Pulse 87 is now seeking financial support to stay alive!

I am done with this pissing contest of people who like and dislike dance music. Let the ratings and revenue speak for itself.

They did, and it warranted (albeit briefly) a bailout by the listeners!

As for the David Guetta record it's already Top 30 nationally on CHR/Pop radio. For a record that world premiered in March, I'd say CHR reaction has been VERY fast. The fact that Z-100 started playing "When Love Takes Over" only 2 months after it was first heard anywhere is huge. Anyone remember how long it took for CHR radio to pick up on "Love Is Gone"? And that wasn't even a big radio hit here.

Here here CHRles! :D (raising a glass!) I can vouch....CHRles is NO hater! :D

Granted, for those of us that are dance music fans, we are passionate. No crime in it. But sometimes that passion could get in the way in terms of looking at what is going on in the background. Sure, I was pushing for everyone to donate what they could to Pulse. But after the dust had cleared, more questions came to my mind than just saying "we did it". That's why on the other board, I had created an open letter to Pulse because while it was good that we showed support, the reality is....WE CANNOT DO THAT EVER AGAIN!

You can't continually ask listeners to pour in money like that. Then what happens when things are collected and Pulse gets in trouble AGAIN. I mean, we are not in this stable economy. We did our share and the station has been "spared" (I cannot say "saved"). I want Pulse to last but a lot of things have to be taken care of internally. And I hope this event serves as a "wake up call" for something to change somehow to get Pulse to stay afloat.

Back to CHRles...dance music in general IS picking up on CHR. For that matter, let's talk Kim Sozzi. Yes, "Feel Your Love" was heard on Pulse 87 last year. It finally branched to CHR! A lot of "urban" tracks are starting to have "beats" in them. Things are picking up despite all of these happenings.

Everyone here knows how much I LOVE this music and will continue to push positivity for it; it will end when I die. But I hope that this sort of thing NEVER happens again.

I'd put my trust in Tony much moreso than the owners of Mega Media. If Pulse were to go away Tony would be among the first to find a way to get stations like KTU and WXRK 92.3 Now, along with Z-100 and 106.1 BLI, to pay more attention to Dance music.

Ok, time to set the record straight.

Whether we agree, disagree, hate, love, whatever ... be it dance, dance radio, opinion, disagreement or arguing, I want it stated personally that I have contacted Tony Santiago, and now here, to commend him, his passion, his tireless enthusiasm, his ability to think of all sides of an issue (and I admit, I don't all the time,) and is able to succinctly point a discussion into a path, stay on topic and get a true message out there than anyone I have ever known or met in my many yeas in radio.

For Tony, and his supportive following, be they right, wrong or indifferent, you have chosen as a leader, one of the most effective, caring, time giving, thoughtful people you could ever have on your side. Tony needs, in my opinion, despite the things going on with Pulse, to lead a strong following of Pulse fans, admirers and supporters right to the steps of the radio station and fill the sidewalk in a peaceful way to exhibit the care and support you have for Pulse directly to the owners, so they can see it and feel it.

I'd elect Tony to lead such a march whether it was to CBS, Emmis, Cumulus, Entercom, Citadel ... anywhere.

I've been in radio a long, long time ... and there are few communicators who can say it with conviction, state it with unbridled pride and cause action, not just reaction, than Tony.

I've got issues with a stock that is today at $.0085 and has asked its listeners to bail them out.

Mega Media owes each of you a lot. It's a business ... and without yours, there would be no Pulse 87 ... and without the voice of Tony Santiago, you wouldn't have a leader that I'd put in charge of a dance radio station in any size market ... today.

No matter what happens to Pulse, you'll not lose the leadership of Tony and the NY Dance Music Coalition. He's there for you and if broadcasters would only take the same dedication and comittment he has ... radio would be a lot better off.

Congratulations, Tony and his supporters. You're an amazing, loyal group that any radio station would give its heart for ... thanks to people like Tony. Thank you and best wishes.

Tony love what your doing with the dance coalition. I highly reccomend you and Nick look into a Site dedicated to Streaming Dance music NON STOP. Break new artists...local guys...sell advertisers in with Display ads on the main site and filter in a few ideas here and there to keep it fresh. I think pulse should hold a HUGE concert with artists/labels they have relationships with who wont charge them an arm and a leg.

As far as the Radiothon goes. They miss-executed by a few things.
1 - Doing it out of nowhere...when you hear a jock on friday saying we have a major announcement..fans think contest or event..not bankruptcy..
2- Most Beg-A-Thons have Goals...
3 - No monetary value was being updated...at an hourly or timely rate...

and Nick - PBS "gets away" with telethons because they are not a commercial station

Borasio said at an event on Sunday that he would make a major announcement on Monday. I thought it would be a concert on the scale of Birthday Bash or Beatstock. Not imminent bankruptcy.

they need a concert like that to raise spirits of everyone...and the morale of their staff...im sure artists would perform for no costs...its all about the venue...certainly cant pull off a jones beach or pnc like beatstock

well, think about it..... Z-100, the nation's BIGGEST CHR station, is in the same market as Pulse 87. We know darn well that Z and NOW were paying attn to the little station that could. they knew they could catch the next single that would be chr friendly, they have the platform for it. they could put their little spin on it and watch it explode. think about it.... pulse 87 was not around when David Guetta's "Love Is Gone" was first released in europe and on satellite radio in June 2007. By that time, most dance stations already had that track and most die-hard dance fans grew tired of it after hearing it more than 100x. Pulse debuts Feb. 2008 and plays it too.... but in moderation, imho. Love is Gone is released as a single here in the states in May 2008. Z-100 picks it up shortly before that summer and once again, takes a song..... plays it out and makes die-hard dance fans like me cringe and almost smash my radio. they beat anything to death that has some life left in it. then those rejected, bloody and abused tracks get thrown down the hall to KTU where they live out their painful slow death.

ugh. anyhow... point being... if it weren't for Pulse, Z-100 wouldn't have jumped to get david guetta's tracks or kim sozzi. simple.

I don't think of myself as a hater, but from a radio business standpoint, I think Z100 has a little more to lose on a song than Pulse does... you're talking about the CHR station with the most listeners in the nation... with a cume over 5 million in NY and surrounding markets... When it's on Z100, you know it's a hit, PERIOD! That's why people tune in! Z tests its music and when they add something, you can usually count on widepread adds for that song at CHR's across the nation. Most people don't sit there with a calendar crossing off the days between when one station starts playing a song and then others do.

There have been times, I've heard pulse dj's say, new music first, and when its done I'm like THROW IT BACK because I just don't like it!!! However, when you're the little guy up against the 800lb gorilla, you have nothing but to try and beat songs out of the box, and Pulse will jump on it to say they had something first or new, whether it becomes a hit or not, thats the name of the game.

As for on here... I think sometimes we all get so wrapped up in our little radio world, that we don't see the bigger picture. Most people still think of KTU as a dance station... it may not be all the latest hottest dance, but it's dance in the average person's eyes with a mix of classic, retro, and pop/dance remixes; and with a cume of 5.2 million listeners in NYC and surrounding markets, it is the most listened to dance station in America... so when they play Kaci Battaglia, Fette Le Grand, Guru Josh Project, Rodger Sanchez, Kathy Phillips, Anna Grace, Wendel, the Freemasons or the countless others that KTU has spotlighted in its mashups and mix segments this year it's exposing more pure dance artists to the masses!

WHOA!!!!! (Peeling myself off a wall since this statement blew me away!) ;D

Thank you! (Wow I'm actually blushing on this!) Though, it's really a labor of love all around. You have a lot of dance music fans devoted to the music :) Whatever we may have done, we do it for fans such as myself and as a collective :)

Hopefully broadcasters could see the devotion based on what happened Monday and consider the dance music format as viable in their own marketplaces.

Thank you again! :) I'm touched!

Now...WHERE IS MarcR for this statement
since he doesn't think that I can actually be objective here.....

Thanks "The Truth".

You are right though, Pulse did mis-execute some things regarding this. I actually KNEW about this radio-thon last Thursday and for those that are members of the coalition (via MySpace or Facebook), I did give a "heads up" in advance about something major and that "the dance music community must unite like never before". I wasn't going to wait it out for Monday if something this critical was about to happen....I owe it to them to know what was going on. And yeah, I have NO idea what was collected out of this, no goals. And the one thing that has left me with a "bitter taste"....that management has YET to address everyone after the fact because once all was said and done, I had more questions to figure.

If people were donating money, then had it returned and all of a sudden, POOF, we're okay, we're still here....I think we all have a right to know something, especially that this was presented in the public manner that it was.

by the wording they used ("convential means of funding") I think they were told to cut the radiothon short because they are commercial and to just get more advertisers by the fcc...

Huh? Do you really think the FCC, which can't control piracy in NY, actually TOLD them to cut the radiothon?

When was the last time the FCC did something without an official compaint and forms filled out in triplicate?

I think what was more likely is their own lawyers told them to stop because they weren't a non-profit. Plus they hadn't received all that much money in the first place. It wasn't gonna make much difference.

yea you are right that is a possibility as well...just the no updates throughout the day and the out of the blue stoppage is very non radiothon esque

I'm curious...do you know how much Pulse took in on this? I've been trying to get that answer! PM me here if you want.

Didn't someone here say they got $25K from Facebook?
No, I said they got 2500 members in the Save Pulse 87 Facebook group at the time the donation collection stopped

Not sure but in order to get more listeners, could pulse put in a contract to move to the empire state building? Since the DTV change over there is no 877 in philly and in providence. Just wondering

As long as the Philly station is still broadcasting in digital on Channel 6, I see no way that WNYZ could move to Empire. Apparently there's also a low-powered Channel 6 in New Haven, which has since applied to move to channel 41, so I'm not sure if there is anything that could be done to expand their signal towards the east, at least.

Let's keep in mind that Mega Media doesn't own the frequency, but leases it from Island Broadcasting.
