Radio 106.7

Funny, I was going to say the opposite. I don't like that everything is rendered as an image. This coming from a computer programmer though and I'm all about dynamic content. Often times what a nerd likes is not what the saavy public likes.

And said image has a huge resolution (1200x1000). Looks OK on a 24" widescreen, not sure it needs to be that size for a web page though.

Here's an interesting coincidence. I recently came across an article by Joey Sweeney that I had almost forgotten about. It was published in the Philadelphia Weekly on March 15, 2000, and it's titled "Things the Fanzines Taught Us". The piece is about 'zines in general and mine in particular. Across the upper third of the page is something reprinted from our publication's first year, with the caption "Could rock ever get any better than this? The results of The Offense's 1980 Readers' Poll." And in the article, The Offense, which came to an end in 1989 after over one hundred issues, is described as "scene-y, didactic, and always incredibly enthusiastic. It always told the truth about music. And at that point in time, there was so much to tell."

Yeah, how about that, once upon a time Philadelphia sort of looked up to Columbus. I had subscribers in that wonderful Pennsylvania town as well as in all of the other major cities in the United States. But today an opportunity arises and we can't even come up with an original radio station of our own; we have to borrow one of theirs instead. How ironic. How sad.

Hey, here's a special one-time-only offer for Radio-Info fans: be one of the first ten people to e-mail me at [email protected] and provide me with your mailing address, and I'll send you a free copy of The Offense as well as a copy of Mr. Sweeney's thought-provoking article. Wow, what a deal! Enjoy.

This may not be a popular post, but I think you guys are being WAY too picky. I think the station is really entertaining. Sure, there are a few things I would tweak, but for the most part we've got a winner here. Enjoy the offering and chill out on the nitpicking. You guys sound like a bunch of broads in a stitching circle. It's a brand new station with a brand new PD. Out of the block they are doing quite well on a number of levels IMO. The kinks will get worked out in time.

Doc, not all ten of those Offenses are gone yet. Please e-mail me and request one!

Alans613, I just read your latest post on one of the other 142 WRXS topics on this board, and you need a copy of it, too -- gosh, we're on the exact same wavelength! (Er, I think -- how far back does your "gold" go?)

Obviously there's been a big range of opinions on 106.7 on this and other threads, but overall I'd say it averages at to at least mildly positive -- certainly more positive than I've seen for anything besides the 80's version of WHKC. This is especially true for some of the more recent posts. And no, I'm not applying weights.

And we have jocks... followed by a 610 WTVN jingle / ID?
Haha... I know that feeling from my job. Nothing makes your heart sink faster than when the wrong thing runs.

I agree with SportsRadioDoc. For what it's worth, I like listening to the station. Especially in AM Drive. Morning radio in this town blows. I give them credit for at least trying something different. Fewer commercials and from what I understand, no stupid contests. I'm not sure what everyone's beef with the station is? Not that it matters...I'm no programming expert. Just a curious bystander.

Dave:

You must be streaming. The "Fill" category in Prophet sets audio to "All Hours" on stations that are added after the initial install. Needless to say, we got that fixed PDQ, and got yet another helpful lesson on our automation.

I just went through the same thing. Each item will need to have its play availability reset, as each defaults to "yes" for the streaming station! (Booooo.....)

Hey guys, I'm new to this site, I just signed up so I could post this.

My name is Stephen and write for a School Newspaper around here. I'm trying to write a really good article this month about Radio 106.7 (to make up for my terrible article last month about recycling ;D).

It would help me out a bunch if some of you guys could post for me some quotes you might want me to use in the story (and if so, please leave me your name and your job, or whatever makes you knowledgeable about Radio 106.7) or any background info that would contribute to the depth and the quality of the story.

Thanks for the help,
Stephen

Well there is plenty of info on all these threads here. Also Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WRXS

Please feel free to get in touch with me, Stephen, and/or help yourself to everything that I've posted so far. My e-mail address is on the previous page of this thread, my name is Tim (jakej is just Czechoslovakian for "Jackets", as I'm a big NHL fan), my job is sporadically unemployed, and my 106.7 knowledge comes from what I've heard on it so far, and from what I know we could have all so wonderfully heard on it instead, had my and my format's audition for Mr. Crenshaw been a bit more successful. Yeah, same songs every day, the same songs that are already played on stations both here and in Philadelphia. So instead of Spirit 106.7, Radio Xerox Station (WRXS) reigns supreme -- and it all sounds like a sentence that's been handed down by some court.

Stephen,

The absolute best thing you could do is not use anything from anybody here. 95+% of the people here don't know what they're talking about, speculate from a position of knowing nothing, repeat others' speculation and opinion, and eventually turn ridiculous speculation and opinion into "the absolute truth that always has been." Except for the fact that it's all wrong and always has been.

Call the station and talk to someone who's actually involved. Have your questions ready (written out) and a recording device ready to record what is said. Don't email other than to mention that you'll be calling or to ask permission to call. The people who are actually involved are extremely busy; emailing questions is asking for 30-60 minutes of time while calling (with recording device ready) is asking for only 2-3 minutes of time.

If you can't get an actual source, consider making use of the station's website, stopping by and asking for the sales materials the station is using (they surely have some printed materials describing the station to potential clients), or just describing the music on the station from your point of view and from other students' points of view. The opinions offered by most here are almost guaranteed to be inaccurate and even strange.

What a perfect description of conservative talk hosts and their rabid fans...along with most of the Christian Right. And of course the President, with the classic case being WMD. I don't usually like to get political here, but this was just too good to pass up.

thanks for the advice guys. I guess i should throw out that my purpose here is to get a feel on general opinion, as well as maybe collect some useable quotes that exemplify that opinion.

As far as facts go, I plan to call the clear channel people who have been kind enough to respond in a timely manner to my attempts at contacting them.

Thanks for the advice.

FWIW, I notice that WBOS in Boston recently changed to a format that seems to have a pretty similar music mix to 106.7 and its predecessors. The station's moniker is -- what else -- Radio 92.9. However, WBOS is owned by Greater Media, not Clear Channel. They describe it as "mass-appeal alternative rock that plays a combination of alternative gold, along with today's rock and alternative."

Variants of the approach do appear to be catching on. But I'd note that, unlike Columbus, Boston has a long history of strong Alternative radio.

I wonder if the resurgence in Rock Radio has to do with the People Meters that are going to roll out every where. I read somewhere at some point the People Meters favor rock formats over the rhy/hiphop in the traditional ratings.

I have to say I do like 106.7.

Clear channel has tons of billboards around town for the format too! I see them it seems everywhere I go.

The PPM has a lot to do with the many "rock" changes happening around the country including Radio 106.7 here in Columbus. But remember that the PPM development is on-going and the astute leaders and thinkers in our industry are just starting to get somewhat of a handle and this appears to be the first revelation (of many) to come out of their observations. Why do I think they may have jumped the gun without enough research and time to really take a good look? Maybe not! Another one to put into this column is the change yesterday of WQCD in New York from 20 years of smooth jazz to WRXP, which on paper, follows the PPM move to an eclectic big apple oriented AAA. Early thinking is that some form of rock will do better in the PPM world, at least to start off, than urban or smooth jazz.
