Sandy

9.4 feet storm surge predicted at this moment from Sandy at the Battery. Which AMs will stay up and which (like in the Jersey swamps) will go down? How about WCBS/WFAN?

Interesting thought. Will WCBS (Long Island Sound) and/or WINS (Jersey Swamp) go to FM for the duration?

If the storm warrants I can see CBS doing "group casting" with all their stations airing same programming.. using the pool of talent from AM and FM joined together [this happens usually in other areas that face hurricanes] the FMs drop music and provide information...

CBS FM 101.1 simulcasted 880 during Irene, and also aired the Giants game the day after. Fresh 102.7 simulcasted WINS. 92.3 Now simulcasted WCBS-TV.

The wind might be over 100 mph at the top of Empire, so there's a chance that all the FMs could go off the air except for 94.7.

101.9 should simulcast its sister station IQ 106.9. Clear Channel stations should simulcast TV stations, and air its customized New York news format on one station.

Only one slight problem with your suggestion...

Merlin Media no longer owns 101.9FM. Somehow, I doubt the stations new owners, CBS Radio, would contemplate that programming maneuver ;)

They own it till November 1. Simulcast IQ 106.9 till then. Then claim the hurricane blew WRXP away.

Not that 4 Times Square would fare any better in that regard, but there are a dozen or so FM aux facilities there. None for CBS properties (CBS has their aux just a block or two down Broadway at CBS's headquarters)

4TS is considerably more hardened than Empire, especially when it comes to backup power.

Some of CBS Radio's FM auxes are at 1515 Broadway (the HQ not of CBS but of quasi-sister company Viacom); 102.7 has its aux on one of the WINS towers out in Jersey. The Emmis stations (and former Emmis stations) have their auxes on the same tower in West Orange as 94.7. I believe 96.3's aux is still out there as well.

All of which is to say - the NYC FM dial will not fall silent if Empire were to lose power or (far less likely) suffer damage to its antennas. The stations with aux sites on 4TS will continue on with almost no difference in their analog coverage (nobody has an HD backup at 4TS, AFAIK). The most noticeable FM sign that Empire is off, unless you have an HD radio, would be the absence of WBAI, which has no auxiliary site.

TV would be rather more affected. I know of several DTV signals with aux facilities at 4TS, but there are more that don't have any licensed auxes.

I believe the backup for 96.3 is at 4TS now. They moved there from West Orange a while back. The new WFME antenna is now in the aperture vacated by 96.3.

Now I've heard Amtrak will be shut down all over the Northeast on Monday due to the storm surge. Also millions of kids have no school as of tomorrow, including NYC Public Schools, and 72 shelters have opened up in the Tri-State area.

Imagine the DX when WABC or WCBS gets shut down! Probably Cuba and a lot of low power stuff...

The license to cover for the new aux on 4TS was actually just filed less than a month ago, it should be good to go.

Yeah, the complexity of the tower site required combined with all of the co-channel and adjacent stations (any move to the northeast gets closer to 630 WPRO) is so restrictive... I really don't think you could make any kind of improvement that would mitigate the costs that a move like that would incur. You've gotta be talking close to 6 figures for the engineering alone.

Tropical Storm Sandy Coverage

WCBS and WINS as usual did a great job covering the storm. But Even KCBS of San Francisco Covered Sandy but in the form of Local effects in terms of East Coast Residents stuck at Bay Area Airports.

Listened to WCBS and WINS online earlier... seemed like a lot of repetition but I guess you can only say so much before the storm hits... Listening to Z100 right now (seems to be business as usual for Elvis Duran morning "pre show" including TMZ Sleaze and typical morning zoo bits...)

No, AMTRAK shuts down service because of the possibilities of trees and other debris on, and around, the tracks.

Jeff in Sa-ra-so-ta!

More news this morning-for the first time in 27 years, the NYSE has literally "shut down"-all trading is cancelled for today due to the evacuations. Same with NASDAQ.

Whenever WCBS gets the live stream going, I'll be watching!
