I think there is a hole for lite ac (or easy) but if it's anything like the Dove in Tampa, it's not a 25-54 winner. If it was me,
I'd put OKV on the big stick and do that Easy thing on 106.5...or urban ac...or young country...or surprise, Rock 106.5
On the other end, I would not be shocked to see the return of Planet Radio to CC...or at least some type of rock format, ala 98ROCK in Tampa. Rock goes away...the hole is open because X would have to shift a ton and piss off their core to cover the lane. Pretty sure Klinger is ready for a move back to Jax...
There is a misconception that a softer, easy listening AC is always old. Easy 93.1 (WFEZ) 25-54 adult and women numbers are impressive. That station was tied and was even beating the 4 decades + AC leader – WLYF – in key cells and not just 45+ with info I have from a few months ago.
WFEZ was designed to be different than The Dove because of specific market reasons. But Cox tweaked The Dove as well. WDUV had been around 15th in 25-54 for decades. Today, it has approached Top 5 status. It's around 10% in 35-44, 25% 45-54 and 45% 55+. Sure WDUV skews older, but there is enough 35-54 to be very competitive. I understand each market is unique. Still, Jacksonville is no different than anywhere else in that a portion of the listening audience will favor lighter music at work or just to relax to at leisure or to help with those stress moments. I don’t believe it is a problem with demand or even viability. Convincing the suits, that a whole other challenge.
As far as how rock has fared after Planet, maybe the emotional connection that existed between the listeners and Planet just went away with the station. The whole idea behind re-branding Rock 105 to Rock 104-5 was so 104-5 could feature many of the songs Planet played - that hole in the market thing. Perhaps the Planet brand will return to CC one day as a replacement to the fading fast Jack FM. Maybe it’s easier to eventually just be 107-3Rock. Cox could do rock on 106.5 but would the results be that different? Would it even make sense?
At any rate, a lot of speculation on my part. It’s normal for all of us to make a pitch for favorite formats. For all we know, this could all be a lot of hype or even a stunt without much changing. But right now, I’m convinced a tightly-formatted Easy AC on a big stick makes total sense and hopefully I've made my case. There's a hole in the market. The format works best when it can be picked up inside buildings. "Lite" may call themselves that but when Jack FM plays a number of the same songs - that ain't lite! Trust me on this, the business community would welcome a real at work station. You know how I stand. We'll know soon enough if Cox Jacksonville agrees.
