Rangers going to ESPN?

jeffdfw said:
Aren't Citadel and ABC still "in bed together"? Dontcha think a deal could be worked out where WBAP could carry the conflicting games?

Rumors going around that Citadel might merge with Cumulus. What will happen to KSCS? Cumulus already owns KPLX

Interesting how this would shake out.

My guess is one would be branded Nashville country and the other Texas country. Both are pretty strong and could probably still coexist.

What about the two talkers with WBAP and KLIF? No doubt, KLIF gets flipped. Maybe 96.7 will eventually become the new FM home of the Ticket.

I can't imagine why the Rangers would give up the 1080 & 105.3 signals for 103.3, can't see how that makes sense.

Because it's not about signals, it's about money (and it's always about money)

One of the stories on this said that The Rangers will control much more of the ad time than in the past-
that's the same deal the Cowboys took with Cumulus then with CBS- It's Jerry's inventory, Jerry's people sell it, the station just clears his spots and gets very few fringe spots to sell for their own.

Now it's Chuck and Nolan's ad inventory to sell. If the Rangers do well and make it back into the playoffs, Chuck and Nolan get to sell those extra spots and pocket that money- rather than the 2 KRLD's and CBS getting that money.

That is what is all about. They can sell corporate sponsors a package of signage(outside & inside the Ballpark) in-game mentions, radio. TV and pocket all that cash.

KRLD hasn't been in the ball park for years-- that lease is now owned by an architec firm... the studios were moved to Fitzhugh and Central along with the rest of the CBS Cluster..

Just a thought

Wonder what this means for KRLD's studios at the Ballpark?!

They moved out in 2005 or 2006. I think that space is still leased to an architectural firm.

Just heard Ben on the Ben & Skin show mention that when he was at 105.3 management wanted him to hang up on Josh Hamilton because their fans didn't care about the Rangers. This is supposed to be the flagship station of the Rangers and mangement does even want to promote them. I don't blame them for jumping ship.

I suppose the signal is an issue, but I've never had a problem getting 103.3 as I drive around Dallas.

Removing that from the debate for a moment, let's consider the overall strengths and weaknesses of the two stations.

KESN has been around longer as a sports station than The Fan. They've had the Mavericks games for many years now and seem to have done well with them.

The Rangers were on KRLD-AM for a long time before The Fan came along. Then the games got split between the two stations all throughout the season. I think that was probably annoying to the team.

The newest ratings show the two stations with almost identical ratings. Going from one to the other should not effect the reach of the games that much. Having the games on one frequency for pretty much every game of the season with a more established station is probably worth making the change.

Just say that The Rangers are tired of being second fiddle on KRLD-FM, they are still second fiddle on KESN. Plus they would be second fiddle on a station during a critical time in late October.

Not so much. The NBA regular season doesn't star until November.

NBA starts in late Oct. The Mavericks first game this season was Oct. 26.

No, the conflicts would occur in April and afterward, when the Rangers' season starts and the Mavs end their season and start the playoffs.

The problem KESN has is, no sister station because it's an O&O. So that means it'll have to farm out the Rangers on those nights where the Mavs play. My best guess would be to BAP.

No, it's the excuse of the lazy. There are lots of sports topics that could be covered if you had the on-air talent that was engaging enough to make it interesting.

I don't find anything interesting about golf, but usually the morning guys have on CBS golf analyst David Feherty a few times a year and I'll listen to the segment since usually they are pretty entertaining. I'm sure some non-hockey fans don't mind listening to their weekly visit with Razor.

It has a sister station...Disney owns both KMKI and KESN. It has a LMA to program KZMP (which it does by running the ESPN Deportes radio feed on it, so actually it is a 3 station cluster), although the new deal with the Rangers also moves the Spanish-language rights from Univision to ESPN via KZMP, so it will be occupied with the Spanish-language Rangers broadcasts.

Oh, OK. They're listed differently in the ownership list I saw.

So obviously one game will get shunted to Radio Disney. I'd think Mavs playoffs would take priority and stay on the mothership.

I wish we were back in the days when the biggest station in town usually had the major league team broadcasts.

In my world, the Rangers would always be on WBAP where they were from 1974-1994 and could be heard at night in most of the country.

The Braves should still be on WSB and the Cardinals should have never left KMOX. The Cards left for more money and even an ownership stake in another station, but fans have been complaining about the signal ever since and next year they are going back to KMOX.

Of course, baseball on the radio is much more a part of the culture in St. Louis than it is in North Texas.

Those big 50-gallon I-A and I-B flamethrowers were nice to have your games on if you
were a team owner. Still quite a few though--WCBS, WFAN, WTAM, WLW, WGN, KOA,
KNBR, and the aforementioned return to KMOX. What "50s" did I leave out?

Another former I-A years ago was when the Dodgers were on 64/KFI--before it was
positioned as "64/KFI." From '60 or '61 (team started out in El Lay on 50/10 DA-N
KMPC 710) until the '73 or '74(?) move to 5 kw DA-N KABC. It was a treat for a
young radio geek to pick up the KFI signal, since the broadcast quality was so much
better--15 kHz local loop from Dodger Stadium and 5 kHz Telco for road games, while
the Phoenix and Tucson affils were stuck with a 3.5 kHz un-EQed Telco line. ::)

The press release said that in case of a conflict that the Mavericks will remain on KESN and the Rangers will go to KSKY here locally. Right now it looks like 2 Rangers games will be on KSKY when the season starts in April. It all depends on how the Mavericks do in the playoffs, if more games will move to KSKY.
