Processing clips

One I have been waiting to share.

Ariane Sequel with 8100 (analog to digital BACK TO ANALOG... gotta love it).

Also a pic of the setup. With the arrival of an Inovonivs Omega and the 8100 and the DSP-X, I am in the process of rewiring the joint and looking for a composite switcher to deal with all three monsters

This has been an interesting thread.

I'd like to be another one to chime in and mention the variables involved here. After living through many years of consolidation, I've come to learn why (former competitor "X") used to "sound so crappy". This after station "X" became part of the cluster I had to care for! Guess what...usually it had little to do with the particular processor in use.

The system surrounding the processor has a lot to do with how a processor will perform. This includes the Console, STL, Transmitter, Antenna -- along any FILTERS that may be on the output TX or on the RCV or TX antenna of the RF STL -- especially if the RF filtering is on both ends of the STL.

A notch filter on your main FM transmission line that is close to your operating frequency gives a pretty "interesting" sound characteristic of its own, I've found!

These factors give each of our broadcast facilities a certain "sound" that can be impossible to get rid of -- no matter what processor is in use. These factors can also rob you of loudness if they are in the "wrong" part of the broadcast chain! Just keep this in mind when judging these sound clips!

Finally i found a place to trade information on soundprocessing.
I just added to the folder the (v1 bypass & hard CHR.m4a) made by bypassing the 8200 unit and then turn on with the hard CHR preset modified by peter van beusekom an airchain consultor now working with the european division at orban.

Enjoy!!!

Well, to me this sounds pretty agressive... If that's what you're looking for, great! ;)

The latest to arrive. As soon as we get everything rewired and cleaned up, and my ears become unclogged after the flu and I trust them again, we'll have some audio samples

Looking forward :) Didn't yet have a chance to hear Omega anywhere, so I'm curios how it sounds and how it stacks up. Maybe you can compare it with your Ariane/8100/705 combo or with something else?

I'm going to listen to a DSPX tomorrow. Never heard one before (except the bad sounding clip here).

If you would have the opportunity to buy a new DSPX for 2700 euro ($3570) or a second hand 8200V3 Signature series for 3000 euro ($3970).

What would you do? It's for home use and I listen mostly to pop (hit radio).

I like the idea of the dspx that it is still under development and I read a lot about it. Many say if you get it right it can sound as good as "the big boy's". But on the other hand. A 8200V3 is one of the big boy's. At least it used to be. But not being developed anymore and getting old.

I would get the DSP-X. It is head and shoulders above the 8200 V3 and can be one of the big boys. It has a sweet top end and is capable of deep bass. You'll need to fiddle with the midrange a little, but the box can emulate that Omnia sound and there are more than enough controls to get any flavor you want out of it. I don't know how much more the DSP-X is being developed... IIRC, V3.0 is pretty much the end of the line, there really isn't much left to do and there is already alot of firepower and user control ;)

The 8200 was passed over in New York. I don't recall many FM stations running them at all in the 90's. Most either stayed with whatever tricked out 80's processing they had (Vigilantes, modified 8100's-XT2, Prisms) or with the early Foti boxes or with the Aphex gear (Compellor, Dominator etc). I believe Z-100 actually ran a Banshee IV for some time (RIP Mr. Somich) with some other gear.

The 8200 was digital processing long before it was a matured tech, in fact, I would consider a recapped 8100 with Card 0 & the right pre-processor an upgrade over the 8200. What Orban should have done was made an all-in-one analog box that did 6 band processing for FM... an upgraded 8100... and incorporated ideas from their stereo emhancer in the analog domain. That is what the 8200 should have been. As a digital box, it was WAY too early, it hung around way too long and I actually think the negative taste the 8200 left in many an engineers ears left the door open for Foti and his boxes and why markets like NYC are dominated by Omnia. My OPINION ONLY. I think Bob did a great job with his FM products before and after the 8200. I just don't think the 8200 is worth it.. then or now. You either loved it or hated it. There was no middle ground with the 8200.

Hi Freddysman,
On my 8200 the hard chr preset seems to be DD 5B-FAST preset.
Do you have the settings for myself to try out?

Thanks,
Paul.

hi all,

i've uploaded a sample from a aphex compellor 320A with a TC electronics dBmax and a Omnia FM with the space and Veris options on it...
the musicstyle is typical for a dutch piratestation ;)

Hi,

Can someone tell me the title of the song used in the omnia 6 vs optimod 8100 clip or perhaps have a copy for me? I would like to run it through my dspx-fm. Thanks in advance.

Come Sail Away by Styx. It would be too big to send in WAV format since it is approx 5 mins, but I will see if I can edit the bridge and upload that as a wav file for you.

I've uploaded several DSPX clips, just to show different faces of this processor... The songs are all the same, just different presets. The first one is a soft and clean preset, the goal was not loudness but quality. The second one is more competitive, but still all-round preset. The third clip uses Mike's (wgliradio) preset that he sent me a while ago. You can hear his "style" is a bit different than mine :) The last preset is my version of balls-to-the wall, Top 40 sound with lots of bass.

Enjoy!

Regards,
Goran Tomas

P.S. The input to the processor and output (recording) for all the clips was the same as well as modulation level and I didn't do any subsequent normalizing.
