If it's a failure, those stations will switch formats. So far, the only ones who have dropped AA are in ownership changes or the fiasco during the first month with LA and Chicago.
By the way, nobody in talk radio looks at 12+ ratings. Until you are in your late teens, you think AM on a dial refers to the time. Even then most people under 24 don't listen to talk radio. I don't hear too many Mountain Dew or Spring Break ads on talk stations.

Rush launched on small AM rimshotters in a lot of places. Here in Rochester he appeared first on the then-daytime only WYSL in Avon, a southern suburb. He was carried live (he's been time-shifted towards drive-time since he moved to the 50kw WHAM 1180 affiliate here) in part because the Avon station had to get off the air before WBZ in Boston obliterated its signal as the sun went down. Back then he begged for calls. He waited more than a minute for one caller to get to the phone one day, cracking jokes along the way. Before he became part of the establishment, he was somewhat amusing even for liberals to listen to. But these days his show is front and centered on White House talking points. That's the equivalent of Radio Moscow. Boring and predictable.
