Rock 104.5 is retiring

Very interesting reading. I do have in my files at home the application to move Atlantic Beach 104.9 to Fernandina Beach, can't recall the year it was filed. I will have to check and report back here.

There seems to be a number of valid choices for the next 104.5 format. I'll put my token down on WOKV-FM Newstalk, opening 106.5 for Power. Wouldn't blame them for putting power on the bigger stick... but that's what my gut tells me. Wider service area for WOKV at night... makes sense.

I agree. WOKV's FM signal is anemic indoors. Better FM penetration would be beneficial. AM 690 may get into those buildings, but signal interference from office machines makes the signal unlistenable.

I came over from WXSR Tally in the summer of 98 (I think) to may 2001. Good times. I kept begging for the bigger stick - 93.3 out of Callahan was brutal but we still pulled great numbers. Wonder why my post eliminated Guy Patton's on-air name Bean-er? Talented people worked there including Nicole Alvarez and Wil Morgan, who are now with the world famous KROQ.

X is definitely different sonically than FYV but I would think they share a lot of audience. FYV does not play currents, so why wouldn't people also cume X for newer material. I ditch when I hear Mumford and Sons/Imagine Dragons but stick if they are playing 3 Days Grace or Shinedown.

WXTB is #1 men 25-54 in Tampa. I still believe that a rock station can do well in Jax but you gotta play some new stuff...not a lot, but some...maybe Planet will come alive again.

Rick, When was your WPLA tenure?

Speaking of X-101.5 in Tallahassee. Its not the New Rock Station anymore. Its now Tallahassee's Rock Station since GULF 104 flip to AOR to classtic hits then Tallahassee's 106.1 flip to Oldies to Adult Rock then put X-101.5 where GULF 104 left off with older and new rock together.

I know that this station is going away, but has it leaned a little softer? I loved rock105, and like a year ago when it was rock104-5 it seemed too hard for me. Now that its going away it seems the newer stuff is softer than it used to be.
Go figure. I like the format now.

Yes, I quit listening to Tally's "X" for this very reason. It WAS a great alt station. I know it's a different company but I really hope X102.9 stays the way it is after 104.5 is gone. Mumford & Sons, Imagine Dragons, Passion Pit, Capital Cities, groups like that, to me, are the best part of it. The moldy GnR stuff & whatnot can stay on 94.1. X needs to stay new rock.

Is today the last day of Rock 104.5 right? April 28th 2013. Mumford&Sons and Imagine Dragons, Passion Pit, Capital Cities used to be on the AAA Rock charts. before they went to
Alternative side.

Alt music goes in cycles...don't worry, it will get loaded up with Sevenfold and heavier bands again in a year or two.

I think X has to be careful because a lot of the softer bands cross to pop and then.....it's on WAPE, a sister station. I never understood why (then) Kiss didn't just go Modern AC and ram their way into X and WAPE's world. Be alt light and stop playing the Kelly Clarkson, Lady Gaga, Pink, etc. Oh well. I'm just an old PD who knows nothing.

The station will flip around 10:30 or 11:00 PM tonight. I know I will be listening on the live stream starting around 7 or 8 tonight.

My guess on the format...well I have already mentioned a few, but will again:

- Urban Hip-Hop | Power 106.1 gets the bump up to become 104.5
- AC/Soft Oldies | Easy 104.5

Now of course I could see what someone else said...move WOKV over to 104.5...move Power to 106.5...leaving the 106.1 translator open to another format.

However, I think Cox is about to go after another station in the market and its Renda's WEJZ....things are too wide open on this one for Cox not to go after them, which is why I think we are going to have an Easy 104.5 pretty soon.

First songs to be played on 104.5; There is a connection:

"Take it Easy"-The Eagles
"Easy"- The Commodores
"Easy Lover"-Phil Collins & Phillip Bailey
"Easy to be Hard"-Three Dog Night
"It's so Easy"-Linda Ronstadt
"Slow and Easy"-Whitesnake
"Peaceful, Easy Feeling-The Eagles.

@Troy Goodwin: I am not sure to take that serious or not....

Been listening to Rock 105...yes I am calling it that as even Jake (who is LIVE in the studio) is calling it that for the last few hours in tribute to the station's retirement.

They are playing some good stuff right now and a good portion seems to be leaning older stuff right now.

I am likely to fire up the recording software around 10:00 pm to capture the last half hour to hour of Rock 105 and capture the format flip. This is a historical moment in Jacksonville radio history.

@ John Holcomb II: Yep! Are you listening on the live online stream or through the radio itself? I am listening through the online stream.

I would like for someone to accidentally spill the beans on the change, but Cox is pretty good of keeping stuff tight lipped until its time to hit the buttons for the change.

Unless its good DX< there's no OTA streaming for me from The Villages, so I'm listening via the web stream for now.
I'll try to DX it. Man, it sucks that half of jake is cut out due to the camersials starting before he is done talking.

That is the only part i am hating about it. I wonder if they are going to cut in and bring Skynyrd live on the station for the last hour or play Freebird as the last song for the station. Would be interesting either way.

what time might the last act be done in Rockville. Is that a pretty good clue as to when the station is gonna change formats??

11pm is the projection right now as that is the scheduled time for Welcome To Rockville to end. Lynyrd Skynyrd is the last act of the night and they are suppose to be up on stage around 10ish.

Just heard Jake say that once Lynyrd Skynyrd takes the stage the station will flip, which will be around 10pm....going to have to fire the software up an hour early I guess. Are you going to record this John Holcomb II?
