Rock 104.5 is retiring

I knew all along that a WOKV move to WFYV is where 104.5 was headed; however I was not at liberty to let on I knew the real plan although I did hint to the fact. This trend has proven to be highly successful for Cox Radio with WDBO-FM 96.5 Orlando and with WSBB-FM 95.5 Atlanta. With the gradual decline in the former Rock 104.5 ratings, and classic/mainstream rock in general, this is a brilliant move on Cox Radio Jacksonville's part since vast improvements were realized when WOKV-FM first appeared on the smaller 106.5 signal. With the bigger 100kw signal, Cox will realize even bigger success with an already proven news-talk formula heard for years on WOKV-AM 690 and WOKV-FM 106.5.

I guess I understand the move...sorta. It solidifies WOKV's position with a big signal & keeps any potential challengers away. On the other hand, I don't see Renda going into the format & Clear Channel's stab at FM news talk (Rush Radio as an example) is not setting the world on fire.

On the other hand, WOKV was probably billing well on the AM/FM combo they had. Pretty sure FYV was still pulling decent revenue. The bigger question is...will WOKV & X & the new format on 106.5 out bill what they were making. Anyone with access to a Miller Kaplan?

JMTillery - we average folks only see ratings available on radio info or all access. DBO FM has a 3 share, which doesn't seem all that impressive. What were their numbers when they were on AM only compared to FM? HTQ as a rock station was pulling a 3 share, right? Has their billing grown dramatically?

Guesses on 106.5? Why not go for more of V101.5's money - Urban AC. Star is killing in Orlando. Not sure the 1065 signal covers the areas it would need to. #2 choice - call me crazy...classic country.

Guesses on 690 (down the road)? I'd go oldies

A local program would be nice for afternoons. I guess Rush is still popular, but just the sound of his voice makes me cringe. Every day it's the same old same old. I love talk radio, but Rush is one of the few programs I avoid, which is tough because he seems to be on every frequency.

Is Geraldo heard anywhere in North Florida? I enjoy his show..fast paced, very news oriented and a lot of newsmakers and correspondents are featured.

Welcome to the world of being "Journey'ed™" (a new term, having a popular format flipped to a news/talk station - in tribute to what happened here on 100.7 last yr.)

Any chance that there will be a station to replace Rock 104.5/105 as an active rock station in North Florida over the Memorial day weekend?

I just learned about this the other day. Quite a bummer since 105 was one of the most consistent thing s I cold count on being there.. I move from Jax to Atl in 94. I spent summers in Jax from 85-86 and in 87 I moved down perm. I remember The morning Zoo..when they broadcasted from the RV...I remember Arf and Rose. (It's time for SPORTS). I remember when they added ZROCK to 1460am and all the years they gave away the 105 Vette.

Craziest part...whenI moved down. I was big into Metal but R105 didn't play any and it was torture for me because all I had as an option, besides tapes I madae from up north, was hearing almost every song from Zeppelin, Skynrd, Pink Floyd..the list goes on...and I realized about a year ago that I miss it. We don't even have a decent classic rock station in ATL, anymore. The best option In have going for me is sattelite radio, these days. M

but, Rock 105 will live on in my head...I actually still can hear the bumpers...and Rick Tracy's voice.
