Saga - Des Moines

Since this has been the Eastern Iowa Radio Board for a while, just wanted to throw in a Des Moines topic...

With Saga-owned Lazer 103 in Milwaukee flipping, and Star 102.5 not doing well in the ratings...does anyone see anything happening (changes, flip) at Saga in Des Moines? I know KIOA and Lite aren't going anywhere (except maybe adding much more late '70s to 93.3 as they have recently done). Also Lazer will probably remain due to not much new/hard rock competition in Des Moines. Would love to see 102.5 go back to at least CHR/Pop...not going to happen with this company, but it would be exciting...even switch back to Q102!?!? Many people in Des Moines over 24 y/o still call it Q102 to this day. KKDM/KissFM needs some competition.

Changes are in the works, and you're more clairvoyant then you'd probably believe. Prepare to be 'excited.'

Do you speak in terms of Lazer or STAR or both???

just curious....

Jammin Jimmy Wright at night might finally fit in with the station...

Jimmy should do mid-days!!

One more thought... Most stations have been known to flip over Labor Day weekend... that is just a week away... I smell something fishy in the saga building and it is not Karess Carter!!

Hmmmmm....

A Rhythmic CHR??? CHR?

I would think a more Jack/Bob type format might work better...

A CHR would be exciting though, to go up against KISS. I would think if anything they'll go with a mainstream CHR if they decide to go that route. However, a Jack/Bob format would still fit in with their current demo, and would be good competition for The BUS.

But...not everybody can be 25-54. It might finally be time DSM get two decent 18-34 CHR's.

I wonder if STAR is still billing as well as they were last year.

I can't see Lazer going anywhere.

One other thing.....

It's odd that this would happen...

I saw an article, and this was last year...but, that STAR was the top biller among music stations in DSM. Have they lost revenue due to KISS, The BUS and My100????

Surely Lazer wouldn't go anywhere. Ratings are decent and I don't think they're hurting for cash that much.

Maybe things aren't so rosy in the SAGA building. Maybe SAGA wants more agency money?????

Steve,
Wow, I thought it would be the end of the world before Saga put a pure CHR format back on 102.5. Will this be a pure CHR or will it be an adult CHR format like their Springfield, IL station and Q102/KRNQ was from '91-'93?

Re: One other thing.....

Something is coming in terms of a 'shooting star' in the market ;).

Not sure it it's simply a redirecting of the current station (adding a few titles, things of that nature), or a complete reimaging, repositioning and essentially 'starting over.'

I hear the billing "isn't bad", however I'm not sure my source is privvy that information. It certainly didn't sound like this plan was a secret in the building.

I have a reasonable ammount of trust in this source. I'd guess it's a 60/40 bet this is going to go down.

I guess they just want to plant a big, wet "KISS" on the metro area.

It sounds like, according to my source, a fair number of urban titles will be included, if that answers your question.

Re: One other thing.....

That's tough to say, it sounded imminent, but possibly a number of weeks. I'm not 100% positive the final decision has been made, but I know some very serious discussions (talent, etc) were being held.

Re: One other thing.....

It'll be nice having a good CHR war in DSM again. It's long overdue and this market is ready for it!!!

Re: One other thing.....

I agree! If they do it right, they should out-do Kiss. I talk to many people who get annoyed at KISS for various reasons, but they do not have much other choice on broadcast radio here.

Long overdue is right!!! DSM was without any CHR from at least 1991-1999 and only had one previous to that back to sometime in the 80s.

Re: One other thing.....

Agreed very much!!!!!!!!

However, I'm a real radio historian nut and I can't help but point out that in the 80's in addition to Q102, DSM also saw a couple other CHR's. X103 KXJX (now Lazer) was CHR prior to the ecclectic KFMG days. Also, 93.3 was known as Z93 (KDWZ) before becoming KIOA around 90 or so. Z93 existed for about 5-6 years, X103 was only around a couple years in the mid-80's. Q102 definately dominated the market.

Also, don't forget fringe CHR coverage from Ames by way of 107 KCCQ, later Hot 105 (now 105-1 channel Q).

Re: One other thing.....

I remember Z93 as a hard-rocker back in '90 & before. Don't remember X103 (due to my age)...but do remember KDMG (classic gold) and KFMG. I also remember 107KCCQ "Ames Hot FM" but 106.9 KJJC out of Osceola at the time would bleed on to it making it fairly unlistenable for me where I was at during that time.

Back to 102.5...it seems to me if they are going to do this they can't just add some urban tracks only and leave it as "Star"...they have for years played a cut of some hip-hop song and said "You don't have to sit through this to get to this..." then play Three Doors Down or something. That would make them seem hypocritical. As far as the timing, they have a huge contest involving bumper stickers "Put Star on Your Car" and a giveaway. This ends September 11. It seems to me they will wait on any changes at least until after this contest is over.

Re: One other thing.....

Thanks for refreshing me... :)
Z93 was hard rock before it went off, however, in the earlier days it was actually a pretty well programmed CHR.

Yes, JC-106.9, as it was called, was pretty bad at squeezing out KCCQ when it was on 107.1. KCCQ had 3000watts from a 390ft tower going up against a 27000watt station on a 650ft. tower. Pretty bad.

As far as the imaging, yeah, I agree, they can't just start a CHR playlist and keep calling it STAR. Besides, the 'STAR' moniker is a bit burnt out and old sounding today. Plus, too many would be confused hearing 50cent on a station that used to swear they'd never play it.

As far as the promotion thing, I would agree they'd probably at least wait until then, however, stations have flipped before regardless. Once the decision is made, they'll do it, because the old station is as good as dead, and everything associated with it. Unlikely though in this case.

Re: One other thing.....

Steve, not sure who your source is, but they are really jacking you around. Your percentages and what you know couldn't be further from the truth...

It was nice to see the board moving though.

Hmmmm...
The plot thickens.

Re: One other thing.....

But do you think that bringing back the Q moniker will work because you know that's what they are going to do....I really don't see them going Z something. I would bet on flipping labor day weekend....long weekends are always the friends of Radio station flips.

IF...and it's a big IF....they flip. What happens to the talent. Bobby? I'm not feeling it, I'll be honest....Karess....there's lots to feel and I don't see it. Then there is the "STAR" morning show and I don't see Ken and Colleen as the "New Q morning Zoo"...not wacky enough unless they can dig up cornell fowler to bring back Mr. Angry on Friday mornings. Oh yea, and they bring Mick T. Back!

Yo Yo....50 in the HOUUUUUSE!
