Radio 106.7 is no more

As for the repetition, tight lists have become the norm nationally for CC music stations in almost every format. It may vary a little by market, but compared to other groups CC has a reputation for having some of the shortest lists and fastest rotations. So I was fully prepared for this. Actually, there's somewhat less repetition than I was expecting. (It remains to be seen whether I'll still be saying that in a few weeks...but regardless I'll still be happy about the flip :).)

There is such a huge pool of songs that fit the categories they are already playing. Especially by the same artists. Let's hope this is just a sample of what's to come. A few hundred songs will be a big disappointment.

Thought I'd post the link to this April 27 "Ross on Radio" about 90's formats, since it now takes on more relevance locally. It includes a "Fresh Listen" to CC's original GenX Radio in Louisville. It looks like the local GenX is following a very similar course. I looked this up hoping there would be some discussion of list size, but there isn't (type of content, yes -- size, no).

I also noticed more Hip Hop at night. WNCI has day-parted for years so are we to assume 1067 will be doing the same thing?

Yeah, now that you mention it I think I was listening late when I noticed the stretches that seemed more hip-hop intensive.

Funny, how the same old rules keep coming back a decade later! I have seen this for the past 40 years, play what the advertisers expect during the day, what the Kid's want at night.

Just realized that 106.7 will provide CC corporate with its very first PPM-based read on this GenX approach that they've already rolled out in several smaller markets.  None of those earlier markets are due to get the PPM anytime soon, but in Columbus subscribers are already seeing PPM test ratings in preparation for the official September rollout.  In fact, I wonder if this angle may have figured into the great decision to flip106.7 to this format?

I hope that, in evaluating the results, the CC honchos are careful to take into account that 106.7's signal does have limitations.  It's a lot more viable than the average Columbus rimshot, but still far from city-grade, including around downtown.  The coverage map suggests somewhat better reach than the actual signal performance.  So while they could see a nice boost, there is a ceiling unless they can somehow manage a signal upgrade (which would be nice -- and if anyone's good at that, it's CC).  Or better yet, to guage the format's true PPM potential move it to 93.3 :).

The only way to upgrade the signal south is to get rid of Ross 1065 or move it farther south. There might be issues of intermod too. But, I'm sure of all this has been looked over a million times. Maybe they have or haven't, but position the bays towards the city. Could get a 6db boost doing that. Signal probably is the fartherest south it can go(might be able to move a couple of miles south/se)...minus putting tower closer to/in the city. Good luck getting that past a city council.

With 107.1 and 106.3, it's about as close to the city as it can get.

Now that the dust has settled and I've come to my senses... The playlist for Gen X is extremely too tight and this new station is not nearly as good as I thought it was. There's not enough hip hop and they play way too much Aerosmith. Gen X is getting old real quick and it's not even been 2 weeks.

Thank God for Eminem's new Recovery album or I wouldn't have anything good to listen to in the car.

Dawg,

You remind me of myself! Unfortunately, the station isn't meant to have a lot of hip-hop. Columbus needs another CHR or Rhythmic.... will it happen? It's possible since PPM is here. New stations work very well in PPM.

If someone would just take all the old school hip hop and r&b hits that Gen X plays and mix it in with some of todays hip hop and r&b hits then Columbus would have one hell of a radio station.

The bloom is off the rose, huh? Not for me. I'm not saying this is my "dream format," but I like it a lot, and independent of my personal tastes I bet it will prove to be a smart move for CC as long as there are no major missteps. It's nice to see many of my "CC/Columbus will never do this" or "CC/Columbus will never do that" posts dis-proven with this move.

It's a cool station, but it does need to expand its playlist.
It will...slowly. No need to burn out the audience quickly. Remember, there are folks out there that are just discovering this station, unlike us "radio geeks" who discovered it two weeks ago and spread the word like wildfire. Jon Zellner, the guy behind this format, is an extremely bright guy and knows Columbus well. Personally, I think this station is programmed brilliantly...and one of the best things to happen to Columbus radio in a long, long time.

dawg, see my other post on why I think they're making a smart move programming tight right now. Jon Zellner knows his stuff. This guy is a smart programmer.
Too much Aerosmith? Not really. Remember, this station is encompassing all music styles from the 90s and won't fit everyone's desires. Also, too much rap/hip-hop will drive away the female-geared audience. I think they have a nice balance. Yesterday during my trip to Columbus I heard plenty of it("Shoop", "Hypnotize", "Wild Thing"). Remember, too much of a good thing is no longer a good thing. I am in the target age group for this station and I liked everything 90s, and that's what this station has been since day one. For every "Shoop" you'll get a Nirvana or an Aerosmith tune. Balance here is key.

Here is a log of their tunes from 5-9 AM on Sunday the 11th. A helluva mix if you ask me. Eve f/Gwen Stefani "Let Me Blow Your Mind", Soundgarden "Black Hole Sun", Sir Mix-A-Lot "Baby Got Back", Goo Goo Dolls "Black Balloon", Neneh Cherry "Buffalo Stance", Nelly "Ride Wit Me", Nirvana "Smells Like Teen Spirit", Blink 182 "All The Small Things", Harvey Danger "Flagpole Sitta", and Alicia Keys "Fallin'".

Three weeks, and still no mention of the format flip in the Dispatch.  So presumably there never will be.  Very strange and uncharacteristic.  There was a press release issued, after all.  And the Distort, er, Dispatch certainly gave plenty of coverage to the WOSU-WWCD swap.

As the playlist expands, 106.7 is getting much better. The potential music library is huge, so they have a lot to work with. I'm more impressed now than at launch.
