Predictions For 93.1 and 93.9

Miami is one of the very, very few markets in which liberal talk radio has succeeded. Neil is the primary example of that. Would Cox dare try a local liberal or two?

Maybe years ago liberal talk worked, but not today. Neil was great in his time. But WINZ dumped "progressive" talk to become the 4th Sports talk station in the market last year! (5th if you want to count what 1400 was doing at the time.)

It would be GREAT to put on live, local talk, so you could do local issues and tweak the slant as you see fit, but that's not what ANYONE does today.

In PPM, Neil went out with less than a 1 share. It's been a long time since he had big, big numbers. WINZ did terribly in the diary, and one would assume from the low diary cume it had that such a format wold likely do worse in PPM.

Miami is not an extremist right/Tea Party kind of town so an FM Talker with the likes of Hannity and Limbaugh will likely remain up in limbow.

Cox would not be able to secure Limbaugh and Hannity, anyway, due to the fact both are already on Clear Channel's WIOD. As for Cox's syndicated Boortz and Howard, Boortz is a Libertarian and not an extreme right winged "Tea Party" supporter, while Howard is not political at all as his show revolves around financial matters. A local/live morning and afternoon drive talk program will set the stage, provided it caters to Miami and South Florida.

As a libertarian I must ask you not to refer to Boortz as one, he's a right winger

People didn't listen to Neil for politics, they listened to him because he was funny.

I think if they are going to put a talk station on 93 they should mix it up, a little lib a little con and Alex Jones to create controversy and bring attention to the station.

Don't forget that Randi Rhodes was very successful at WJNO, and she was largely surrounded by conservatives during every other daypart.

FM Talk doesn't work in every market. Cox had FM Talk(Rightwing) in San Antonio, the line up included- Mancow, Neal Boortz, Laura Ingraham, Michael Savage, Clark Howard and Phil Hendrie. Needless to say, the format was on the air for less than a year.

I just returned to south Florida last night, and noticed both 93.1 & 93.9 doing Christmas music.

I'm just curious though....I seem to feel the same way as Mr. Eduardo....was 93.9 really tanking? (not that I cared to listen to them much)

I'd love to have a talker on FM here, but I'd certainly wonder which hosts they'd be able to bag (if on 93.1).

I am also a Libertarian.

WMIA was pulling in a 3.9 in the last PPM. And they were 6th in the market for cume. That's not too shabby. Not sure of their 25-54 numbers, but I would suspect it's pretty good. So, no, they are not "tanking," but it would be just like Clear Channel to mess up a good thing. I'm sure the station will come back close to their current format on December 26th. Remember, not every station blows up after being all Christmas. Sometimes, they just go "all holiday" because they can.

At least play Rhythmic AC type holiday music instead of the standards. I thought PD's hate to break formats? I'm sure 93.9 MIA will be back with a refreshed playlist.

As for WHDR, I hope to hear 93.1 Party again on the main FM, and even be able to stream it online again. The biggest clue would be if they change their call letters back to WPYM. For now, I'm reading that it might be going News/Talk.

Most PD's do hate to break format. Of course, that assumes the PD had any control over the decision at all. I've worked for one company where that definitely wasn't the case. I tend to agree, though, that MIA will be back after Christmas.

Killing Miami's only rocker? Who's smoking crack at Cox?

G

Actually Miami still has classic rocker WBGG-FM 105.9. As for "blowing up" WHDR, if the numbers and ad revenues are not there to sustain keeping the format on the 100kw signal, another format will be implemented. Although another music format may very well end up on 93.1, Miami and South Florida is prime for a news-talk outlet on the FM band. Interestingly Cox does not own an existing news-talk AM in the market after selling WIOD years ago to Clear Channel, so if news-talk is the route Cox takes with WHDR, obviously it will be a newly created and programmed format unlike the successful simulcast operations Cox has with the format in Jacksonville and Atlanta as well as other markets.

Any chance that 93.1 could go "hot talk"?

Personally I'd like to see a WDUV- or even (gasp) a WAVV-style format here, but I'm not betting the mortgage on it.

cd

While a WDUV-style station would work in Miami and Broward, that market is cornered by Lite and Magic.

In terms of Hot Talk, it has worked well in Orlando. But Miami and Broward are not Orlando. Moreover, Cox does not seem to have much experience with that format...

After looking at the websites for both stations, I think 93.1 will flip while 93.9 will remain pretty much the same. On 93 Rock they've removed the jocks names, while on 93.9 they are still showing jocks names/profiles on the site. So, I think 93.9 will tweak things a bit...still remaining some type of music station targeting Hispanics. But remaining music.

As for 93.1, I will have to agree with the opinion that it will flip to an FM Talk format.

But Neil Boortz, Hannity, Clark Howard? On the FM? No way. I am sure the powers at Cox are aware of Clear Channel's failures with 940 AM and 610...with all the Air America styled talk. I know Joyce Kaufman is still holding on to that style...but I think its been proven time and again, it doesn't work in South Florida.

I see 93.1 going the way of Clear Channel's WZZR 94.3. More edgy, modern. Younger target. More entertainment oriented. More Paul & Young Ron/Love Doctors styled talk. Leave Clark Howard and that styled talk over on 850. Too stoogy, old, out of style.

And did someone mention Neil or Jorge Rodriquez? I don't see that happening either. I see more local oriented talk developed, not a recycling of things that didn't work, and definitely no syndicated talkers like Hannity.

deolost14, the hot talk format failed with the creation ofr CBS's Free FM and Clear Channel's Real Radio.

The format has been tried and tried. Paul and Young Ron and the Love Doctors are in the twilight of their careers and I don't see either radio team getting a great contract.

Mainstream talk or the re-launch of "Party" in the PPM era is my guess.

Deolost14, I have to disagree about Joyce Kaufman. She never was a liberal, nor does her style seem similar to that of the late Air America. She is one of the fiercest conservatives in the talk radio nationwide. While Air America did not succeed in South Florida, there have been many successful LOCAL liberal hosts here. Neil might represent the past to many of the posters here, but he is the most successful host in the history of South Florida radio. Neil is also a liberal. Randi Rhodes was highly successful as a local host on WJNO in West Palm Beach. And Jorge Rodriguez has been successful in his own right.

If 93 Rock were to go mainstream talk, I would be highly excited to see Neil return - especially on FM. Unfortunately, this will not happen. He is still under contract with Beasley, and Cox would not be willing to shell out the money that Neil would demand.

Neil...It would be too good to be true. But stranger things have happened. He made IOD lotsa money, and big ratings. Cox take note.

As far as MIA decent numbers 25-54. No changes there. But stranger things have happened.

Wish for 2011. Live and local Y-100. Not gonna happen, ratings are good. So the Y control room sits in the dark with the console buttons giving a soft glow :(
