it sounds absolutely wonderful and warm, if a bit fuzzy (probably needs a tuneup), particularity on AM.

It is, as far as I can tell, completely original and untouched inside (all original Zenith branded tubes, too!)

Probably still on day power late...but this is a TREMENDOUS catch from Wisconsin. Well done!!

Anyhow, ended up with a NEW Ms log while on my pizza delivery run tonight. KXDD-104.1 knocked off air after heavy rain and weather conditions. Heard KHKK-104.1 Modesto CA on a meteor burst at 2057 PT with a slam-dunk The Hawk ID and into a song, then fadeout. This was on a very, very sensitive 2018 Buick Encore radio (new car getting financed by a used car dealer). NEW #903, 50KW at 618 miles.

The early 1960s were when radios switched over from tubes to transistors. Our 1961 Oldsmobile had a Delco tube radio. Our 1965 Chevrolet had transistors.Tube radios were usually more sensitive, but were bigger, had larger loops also. Miniaturization resulted in transistors and short ferrite loop. Early transistor radios lacked sensitivity. Introduction of better transistors and TRF stages resulted in better sensitivity by the mid to late 1960s.

Professional guitar amps often are still using tubes, which they call valves. They do have a mellower sound.

What goes wrong with the tube and transistor radios are often the capacitors.

I just realized something interesting. The Zenith Royal 13 pic I posted might be the only radio that didn't have its model # shown on the front. You have to open it up to see it!
It's a great performer too.

I'm getting that radio for Christmas. Two months of waiting to open it.

KMZQ-670 Las Vegas walloped over KBOI earlier tonight in Yakima. Vegas ads and syndicated conservative talk.
Last night it was the 46-watt signal of KWRO-630 Coquille OR, Sean Hannity weekend repeat, Coos Bay ads, good signal at times. I doubt it was 46 watts.

Location: DFW, Texas -- Receiver: Sangean ATS-909X using internal antenna.

Well my perpetual neighborhood RFI has finally abated, yielding a dial full of stations again! Fingers crossed it stays gone. With my local KAAM-770 silent, I checked out new opportunities on this channel. At 3:30 AM CDT today (10/28), I heard KKOB Albuquerque (relog) with a rather weak signal broadcasting conservative talk. Rotating the radio, I heard CHQR Calgary, AB with "Origins of New Music" program, consisting songs followed by a commentary/discussion of each. The slight Canadian accent led me to check the CHQR web stream, which matched. CHQR was fair to good at times, but would fade out completely for several minutes. I tried to log WABC, and might have heard snippets of top of hour news and Lionel talk, but too weak to confirm at this time.

You might be able to get KATL Miles City, MT on 770 as well. Or the late Brother Stair on WEW St. Louis at sunset. Calgary is a great catch from Dallas.

10/28 6:14 PM CDT 1550 KC WKTF Vienna, GA variety format. Not sure of their power. It's listed as 10kw day, 23 watts nighttime.
It's dark here, so I dunno. They're coming in good for 23 watts, if that's what they're running. They only have one tower. So non directional.

“Mike in Destin, 10/25 12:00 AM 790KC WNIS Norfolk,VA talk 5kw. One source (Wiki) says 3 towers, Radio Locator says 4 towers. Zenith Royal 13 from 1969.”

fccdata.org and fccinfo.com also has 4 towers “U3” directional: same pattern 24/7 …must be wiki typo.

radio-locator.com has been way behind on updating facilities changes, plus paywall comes up after maybe 10 searches. I’m a hobbyist, no reason to pay for station data!

Thank you!

10/30 6:25 PM CDT 1540 KC KXEL Waterloo,IA Fox News. They were coming in really well, then completely lost them. They must have changed to their nighttime pattern with two towers. They must protect a station in Nassau, Bahamas. They beam north at night.

7:00 PM 1220 KC WSLM Salem,IN news/sports/country 82 watts nighttime
Two towers.

Also heard very weak unknown station playing the Supremes "Come see about me" on 1220 KC.

The KXEL DA goes way back. The null to the SE definitely protects the Bahamas. Not sure if the SW null had a purpose at the time for anything else than concentrating the power to the East and West over the US, with just two towers, in a configuration that also concentrates the RMS field to the East and West.

From FCCinfo.com.

Thanks for that info! It's amazing they're able to create those nulls with just two towers.

KKDA-AM 730 kHz - Grand Prairie, TX playing Korean talk.

There was another station playing "Wonderful Tonight" by Eric Clapton before KKDA came in, but I don't know what it was.

WSLM, very possibly not running 82 watts.

From Houston TX

Out with the dog early this morning, heard a new one at 0710 CDT, XEANT 770 Tancanhuitz de los Santos w/announcement in Spanish and traditional acoustic folk music //stream. Fair/good signal at times mixing with KKOB and XEACH Monterrey.

This makes 500 stations logged from Houston!
