Radio 106.7 is no more

Louisville has a morning guy (music heavy) and just announced a week or two ago that they hired a mid-day jock.
So some staff in a few months I bet.

One little tidbit for those who don't already know:  One of the people behind 106.7's flip, CC national SVP Programming Jon Zellner, began his radio career in Columbus.  He was at 92X and WNCI for a couple years around 1990 doing both on-air and asst music director work.  His latest position before coming to CC about a year ago was music programming chief for Sirius XM.  He's always seemed like a really sharp guy, and I was glad to see him come over to CC since it of course dominates in Columbus.

EDIT: Just now read the article ryangonzo posted earlier in the thread, about the format's inroads nationally, and notice that Zellner is quoted in there.

I THINK the morning guy in Louisville is voice tracked out of another market...I remember reading something on it on the Louisville board.
I'd look for a morning show, but beyond that, music and commercials.
This move was no doubt in advance of the PPM. I look for Gen X to do well with the PPM.
As far as the new guy on here that was upset about Radio 106.7 going away, why not just stream a station online? Radio 106.7 was never a player, hopefully Gen X will be. So far i'm liking what i'm(barely)hearing...I live on the fringes of Gen X's signal coverage, and yes, as a 33 year-old I am in Heaven right now with this station! Good thing I can stream it if I want to.

Although it's not a Rhythmic AC station, I would have Gen X follow the same pattern that 106-7 The Beat does out of Detroit. They have syndicated premium choice jocks but they actually follow The Beat's music log, they also interact w/ listeners and say the station name! The average listener can't tell they're tracked. I'd get a music-heavy morning show just like The Beat and bring on some women-friendly jocks like Billy The Kidd, Cubby, and others. Would be cool to get some jingles too! GEN X RADIOOO one-oh-six-sevennn! :D

Laura's still adding music. I'm hearing more repeats, but mixed in with some newer stuff. I have a feeling we'll see jocks, more imaging, and more music very soon. They're working on it!

The Gen X station here in Kansas City has one live jock so far; it transitioned out of a Hot AC format. They are actually taking pot shots on the air at Jack FM, which has three live jocks and has been moderately successful. I wonder if two "variety/adult hits" stations have ever competed like that in the same market.

louisvilles gen x does quite well i bet $$$ columbus will also.

Matthew Blades whom does mornings on gen x louisville is voicetracked and also does mornings on mix 969 phoenix.

Its a good station but needs to broaden there playlist more i am talking about louisville. If i here losing my religion or two princes or all i wanna do i will scream but to be fair they do go somewhat deep but it is much better then that piece of trash louie fm that was the previous occupant of 100.5 in the ville.

Wish we had a cool alt station like u all do w cd101/1025

For quite awhile Indianapolis had two Adult Hits -- Jack and the Track (sounds like a nursery rhyme).

Wow, not often I hear someone from another market saying they're envious of a cool Columbus station. Even if I liked 101's music, I just can't stand their goofy-sounding jocks. They sound like they're playing 1979 hip DJ, and seem full of themselves when they should be embarrassed instead. They're the only station in town where I think the jocks are truly, truly bad. The others are all OK-to-good.

this format will fail just as bad as TED did. This radio bi-polar disorder. it would be fine if it were a bunch of radio geeks but to the average listener, do you honestly expect anyone to sit through 2 songs in a row?

Last 10
1. Skid Row - I Remember You
2. Technotronic - Move This
3. Lil' Jon/east Side Boyz/ying Yang Twins - Get Low
4. Linkin Park - In The End
5. Matchbox 20 - Back 2 Good
6. U2 - Pride
7. C&c Music Factory - Gonna Make You Sweat
8. Blind Melon - No Rain
9. After 7 - Can't Stop
10. Oasis - Wonderwall

They take some getting used to but now I don't mind them at all. They are definitely different though.

This is better thought out than Ted, and on a better signal. There's a method to the madness. Also, 90's music partisans tend to be more open to a variety of styles than early-80's and 70's-music partisans. The name of the game with PPM is cume, so 106.7 should do fine if they're a preset that a listener with less-diverse tastes punches up for a song or two -- even if that listener defects for awhile when a song comes on they don't like.

Another Midwestern station, WARH St. Louis, actually plays Olivia Newton-John and Led Zeppelin in the same hour. Certainly no less "bi-polar" than what you see here. And they've been at or near the top 25-54 for years now, and a solid #1 25-54 the whole time the PPM's been in St. Louis. That may also be due in part to good execution on non-music elements, but the fact remains that mixing diverse styles CAN work -- bigtime.

Check this out...

Not only are they playing some jams from back in the day, they're playing remixes of some of these songs! I just heard Usher's "You Make Me Wanna" with a dance beat.

Kudos to Clear Channel!

That's the only version of the song I've heard. And I've heard it at least 3 times. They also play the radio edit of Dee-lite's Groove is in the Heart, which was disappointing. The one without the little rap in the middle.

It appears Radio 106.7 is still alive and kicking on 106.7 HD2...

Am I imaging it, or have others noticed that they seem to be moving toward a greater number of hip-hop-intensive stretches, e.g. where 50% or more of the music is hip-hop for a 20 or 30 minute period? Has there actually been an increase, or is it just a function of when I've happened to tune in? While hip-hop should definitely be part of the mix, it seems like one of the elements that could be most polarizing in concentrated doses.

I actually noticed the opposite. Quite a few 80s and Hot AC tracks in bunches. A lot of Gin Blossoms, U2, Bon Jovi and Def Leppard. Also, when they do play anything remotely hip-hop, it's the same 5 or 6 songs.

Guess it depends on when you listen. I've also heard plenty of U2 and hair bands.

As for the repetition, tight lists have become the norm nationally for CC music stations in almost every format. It may vary a little by market, but compared to other groups CC has a reputation for having some of the shortest lists and fastest rotations. So I was fully prepared for this. Actually, there's somewhat less repetition than I was expecting. (It remains to be seen whether I'll still be saying that in a few weeks...but regardless I'll still be happy about the flip :).)
