Radio 106.7 is no more

It's now "GenX 106.7". I just heard the change. Last song was "(It's the)End of the World" by REM, first song was "Get Ready For This"2 Unlimited.

Wow...it looks like a format move that's truly differentiated locally and really makes some sense may have finally occurred on a decent signal  -- and from CC Columbus, no less.  I'm kind of speechless.  I'm so used to invoking the time-tested "lost opportunity" lament, but I can't this time!  Feels weird.

Would be even nicer if they could find some way to beef up the signal a bit around downtown...or move the format to 93.3...but I'm not complaining  :).

BTW, this makes even more sense given CD101's likely move to a better signal.  Wonder if that figured into the decision?  My guess would be "probably not."

Interesting. Same "last song" that STAR 107.9 had before they flipped to syndicated oldies back in 2001.

Thank you Clear Channel and Mr. Florentino! So far this station rocks! The mix of music is fantastic. It's about damn time Columbus got a station like this. I'm so happy right now. Thank you thank you thank you!

In case my first post seemed a little laid back and analytical, let me make it clear that I completely share your reaction! Don't know if TF was involved in this or not, but if so thanks to you and whoever else was part of the change. I'm guessing Laura Lee is still the PD, and local CC programming chief JohnBoy Crenshaw and others were no doubt involved.

how was radio 106.7 doing in the ratings ?

Pretty consistently around a 1.7-2.0 12+ AQH share over the past year.  I think their peak had been about 2.5.  I know they performed better in-demo (as would be expected), although that is based on data that's over a year old.

I would think that signal should be able to snag at least a 3.0, maybe even 4+.  Unless they drop the ball somewhere (which I am NOT expecting), I'd wager this new approach has some excellent upside for 106.7, especially in-demo.

This is all Ms. Lee, Mr. Crenshaw, and our SVP of Programming. And it's another example of CC moving away from Premium Choice where there's a local strategic upside. My friends at Mix are now also officially on notice. ;)

Will we hear fewer golds played on WNCI now? The most current I heard on 106.7 was "Sexy Back" by Justin Timberlake.
I LOVE IT!

The last three songs were:
Pearl Jam's "Last Kiss"
Papa Roach's "Last Resort"
R.E.M.'s "It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)".

The Pearl Jam and R.E.M. songs had not been heard on 106.7 in a long while.

Just in time for the PPM! :) This format *should* do quite well :)

Radio 106.7 repositioned just a few weeks ago as "Columbus' Modern Rock" and was starting swing back towards a lighter alternative sound again. I had heard Wonderwall, Mysterious Ways, and even Elderly Woman Behind The Counter just the other day. But a change was definitely coming... Between the increase of PSAs airing and "Buy ads on Radio 106.7" ads, plus PPM coming to town, I think everyone saw the writing on the wall. I definitely enjoyed the station during its television tunes stunting and first incarnation as a light alternative station.

Like I said a few weeks ago, Gen X would definitely be a way to keep Mix away from WNCI, and judging from Florentino's post, it sounds like that's the plan.

Is Rover going to stay in the mornings? It really bugs me that his show lasts until 11 AM.

Here's hoping Shane "Rover" French got canned with the switch. He can't hold on to any affiliates to save his life. It's a Cleveland thing. In any event, French's show is incompatible with the new format.

Mmm, with that being said, (PPM about to begin) could we see another station such as WJZA about to flip? The smooth jazz format has not faired well with the new rating system. Could this station see a format change soon?

On a personal, I hate to see any smooth jazz station go.

As an aside, I can see one way where the *very* welcomed flip at 106.7 flip would make it even *more* appropriate for 93.3 WLZT to segue to Classic Hits (beyond the fact that Columbus is probably the largest market where that loved-by-PPM format has no real presence):

If 93.3 went Classic Hits, CC Columbus would then have an FM cluster which spans the spectrum of upbeat popular music from last 40 years or so through today, except for a logical gap at the 00's to steer well clear of current-based cash cow WNCI.  And demo-wise, wouldn't Classic Hits still be a thorn to WSNY?  After all, Classic Hits is essentially just a form of gold-based AC.

Would be a thorn for WSNY .. and a killer for 104.3 FM... So you could get SAGA with two punches!.
