Probable E-skip, up here in Ottawa!

dx1ng said:
There has been E-skip here in Poughkeepsie, NY off and on since about 10am.... not really strong and quite unstable, but I have noted 4 DTV stations: KNOP-5 NE, KSNB-4 NE (New Log!!), KDLO-3 SD, and WHBF-4 IL. Possible new FM's from MN and NE. Also relogs on KDCR-88.5 IA, and WUAL-89.1 AL. The summer skip season has begun!!

KNOP-2 NE, not 5. Or did you get KHAS 5?

Also, KSNB just signed back on with My Network TV. Used to be on KOLN/KGIN-DT2 before it went to KSNB/4. Of course, KSNB was Fox, and before that, one of the NTV ABC affiliates back in the 1980s.

89.7 KWJP Paola KS, 89.7 KANH 'Radio Kansas' Emphoria, 91.5 KANU Lawerence KS...all coming in on my Luxman, while I'm busy doing my chores. Soon as I wrap up, I'm going to take that G8 of mine, along with my headphones, outdoors and see what I can bag.

I wonder why you just try the low FM channels, and not just the higher commercial FM channels? More music and less IDs?

Anyway...logged KSJZ/93.3 Jamestown, ND this morning from the Global Tuners receiver in Cheaspeake Bay, MD. About 1200 miles.

Hey crainbebo, regarding the low end of the band, it's just happened be where I was when the E-skip started coming in (with KTBG walking all over my semi-local WJNY). And with the Luxman's analogue tuner its a little more time consuming to decipher what frequency I'm actually on. With a sudden swarm of signals suddenly coming in, I stuck around the low end.

Things are pretty quiet, at the moment, on both the Luxman and G8.

I've got family coming over shortly, so that'll be it for any more E-skip opportunities today.

Some fun facts & figures. My distance from transmitter sites (source: fmcsan.org).

90.9 KTBG 1627km/1011mi
91.5 KANU 1736km/1079mi
89.7 KWJP 1759km/1093mi (4 kW)
89.7 KANH 1823km/1138mi (3 kW...!)

Also, in the car earlier this morning, 'Moody Radio' on 91.1, which was possibly (but not positive IDed) WKES Lakeland FL 1973km/1226mi.

All in all not bad catches!

Happy hunting!

Sorry for the typo.... yes it was KNOP DT-2... and I probably had a sub-decode on KHAS DT-5.

I may have heard a little bit of Eskip here in VA....I heard on 92.9 someone saying "Kicks Country 92.9", possibly WIKX in FL, and heard only a guy saying "Arkansas" on 94.1. Probably KKPT Little Rock. This was during mid-afternoon on a car radio.

Gar, I'd advise you also use the 6M maps on DXmaps, and the TVFM Skip Log (just type in tvfm skip log to Google and you should find it) for E-skip predictions. I use the 6M maps as well as the TVFM skip log. I am "Seattle CN97" on the TVFM Skip Log.

Thanks for the heads up!

I spend so much time checking for Es in real time but it's true that openings on the lower TV analog ch 2-6 in mass clusters of clouds can lead to it moving up into the FM band.

I've never had a HDTV E Skip. Even the local stations break up easily with the slightest weather conditions but I'm in an apartment on the 1st floor and I'm limited on how high I can put my antenna.

Looks like I have an opening!

91.1 KCFN Wichita KS, is booming into my Luxman. Also picking it up on the PR-D5, up in my studio, as I type...

Updates shortly.

Just had an opening here as well, heard 94.5 WIBW from Topeka, KS and KHMY 93.1 from Wichita, KS.

EDIT: Also on 93.7 a religious station with the program Catholic Answers. The only 93.7 affiliate is KPIO Pleasanton, KS so it was probably them.

Holy crap-olla! KFWR 95.9 Hutchinson Texas 'The Ranch' . That's gotta be a new record for me.

spunker, we'll have to compare notes! I've also gotten KHMY (MY93.1), plus others.

Gotta run back to the Luxman!

OK, things seem to have settled down a bit, with my usuals returning to my dial.

IDed

91.1 KCFN (AFR) Wichita KS 1947km/1210mi
93.1 KHMY (MY93.1) Pratt KS 2023km/1257mi
95.9 KFWR (The Ranch) Jacksboro TX 2353km/1462mi

Tons of other fleeting signals, which I could not ID, however I did pick up one of the Wisconsin Public Radio stations on 91.9 (the strongest of them being WHDI, Sister Bay WI @ 3.4kw...), as well as an Oklahoma station on 97.1

To clarify my previous post, 95.9 KFWR is in Jacksboro TX, not Hutchinson... 93.1 KHMY Pratt KS, was running ads mentioning Hutchinson and in my excited haste, I typed in the error.

A little bit of E-skip action here. I've just gotten a positive ID on 90.9 KGVB Holiday (Wichita Falls) Texas! 2329 km or 1447 miles, as the crow flies.

~BG

I've Mcgyvered my G8 to the FM-6 and have it pointed east, hoping to expand my reach out that way.

I've just bagged WTOS ('Pure Rock') 105.1 Skowhegan Maine @ 428km/266 miles. This probably in the tropo category, but I'm happy about it, none the less.

~BG

A few other notables from this afternoon (other than Montreal).

101.7 WCVT (Classic Vermont) Stowe VT 233km/148mi (1kW - first time for this one, I receive the much more powerful 107.9 WVPS from the same transmitter site, on a regular basis)
101.7 CKHQ (Aboriginal) Oka QC 151km/94mi (0.027kW flea power!)
101.9 CBMG (CBC R1) Cowansville QC 242km/150mi
102.7 CITE-1 (Rouge FM Estrie) Mt. Orford QC 281km/175mi
103.9 CIME (Cime FM) St. Jerome QC 182km/113mi

Nice to get WCVT for the first time, though my Maine experience was my highlight for today. I'll be aiming for more New England hits and -if luck & conditions are right- the Maritimes.

Happy hunting!

WTOS is a max Class C station (equivalent of 100kW @ 600m)

I'm surprised that I haven't picked this up before, as (distance wise, though in the opposite direction) it's only 100km/60mi further than my regular Toronto catches, all of them with less than 100kW. However, being where it is on the dial, probably doesn't help, as it's right next to my local CFJR 104.9 and a very strong Ottawa signal (105.3 Kiss). Only my G8 can pull this off! :)

Speaking of E Skip, there's something on the DX Sherlock site I didn't notice until now.

There's an option for 'FM DX'.

http://www.dxmaps.com/spots/map.php?Lan=E&Frec=FM&ML=M&Map=NA&DXC=N&HF=N&GL=N

I've always been using the 'ES MUF' map to spot Es clouds.

Anyone use the 'FM DX' page when the FM skip is active? Does it only show Es clouds or does it show actual paths in lines too?

Few DXers use it. During big Es only a few paths show up. You're better off looking at the 6 meter maps and scanning the dial when the "red" gets intense in your area.
