Selma has a NEW Country station!

The number 1 biller in Selma is WALX. Alexander takes more $ out of that market than all others combined - now that ConFuzion has pissed off the market. Make no mistake about it, in markets like Selma, personal relationships count! Mike Reynolds, attempt to distance himself from his home town market while trying to be a "big boy" in Montgomery, will not be forgiven so quickly. I believe this will go down as one of the biggest blunders in Alabama broadcasting history when all is said and done. Oh, and yes, a million and a half is the number floating around the market - not just for the transmitter site, but studios in Montgomery, sales staff in Montgomery, staffing, marketing, and other overhead. How long can a company run at a loss before they run out of reserves? I don't know. Only Mr. Mike can answer that.

That's great news indeed.

Hope they can keep it that way for years to come.

Kudos to WALX for the fine job they continue to do.

Keep up the good work Mr. Paul.

Want to learn from your fine example, as I continue to pursue my own LPFM broadcast for this city.

Hope to have something in the works real soon.

P.S. I'll say this about (Con)Fuzion, in closing.  I believe their moving to Montgomery was a big mistake.  Changing from Country to a Hodgepodge mix of music didn't help them either.  I look for Mr. Mike to soon drop the music altogether and go for a talk type of format.  What say you Mr. Gower?

So WDXX wasn't #1 when they were the Selma Country station? Or did they cede that title to WALX when they moved their focus to Montgomery?

I know of no other towns in the southeast with at least 5 radio stations where Country is on the weakest signal in town. Very unique situation.

Interesting thread.

There was a situation similar to the Mike Reynolds near Dawson Georgia some years back when an owner tried to play "big boy" in a major neighboring city and abandoned the hometown. The station is long gone but once was known as ""92 Ways" or some similar moniker. I remember Jay Braswell describing in great detail how the businesses said "you didn't need us then and we don't need you now." This looks like a re-run in the making.

Kix looks like a smart move from what I can tell of the market from afar.

I'm now having a flashback moment again.

Back in 2003, when WAQU upped their power and relocated to the farmland settings of Highway 80 west, they didn't give a rat's arse about the locals who was helping them stay on.  They basically did what Mr. Mike is currently doing to Selma.  AFR was a much needed radio station, at the time they came.  When they pulled out, it pissed off many people.  Myself included, since I was doing my speaking gig on there.  Glad that Moody Radio came to Selma and built a new radio station at 89.5 FM.  Those former displaced listeners found them a new home, for all things Christian Talk/Music, after it signed on.

Now that AFR has moved away, this station has lost its mojo.  Don't know of many people who listen to them.  I surf by there on occasion but to get a laugh on.  They had something special when they were in Selma.  Me. Mr. Dean Wilson, James Hamner and His Pal Mr. Richard Wilson were the lifeblood of that radio station.  We helped them stay on the air and had a loyal listener base.  Things have not been the same for them, since they left.

Fast forward to 2013.

I see Fuzion 100 going down this same road.  When you piss off your own hometown and try to become something you're not, bad things will happen.  And it will cause someone else to step in and take your former thunder away.  Hence the reason why we now have Kix 101.5 FM.

Now for an update to Kix 101.5 FM.

Taken from their Facebook page: The response has been incredible to our new sister station in Selma... KIX Country 101.5. If you have not checked it out yet, we invite you to tune in and let us know what you think. We believe in Selma and that's why we say "COUNTRY IS BACK". ALEX, JAM, and KIX are not going anywhere Selma! Please share with a friend!

I'm still rooting for them to have success.

P.S. To the doubters, I still see this station becoming a top biller. It's beginning to happen already.

How's the sound quality on Kix compared to the big 50kw Alex? I haven't been to Montgomery, Bham, or ATL since they lit up all the new music stations on translators but the ones I have heard didn't have that sound presence that grabs your attention (would that be referred to as good processing?). This is probably the main reason I have doubts about putting one of the top two southern formats on a 250 watt translator.

It's all a matter of what the owners are willing to spend… Birmingham's two urban formats on translators sound very competitive. Not as pristine as the dominant stations Cox runs but good for what Clear Channel puts out, generally. The rock is a little muddy, but then rock is kinda muddy to me anyway.

The stations in The Gump on translators sound every bit as good as the higher powered competition.

BTW, Kix has 180 likes on Facebook already. Not bad for a small town station, or so soon after debuting! I don't think Journey 100 ever got that in Pensacola, a much bigger market. Fuzion has 477 likes; Alex FM has 708. For perspective, WABD in Mobile has 32,000 likes. I bet Kix gets over 200 before the end of May.

If Facebook likes can be used to gauge the sucess of a radio stations then The Gump is doing very well! I see close to 6k likes for the Gump compared to only 4k likes for 92Zew in Mobile and 3k likes for 99 Rock in Fort Walton. I mention 99 Rock because the DJs are constantly referring listeners to the Facebook page.

As of this posting, Kix has 199 likes on Facebook.

That over 200 prediction will happen within a matter of time.

You may not have to wait long for it Mr. Zach.

As of this posting, they have over 200 likes.

The wait didn't last too long now did it, Mr. Zach? :)

I knew they would be hit right out the box.

Checked out the last five minutes of the Elkdale Service on Kix and it sounded real good.

Kudos for having a great sounding radio station and presentation.

Keep up the good work Mr. Paul and Company.

P.S. If my own LPFM dream works out, I may entertain the idea of broadcasting the 8:30 A.M. Service from Elkdale. It's something I want to do, as my way saying thanks for continuing to influence this 42 year old something, who wants to return to this business again.

B.T.W. Still excited for Kix and those associated with it.

The feedback we have received from the Selma community over the past week has been incredible. Our radio family is blessed to have such a supportive listener base for ALEX, JAM, and the brand new KIX. Thanks for your interest and comments about our latest project. We are always trying to deliver the best radio experience possible on the stations we operate.

Best,
Paul Alexander

My mind is already made up.

This LPFM set up will indeed carry a broadcast of the 8:30 A.M. Sunday service from Elkdale, if things work out for me.  I'll carry the service for free.  The payment for the airtime will come from the listeners of this radio station.

Also have plans of doing two more local Church services on here too.  My own and Crosspoint will be the other two.

Also have plans of allowing my friends Mr. George Birchler (Soon to be new associate Pastor at my home Church, once we merge with his Church), Mr. Earl Adams (Now an associate Pastor in the Jackson Mississippi area), Brother Rod Rodchester (A Local Pastor) and Brother Rob Moore (Owner of WRNF Moody South Selma) to do some Preaching programs for me, should they entertain an interest. (30 minute blocks for each person and once a week)

Want this radio station to be Selma's first and only all local Christian radio station.

Want the local Christian community to have a station they can call their very own.

Thanks for your continued influence on me.

I appreciate it.

With my own regards R.D.P. <>< (Dan)
