Radio One Old School 100.3

Alot of stations start sounding good before flipping. Even Mix 95.7 did. I think its because they stop caring about what the radio consultants say to play, since it doesn't matter anymore.

I like the new Old School formats too. I don't think it will last over the long term, though. There is only so much gold out there, combined with the fact Radio One doesn't go very deep, I think the station will get stale after a year or two and go back in an Urban AC direction.

I don't think it will even last that long. Everytime I turn them on, it's slow jams. With Philly's deep history, they could play so much more than they currently do.

I've been listening to airchecks of WDAS-FM circa 1983 on youtube. I'm amazed by some of the stuff they played then that they would NEVER play now. If WRNB played those songs, both what WDAS-FM won't play now plus what traditional philly urban radio currently programs, they could pull some of WOGL's audience as well as WDAS's.

Since they won't, my guess is they start adding currents to the playlist in January 2014.

I say give it a year or two because Radio One is slow with figuring these types of things out.

I think Radio One desperately needs to replace Jay Stevens. He controls all the programming. The PD's basically shuffle the same 200 songs in the system because they're handicapped by corporate. They can't even add a song without calling DC.

Radio One is losing in almost every market where they have direct competition. Majic and Hot in Atlanta, Old School in Charlotte, The Beat and Old School in Dallas, Kiss and Hot in Detroit, Hot and WRNB in Philly, Power in Richmond and Majic in DC are all losing stations.

The only stations where they're winning are WKYS in DC (I'll give them that one), Old School in St Louis (16th place, not really sure if you can call that winning. KMJM just swapped signals too) and Foxy 107/104 (WBZJ is new and growing, but their signal is in a really bad place).

11 losing, 3 winning. I think the numbers speak for themselves.

This is a vast oversimplification of Radio One's position in these markets. I agree, their Philly cluster needs a lot of work. But, Majic in Atlanta has overtaken WALR-FM in Atlanta in the last few months, and Majic beats WHUR in the 25-54 ratings. In some of the cases you mentioned, I think the markets are just saturated with Urban formats, and Radio One needs to diversify in that way. But, calling all of these losing stations based on 12+ numbers does not give the whole picture. They clearly have a strategy.

I agree you can't base it only on the 12+, but I can't see the breakdowns.

They haven't changed their strategy in years. They're still doing the same thing, expecting different results. They may try a new format, but that's about it.

I would expect a company that prides itself on serving the black community, would serve it a little better, and know a little bit more about the audience.

I'll have to disagree with some of that. The Atlanta cluster is far from losing; otherwise Hot 107.9 would have flipped formats long ago. It is still in the Top 10 in Arbitron there, if not the top 5 anymore, and commands a majority male audience compared to V-103 or the grown folks stations. I highly doubt they'll let WHTA go anyway since that station's existence is crucial because V-103 was the ONLY FM urban outlet in the early 90s once.
Dallas is another story: both Radio One and Service Broadcasting run the urban stations there, and DFW is suffering real bad in that demo since none have reached the Top 10 in Arbitron listernship in months. WKYS wins by default because CBS ran WPGC in the ground in the past few months.

None of their Atlanta stations have ever won against V103. They may be doing better there than in other markets, but that's not the point. The point is there is a pattern of failure at Radio One, and no one can argue with that. This is not about a specific station or specific stations. It's about the big picture, and Jay Stevens not knowing what he's doing.

Cox hasn't surpassed V-103 either when it comes to WALR or its past stations WBTS or WFOX.
V-103 has always been the bread and butter for Atlanta radio, so there is no chance it will get knocked off the Top 3 by its compeitors as long as it is still on the air. This is due to its 36 year history of its BROADBASED urban contemporary format that has not been swayed to mainstream (12-34) or adult (25-54) demos, a well invested music selection and carrying a full market 100kw stick unlike the rimshots. They play it smart no matter how many times the others try to inch up their audience share points against them.

I heard a promo on WRNB by Jerry Blavett that's all but an endorsement of the format switch. Is he about to become one of their on-air jocks? I honestly can't remember when a local radio legend did that for a station that never employed them.
