SBS Buys KROI for $7.5 million

Rant mode on: It is INEXCUSABLE to launch a new format or operation and not have technical issues ironed out. If you are not ready to go once handed the keys, sign off the transmitter, resolve your audio chain problems, test it out on air in the wee hours of the morning, then go from there. This reeks of poor planning. Rant mode off.
It makes no difference to anyone but a few of us on message boards.

None, but none at all, of the gospel listeners will stick around. And the new Hispanic listeners have not seen ads or promotion to tune in.

In the very Family centered Christmas season among Hispanics, the last thing that anyone cares about is a new radio station in a market with many in the same format range.

They have all next week to get everything in order. I'd expect that the "official" start date would be January first. If it were my decision, I'd do a mix show starting at 4 PM on the 31'st and run mixes all night. Then launch officially on the 1st

For sales, there is a certain "New Year - New Station" kind of presentation they can make to get attention during the least busy time of the year at media departments at ad agencies.

50,000 songs without breaks. About 70 to 100 days till something else goes on air.
I hate those weeks and months of non-stop music. As soon as the ads start running, listeners notice them even more and it turns negative.

When we launched Emmis's "Mega" in Buenos Aires, we did non-stop music for 30 minutes, and did a break every 30 minutes after that. What we did at the start was what everyone got always and forever, even up to today. Running ads from the start did not hurt ratings, and did not create a negative perspective about ads beyond what already existed.

They did have over a year and a half to plan for this.
They may not have had access to the seller's property, given the uncertainty of the deal all along.

In any case, it makes no difference to anyone since they did not want the old listeners and the new ones were not anxiously waiting around for a new station to be heard.

I was just thinking about this actually. How is launching with that many songs commercial free a good idea for this station? It doesn't cover the Houston area that well (like the Missouri City stations do), and they're competing against 3 regional Mexican stations. I feel like they'll just bleed money, but I don't really know how stations make these commercial free things work. 50,000 songs seems like a long time to go without that ad revenue.

I don't think it really matters right now if 92.1 doesn't sound great. Are the former Praise listeners annoyed by it? They're not at all the audience the new ownership intends to keep and they'll be tuning out no matter what's on 92.1.

As for the intended new audience? They haven't started listening yet, because there's been no marketing to tell them this exists for them yet.

I understand those arguments. But as someone who, during a long media career, took great pride in making sure everything I did was as technically clean as possible, I simply don’t understand why anyone would go with a half-baked on-air product.

I guess I’m just a cranky old retired media professional.🤪🤪🤣🤣

I’ll offer a counterpoint to the counterpoint: A company opens a grocery store. The produce is rotting, and the freezers don’t work properly so all the refrigerated/frozen food has gone bad.😵🤯 But hey, “it’s okay” because they haven’t publicized the store opening, so nobody knows about it anyway.🤢🤮🤣

The signal from the new tower is significantly better, and covers adequately the market's HDHA's where nearly all of the Spanish language listening is registered in the PPM.

New stations or totally different formats take months and months to build up real revenue. Sometimes "Pioneer Package" deals are made for cheap spots in the first months, and sometimes bonus spots from a sister station are used. In any case, the first months are usually total losses.

The issue, then, is whether to accustom listeners to some spots even if they are cheap ones, or to try to get extra listening with none at all. My view is that adding spots after a month or more of none is "chocante" and listeners react negatively.

Man. i guess i was right all long lol
a few points
1.No it wont be 70 days before Talents are on the air.
2.Raul is almost ready and will have most of his team back on the air very soon.
3. All of the talents will be local and some may come from competing stations.
4. KLTN should be concerned but they have been getting beat by small signals so really i think its Estrella that will feel the change sooner!
6. @IngenieroPerron talks about KLTN having great programming but the number shows otherwise they have a morning show that has gotten no traction in Houston and everything else is not the best quality per say in talent.
7. give this 3-5 months and i think we will see the station be in the top 5 in mornings.

Bryndis was far from "Top 5" before he was "left". Why would a burnt out show suddenly become Top 5 again?

Raul still not ready!
Top 5?
KLTN concerned?
😂 Made my day.

I've been listening for just over 20 minutes and the audio sounds good, though it did cut off towards the end of a song before coming back on right as the song was ending. Based on the small amount I've heard so far, seems norteño heavy with more emphasis on recent music than gold, and they seem to really like Grupo Frontera, as "un 100xto" was playing as I typed this, and the second song I heard was "POR QUE SERA".
Definitely a playlist tailored to Houston, and I could see KQQK losing listeners to them due to better signal if they do enough promotion.

It will be interesting to see how Raul does in his return, but as I said before, I'm skeptical of his success if he just comes back doing the same show he was doing during his final months at TelevisaUnivision. For the moment, I'd still say KLTN should be more worried about their own issues rather than KROI.

The thing about KLTN's programming is that it's made for the nation as a whole -and for that matter, the rest of Texas in mind. You can't do changes just to placate one market.

I’ve been sampling La Ley this evening and it appears the audio problems have been resolved, the station sounds good. Maybe someone at SBS reads this forum?🤣🤣 Still transmitting in HD, but no HD-2 yet, not that I expected La Privada to be added so soon…guessing it will be a few weeks.

I am still somewhat skeptical about the viability of SBS as a stand-alone operator in this market, especially with major consolidation looming. SBS seems like a company that is going to get swallowed up by a bigger group.

And in Mexico, Televisa and TV Azteca produce programming for the whole country... this is not as big a deal today as some seem to think.
