Bob & Tom and John Boy & Billy (mostly southern markets) have their audiences. B&T are huge in Toledo on CC rock WIOT. They're flagship WFBQ/Indy still on top for the most part (WJJK-FM nipping at their heals).
In Raleigh (00-04) we had both shows at different times. In fact, B&T replaced JB&B on then rock WRDU. CC Corporate didn't want to lose JB&B to a competitor so they parked the show on my station, oldies WTRG. Had to blow out the live morning show. No choice. JB&B eventually eroded the females in AM drive. But.. WTRG was #1 Men 25-54 beating B&T on the rock station. Eventually we were able to drop JB&B for a VT'd AM show (Dave Mason from San Diego) and female numbers started to climb again. Each show did very well during their respective runs on WRDU. Each may be quite long in the tooth so to speak yet they both have decent affiliate numbers and must bring in the $$$ otherwise Premiere (CC) would cut them loose.
I recall WRDU's affiliate fee for Bob and Tom was approx $120k the first year. By year three B&T's numbers were declining (more due to lack of promotion by the PD) and the fee was reduced to $85k. A deal considering the talent on the show and what they provide. IMO a local show couldn't do the same for that money. Not with the production quality the show provides.
