Probable E-skip, up here in Ottawa!

During my lunch run, I did a quick poke around the FM band of my car radio (factory '03 Taurus). The first unusual signal, was receiving 'beautiful music' on 90.9, mixing in with a religious program. I first I thought it may be someone streaming an LP wireless feed, but there's no way anyone in Ottawa would be using this frequency, as it lies right next to the powerful CBOF signal.

As I went further down the dial, I bagged something called 'The Joy FM', over riding Perth Ontario's CHLK on 88.1, playing Christian contemporary. A quick check here at work, produced a pleasant surprise, as 'The Joy FM' appears to be WJIS Sarasota FL. Which brings me back to the 'beautiful music' on 90.9. Who else but Jacksonville Florida's WKTZ plays the real old school beautiful music format anymore?

Also picked up the 'Truth for Life' program, wrapping up just before noon (my EDT local time) on 91.1. Any ideas as to where that may have been from? There is a station list & schedule, but I'm not too certain how up to date that list is.

Happy hunting!

KAHM, but you probably wouldn't be picking it up out there, especially on that frequency....

That list and your catches point to WKES in St. Petersburg/Tampa, but their own website shows the Truth for Life show airing at 10:30 am Eastern not 11:30 as the Truth for Life site suggests. Hmm. There's another religious broadcaster on 91.1 in Tallahassee, but they are CSN and carry TfL from 11-11:30am. Alabama has two American Family Radio stations on 91.1 that carry the show, but only on Sundays. That's a tough one.

I caught a snippet of a Fido phone commercial yesterday evening on 87.7, so your observations really make me think I may have heard Canadian TV audio the other day!

More interesting conditions today. This time, from home with the FM-6 pointed WSW, my usual CBOX 'Espace Musique' programming was being whipped off the dial by Billy Graham's 'The Hour of Decision'. The only station which I can find running that program, on 102.5, during my local 9-9:30 time frame, is KKCV Dodge City/Great Bend Kansas. Are the 'E maps' indicating that conditions are right for such a possibility? As of noon, it's Buffalo's Star FM occupying the frequency. Lots of other stuff out there, but I just don't have the time to track them down.

Happy hunting!

Tincap, there was quite a bit of Es to KS/NE/OK this morning in your area. Got to the top of dial in many areas, so your KKCV probably fits.

At 10AM I came across an ES opening when I was scanning the band. Caught the top hour ID of 98.1 KSKZ Copeland, KS (Dodge City/Garden City area). Had a station on 97.3 with ABC news, possibly KKJQ Garden City, KS. Also had a rock station on 93.9 which I couldn't get a solid ID from. I'm guessing its KZRD but I posted a unid clip over at WTFDA to see if anybody recognizes it.

http://forums.wtfda.org/showthread.php?7220-Unid-93-9-Possibly-KZRD

I listened to it with headphones on and it sounded like he said "93.9 the Buzzard" which IS KZRD. Good catch! I didn't notice any E-skip coming in here in Ohio.

Wow,...still going on right now (as of 8pm EDT)! I've just come in from the backyard, with the G8.

IDed on 88.9 - KGLV (K-Love) Manhatten/Topeka Kansas. Also, 'From The Top' (WEKU Richmond KY fits the schedule)

IDed on 89.3 - KZUM Lincoln Nebraska. Also need to know who's running 'A Prairie Home Companion' and the 'TED Radio Hour' (between my 7pm - 8pm EDT local).

OK, I'm going out to try and catch some more.

Happy hunting!

Scanned the FM band from here in Vermilion, OH and getting all kinds of stations in ND - Fargo/Minot/Bismarck/Red River Valley, etc. I have videos I did using the Tecsun PL-390 which I will upload to Youtube and post here soon as I can.

A couple more (before the mosquitoes got to me)

IDed on 89.7 KIWR 'The River' Omaha Nebraska.

IDed on 91.3 KDFR Des Moines IA.

Also, back on 89.3, possible KCMP 'The Current' Northfield MN. Alternative music, but not your 'typical' commercial alternative music.

Happy hunting!

Interesting conditions this morning. I have the FM-6 pointed towards Toronto, but I'm not getting my usual Jazz91 (CJRT 91.1). However, I am getting Rochester's WXXI 91.5 (for the first time)...which being closer than Toronto to me, shouldn't be a big deal, but it's coming on top of my semi-local monster, CBO.

You're getting a bit of Tropo scatter. How far is it to Rochester from your place?

I had something similar a few years ago. I was listening to local 94.1 WOTT when a CBC sounding station began cutting in and out. It was in early spring so I didn't think it was ES. I verified it as a CBC Radio 2 station by checking semi local 92.9 in Kingston. My guess is it was CBL from Toronto as I noticed other stations like 102.1 The Edge, Virgin Radio 99.9 coming in. These other Toronto stations are common by tropo here, but I have never had anything besides strong ES override WOTT since they have been on air.

I'm not much of an FM DXer, but I got a little taste of it this morning.  I normally have streaming audio or my own library streaming from my desktop PC over 88.5 via my Whole House transmitter. So when I hopped in my car to run a few errands, instead of 88.5 being completely blank, as usual, I was getting a religious broadcast. Pretty steady signal  Turned out to be WBNH, Pekin, IL (Peoria area), 127 miles away.  Off the top of my head, I'm going to guess that this is a roughly comparable distance....perhaps not quite as far....as Tincap is from Rochester, NY.

Also tropo scatter?

Little bit of low tropo conditions in your area I guess.

Not unusual around here for summer, but usually happens a little earlier in the season, which is why I was wondering.

When we go to the gulf coast in the summer (which we're not doing this year), tropo is pretty much a guaranteed daily event. Several New Orleans FMs are regulars....from about 140 miles away. Same goes for Panama City, which is well over 100 miles in the other direction. This year, we went at the beginning of April, and there was none of that.

OK, from my home 50mi/80km south of Ottawa ON, '90.9 The Bridge' KTBG Kansas City MO, is rolling in on my Luxman. Other stuff too, although I'm too busy with opther things to actually sit down and roll through the dial, things are certainly heating up!

~BG

89.7 KWJP Paola KS, 89.7 KANH 'Radio Kansas' Emphoria, 91.5 KANU Lawerence KS...all coming in on my Luxman, while I'm busy doing my chores. Soon as I wrap up, I'm going to take that G8 of mine, along with my headphones, outdoors and see what I can bag.

I wonder why you just try the low FM channels, and not just the higher commercial FM channels? More music and less IDs?

Anyway...logged KSJZ/93.3 Jamestown, ND this morning from the Global Tuners receiver in Cheaspeake Bay, MD. About 1200 miles.

There has been E-skip here in Poughkeepsie, NY off and on since about 10am.... not really strong and quite unstable, but I have noted 4 DTV stations: KNOP-5 NE, KSNB-4 NE (New Log!!), KDLO-3 SD, and WHBF-4 IL. Possible new FM's from MN and NE. Also relogs on KDCR-88.5 IA, and WUAL-89.1 AL. The summer skip season has begun!!
