Radio Shack To Become The Shack

may be just as well if they go the way of buggy whips...last time i went in one and asked for a 1/4 inch phone plug..they guy gave me a 20 foot phone cord. i explained what i wanted and he just stood there..i then drew a picture on what i wanted he said oh..those things are in a drawer over here..but thats not what they're called..he pulled one out in a radio shack bag and it said "1/4 inch phone plug"..i had to explain that years ago before ipods and color tv..they were used to connect phone lines at switchboards.."whats a switch board"..my answer 'do you take debit cards"...seriously the radio hobbiest's that frequented radio shacks over the years im sure have greatly diminished and i cant see a lot of people buying pc's, cells phones. and all the other overpriced toys they stocked..

This is hilarious and so true. I took a part time job at Radio Shack about 5 years ago. I was told and trained to sell cellphones. Thats it. Anything else in the store is just to get people in the door and push a cell contract on them. I got bored and left after a month and a half. I was hoping for the days of Radio Shack past where I could help a fellow radio enthusiast with finding a "1/4 inch phone plug" but we'd get maybe one customer a week like that. Oh and you are right about the pay. Minimum wage plus a small commission on accepting a cell phone payment and a larger commission on selling a cell contract. Why don't they just change the name to "Phone Shack"?

They've been calling themselves The Shack for a good little while now. But all their merchandise and website still have Radio Shack on them...

The other day, my local Radio Shack had a cassette repair kit for sale, and for a steal of a price - $1.00. I bought two. ;D

Most of the time when I go into the Shack and they ask if I need help, I just tell them I'll get it myself. I think these stories about radio shack are funny. the other day I was in the store to buy a 1/8" "phone plug" so i went up to the counter, and the clerk asked me If I wanted anything else, I replyed "no, and I don't want a cellphone either". he just laughed. I used to tinker with television sets and had a TV that had a bad color crystal that caused it to go to b/w. I knew radio shack sold them, because I had seen them, so when I went to the store, the clerk was following me around asking me what I wanted, so I thought it would be fun to actually tell him. I told him i wanted a 3.58Mhz color crystal. you should have seen the look on his face, he looked like a deer in the headlights. he then started to try to cover his butt and act like he knew what he was talking about, asking if I really thought they had it, since he had no idea what I was talking about. after a few seconds of him being completley clueless, I just told him I'd find it myself since I knew they sold them. When I went to pay for it, he was like "I'll be damned" we DO have those.
Another time i overheard a salesman telling a customer he needed a VHS/UHF adapter for his antenna. (back when sets had seperate UHF/VHF antenna terminals) I've had similar funny encounters with them over the years. Radio Shack employees do fine if you ask for help with a cell phone, but If you ask for a part for a radio/TV or some project you are working on, watch their heads explode. Of course, they never admit it when they are stumped, Its just funny watching them stammer.
