Regents put the Proposed KXBT sale on the August 22-23 on the Agenda

It's actually a good thing that BMP sold this turd. And yes, it's a turd. It's a great signal that doesn't serve the community, nor does it fill a void that's needed in the market. It has marginal air talent, a bland playlist, and very little that is compelling or interesting to the MAJORITY of listeners (check their ratings). Radiophiles and musicologists may like it, as do some of you that troll this board. But come on, this format and station, from "Big Talker" to this, is a joke. It's a bacon wrapped turd.

OK< we get it - you don't like oldies. There are a lot of people who do, and they are being screwed by UT. I hope the alumni show it in decreased contributions and decreased football ticket purchases. Maybe next time UT will think before they take out the only station playing a format that people like. Sure, maybe somebody else would have bought 98.9 if UT hadn't, and smooth jazz or classical is probably better than another bland corporate top 40 or hip hop or country, or worse - slob sports or lefty righty talk.

Time to dust off antennas and DX rigs, install that Pioneer Supertuner 3D in the dash, so KONO will come in.

Before you invoke ratings, I remind you where KONO shows up in the San Antonio ratings. Or KLUV Dallas, or KRTH Los Angeles, etc. Oldies, done right, is a viable format.

Wow, the earlier post about how UT should champion KAZI's style of community radio is groundless in my opinion. Obviously the sale of a radio station can be to any qualified buyer and they are free, upon purchasing that station, to program it in the way they choose. After all, they are putting up the money and deciding on the investment that they feel will provide the financial support for said investment. It doesn't matter if for profit or non-profit as both classes of station have expenses involved.

It appears to me UT is responding with programming that will be Austin-centric and unduplicated as said programming will move from a currently 'block programmed' station.

To require them to serve KAZI's audience seems much like you buying a new car and me saying where you can drive said car. Certainly you might want to punch holes in this example but at what point does my freedom get superceeded by someone else? Did KAZI not have the option to purchase said station as well? And as for it hurting commercial radio, I'm clueless about this statement. Dooes this not lower the number of slices doled out of the advertising pie for the commercial outlets?

Format is not covered by "affirmative action."

The FCC does not intervene in formats or programming - unless there is a charge of obscenity or indecent material.

And you most certainly are allowed to sell underwriting on an NCE.

The new KUTX will create jobs and support the vibrant music community in Austin. An FCC complaint is a waste of time and money.

There are many options for finding the format you want - pursuing a complaint against UT will lead nowhere.

Amen to that affirmative action comment. Affirmative action is racist to the core anyway. I despise tokenism, and telling a qualified, intelligent African American he only got a job because he is black is reprehensible. Affirmative action always leaves that doubt in his or her mind - and damages their self-esteem. It is time to move past tokenism and be truly color blind.

You say the FCC may not intervene in format, but in auctions minorities get an advantage because they are minorities. I call that intervention!

Come on - KUTX will not create a vibrant music community. That vibrant music community has existed for decades in Austin without KUTX. And I doubt any of the creative music from Austin would pass by UT board of regents approved format.

Creating jobs - well, maybe a few student internships. I expect a lot of it to be automated, maybe even a satellite NPR classical or jazz format with limited staff.

I agree about complaining to the FCC - wasted effort.

i have made old cassette tapes/ cd's of austin radio stations of the past. made my own cd collection of music. and now listening more to my ipod that has over 1,000 songs of oldies classic rock.

internet radio.

no more austin radio for sometime to come.

Re: the auctions - there's a "new entrant" credit which applies equally to small businesses with no existing properties - I don't have a problem with something designed to increase ownership diversity, as they still have to put up money and bid. It at least gives the new entrants a chance, but it's still not free.

KUTX would support and promote the Austin music community - I'm well aware it can exist without them. However public radio music stations often are a great bridge between audience and artist, and contribute to the culture of the community. Admittedly, when KGSR was more "roots" oriented, there wouldn't be as much of a role for the new KUTX. But KGSR has gone more the route of pop alternative and provided space for a locally oriented AAA.

I'm also hearing that KUTX will be hiring new staff as a part of the station to add to their existing music programmers coming over from KUT. Now it may not be a TON of new people, but there will be some job creation.

Great What a perfect time for that, is all the same ol' Christmas Music will be playing on Majic, oh wait I don't listen to Majic anymore since the 70s weekend is gone. I hope they wait until New Years Day, if the FCC approved it. Make that New Years Day 2014 ;D

That sounds like a good guess. But it could happen sooner providing there's no delay in getting FCC approval; the application for the sale was filed at the end of August.
