What other rock stations have Fresno had before KKDJ-105.9. I know these calls date back to the mid or late 1970's as they were used on a Los Angeles station before it was used on 105.9. Was there any AOR or Free Form radio stations in Fresno from the very late 1960's to mid 1970's on the FM dial?

KFIG,(94.5 moved to 101) Rays old hang out, in the Del Web building) KPHD (95.5 moved to 95.7)

The original first AOR, KFIG 94.5 that Ray worked at, I remember well.
Yes KYNO-FM 95.5 (ROCK 96 FM) after KPHD dropped Country in 1976, they were rock before that also, Isay the country format was only for a year 1975-1976 and rocked til going all disco in January of 1979.

For a short time, in 1989-1990 the Z Rock format had an affiliate in Fresno.

Yes they did, It lasted 13 months Feb 1990- March 1991, The satellite format couldn't touch KRZR, but I think it made KRZR more competitive at that time, KRZR quickly went from ROCK 40"Today's Rock and Roll' To More AOR Metal not long after Z-rock launched.

Re: KRZR or KKDJ?

I could pick up KLBS-FM (K-105) here in Sacramento from 1980-1982. "The Central Valley's Rock and Roll Alternative." It was the best!! I guess Fresno's AOR heritage goes back to KFIG (94.5/101.1) from 1968-1977, KPHD (95.5/7-1972-1973; 1976-1979) and, to an extent, early KKDJ (105.9). I've read posts on other sites of AM AOR stations in the area like KOAD (1240) out of Hanford, and KARM (1430) doing Rock in the 1970s, but I have been unable to confirm those stations.

I used to commute between LA and Sacramento a lot around 1990, and clearly remember the Z Rock affiliate at 107.5 FM. I still have my Z Rock dogtags and stickers (107.5 MF....Z Rock). Their signal came in from the Grapevine through to Patterson along I-5. I visited the studios in November 1990 and picked up some of their stickers. They were on 4949 East Mc Kinley in those days, and the studios were total pandemonium.

Another station will replace KRZR in short order. Surprisingly, Fresno IS a Rock 'n' Roll town. I just hope the station owners are local and have a deep music library!!

Now you can win a free HD radio at krzr.com. :-X

This will just make KFRR that much better. I haven't listened to KRZR much since they ess-canned the Front Row for Mancow. They sure did bet on the wrong horse err cow there.

Hey if KFRR would be smart Dump Kevin& Bean and Love Lines, and hire local talent, how about those that worked at KRZR in the past, Rick, Doug and The Rev, and Koyote that knows Active Rock and KRZR. KRZR has always dominated over KFRR and from the start even when KFRR was "It justs rocks" playing active rock METAL artists with the alternative.

105.1 The Blaze of course is who I see being the one that will dominate.

Gotta keep Loveline. I like Hammer, Rash, and Jock I think they do everything the suits will let them get away with, and yes they should go more active rock now but don't dump anything they currently play either. As far as former KRZR jocks, it would be nice to have a local morning show, my vote would be for Rick Roddam in the morning with a news chick and Koyote. Cost $$$.

Was that station owned by Pappas at that time? I remember when 107.5 was a Classic Rock station. "KCLQ". I actualled heard them on their simulcast AM station at 620 (now ethnic KIGS). I also remember when they were Country KCML and simulcasted Modesto's KTRB-860 Country format. (years later, it would be the other way, with KTRB simulcasting All News KMPH-107.5)

Oh yea, how could I forget about KCLQ. Let's see "Joe Collins", anyone remember others that were on the air there? When radio was primarily live, & automation was expensive & unreliable. The lost art of people in control, not program consultant hell.

Don't forget Dean and Don and The Breakfast Club, which moved from KKDJ to KCLQ 107.5, when KCLQ launched in October 1986, which was Fresno's first Classic Rock station. Laurie West was there also.

Pappas didn't buy 107.5 until it had the country format "Camel Country" KCML in the mid 90s. The plan when he bought it was to make it a news station, so he stopped the local Country and went with the simulcast of KTRB while preparing to launch the all news radio KMPH-FM.

KKDJ was by far the best rock station ever in Central California. That station was big market material,so much more professional than any other station around.Dean and Don,the best ever to be heard in Central California. They were my inspiration for getting into the biz back in 87.

Bryan Jones was there for a moment as well as Tom Maul, Dave Kirk. My first stop in Fresno radio. That station was red hot for a brief moment there.
