CKLG AM 1070 began in 1955 as a North Vancouver radio station operated by Lions Gate Broadcasting Ltd. In the final 30 years of CKLG AM 730 (ending on January 31st, 2001) the station most often identified on-air as "LG73."

That is too cool. The bridge is beautiful, especially in its modern lighting scheme at night.

Hard to believe it is almost 6000 ft long (tall towers are no greater in height than 2000 ft AGL) and only has one level and 3 lanes, owing to it's 1938 construction. No one anticipated that it would carry 60,000 - 70,000 vehicles per day in the 1930's. There probably wasn't even 60,000 vehicles in total in Vancouver or all of Canada in that year.

The more I listen to LG-73, I am increasingly convinced that there needs to be a US internet equivalent; my gut would make it "Music Radio 77", owing to my having grown up with 77 WABC, New York as the benchmark AM station, circa 1976.

For sure, other would argue for Music Radio 89 for WLS, Chicago, or Dallas locals perhaps 1190 for KLIF.

Whatever it turns out to be, I think there should be one US streaming station open to live jocks from across the country to celebrate and commemorate AM Music Radio in the US.

Reminder: There's an encore presentation of the show today, at 4:00 PM Central. Visit www.lg73.ca to listen.

Not to take away from Robert Bass but you should also check out DJ Specs show on Internet Radio LG73 (airs live Sundays 11pm Eastern) Specs was a part of the original LG73 AM 730 back in the day! There are also 'encores' during the week.

Most of the presenters on Lg73 Internet radio have some radio experience some have none ... though all would likely agree and feel that personality is the reason people tune into radio and that's one of the things LG73 internet radio tries to do is have some personality and not just be a voice tracked jukebox like sadly much of terrestrial radio has turned into today.

But yes! Robert's show is great! Even when he plays classics from Cassettes!

Yes, great advice. The more I come to know LG-73 from listening to RITH, the more intrigued I become with the station (and the concept) as a whole... the promo's during Rob's show are so interesting; the 'Evening Zoo' and the 'goat guy' that follows. Also the disco show too.

LG-73 is certainly personality driven and as such that is the attraction for me; I used to be a VIP member / listener to Live 365 and never found anything as interesting as LG-73 on that platform.
Live 365 fragments and cannibalizes itself by design. Too many choices / too much potential competition. Then again, it's all relative... the better, more professional stations stand out from the rest.

Thus my interest in creating a streaming US tribute / replica of Rick Sklar style American AM Music Radio, replete with live personalities from all over the nation and the globe.

New show reminder!

Saturday evening, March 23rd at 8:00 PM Central.

Robert:

I wanted to mention that I've never been able to catch (hear) the actual open of the show except on replay; I'm wondering how they connect you in as to "segueway" between segments? Is it a clean cut over or does it have some delay and truncation of your show open?

Also, could you tell us about the various streams available and software required to stream from the site? I've only been able to connect at 64kMP3-Pro, but never at the highest quality.

(LG-73 MP3-Pro does not sound on par with Live365 MP3-pro)

Hi JRZFM100,

LG73 has 3 live streams. The 64k mp3PRO stream you have been using requires an mp3PRO player for full quality. I only know of two that work: vintage WinAmp 2.x with the Coding Technologies mp3PRO plug-in and a player called JetAudio. All others will play the stream compromised with half the proper audio bandwidth.

These days you'll likely get better results with the other two streams. The main stream is 128k AAC and works great with iTunes or WinAmp 5.x. You can get to it easily in iTunes in the Radio section within the Top 40/Pop genre. The third stream is the very efficient 36k HE-AACv2 stream. That one also works great with the latest iTunes or WinAmp and various other players including the awesome StreamS HiFi Radio app for iOS. Best quality results are with players that use the genuine Fraunhofer/Dolby codecs like the aforementioned iTunes and WinAmp. Open source codec based players like VLC will still do a decent job decoding the streams but with slightly lower quality.

Robert sends a live source feed to a private server which is then played live to air using iTunes. Transitions to and from live shows are handled by my own custom AppleScripts. All non-live programming including encores of live shows is handled by an app called Radiologik DJ and scheduled with Radiologik Scheduler.

Audio processing happens inside an app called Audio Hijack Pro using T-RackS CS Grand by IK Multimedia. Stream encoding is with Winamp/Shoutcast DSP for the AAC and HE-AACv2 streams and SimpleCast 2.5.3 (from the same developer as the well-known SAM app) for the mp3PRO stream. The aforementioned Windows apps are all running in CrossOver for Mac which runs Windows apps without Windows.

The whole works is self-contained within a solitary Mac Mini Server except for the streaming servers.

Live presenters on LG73 provide some filler music at the start and end of each show to account for variable stream delays etc. and the archiving system. Speaking of the latter, it captures the original source feed stream without any re-encoding so the encore shows have the same quality audio as the original live broadcasts.

The reason you missed the opening of a couple of the live shows is because I did a major system software upgrade on the LG73 Mini Server and some unexpected changes in the behaviour of QuickTime Player broke my AppleScript apps. This has been resolved by switching back to iTunes for playout of the live feeds and a previous generation of my Applescript code.

Apologies for any inconvenience that may have caused. I make every effort to insure the entire content of Robert's excellent show is heard both on the live and encore broadcasts.

LG73-

Thanks for your very detailed explanations. I am a huge fan of MP3Pro with Live365 using their propitiatory Live 365 decoder; it's no wonder I'm never satisfied with LG73 MP3Pro - I don't have any way to decode this properly.

I'll go grab a current version of Winamp and try the non-MP3Pro audio tonite!

One mystery remains outstanding, Robert's voice seems to have reverb. Is this by intent, or an artifact of my being unable to properly decode the MP3Pro?

Thank you much!

Outstanding response from Phil! I'd like to thank him for taking time out of his rather busy schedule, to answer those questions.

JRZ, I believe a hint of reverb is included in the audio processing used at LG73's end of things. However, I should also point out that my studio where I originate the show is not soundproofed. So it's very likely my mic (Shure SM7B) is picking up echo off the walls. I would like to have soundproofing installed some day, when my budget allows. For the record, I do very little audio processing on the private feed to LG's headquarters. I do have very light AGC in the audio feed, but that's primarily to protect the audio levels off of the mixer from overloading my PC's sound card input. Phil prefers no audio processing from all show hosts, so that's what I provide to him.

OMG... like the Eagle has landed. Listening to RITH on LG-73 with the proper decoder is really quite amazing.

Using 128k HD Stereo stream with WinAmp tonite. It is crystal clear. And yes, there appears to be light reverb on the whole (chain) stream. It's not the ambient component of your room.

Didn't know it could sound this good! LG-73 Rockin' at the Speed of Light

RITH cool show highlights from Sat March 23rd, 2013----

From a lyrical paradigm:

"It came from a street so evil even hell disowned it": TORTURE from Jacksons' Victory cica '84

"What ever you do, don't put the blame on you": BLAME IT ON THE RAIN MV

"Need you by my side, girl to be my bride, you'll never be denied": EVERLASTING LOVE - Carl Carlton

ALL I WANT TO DO... -Heart [weirdly, always reminds me of a stretch of hwy at mile marker 319 on Interstate 20 Eastbound near a place called Putnam, Texas.]

"Do do do do da do do do": I CAN'T WAIT -New Shoes (which I always associate with Tender Love by the Force MD's- a co-charting CHR hit from early 1986)

NEVER ENDING STORY - Limahl (from Kagagoogoo) - played that alot at I-100 Daytona Beach, FL, Summer 1985.

WHO'S JOHNNY - El Debarge (the song that was so improbably voted #1 by listeners in the Jersey Shore Hot Five at Ten countdown {at WKRZ circa 1986} so many times you'd think it was my favorite!)

Robert pulls off this fantastic jingle with perfect timing; Who's Johnny ends cold, Bass puts the jingle thru the uprights with precision into..

STAYING ALIVE -Bee Gee's (song if fresh in my mind from seeing the remastered re-release of Saturday Night Fever a few weeks ago; and from the end of Staying Alive, the SNF sequel, sort of)

"There's nothin' to it just say you wanna do it, Open up your heart and let the lovin' start": ROCK YOUR BABY -Andy Kim

and it wouldn't be complete without this quote (approximately) from the Bass Master:

"it's radio... you can't see me... THANK THE LORD" - Robert Bass

What about my sign off statement? "I'm looking for a hot mermaid to crank the Bass! Carpeting MUST match the drapes!"

Hi JRZFM100,

You should get an award as the listener with the golden ears! Yes, there is a small touch of reverb added at the start of the processing chain. This is an old trick many Top 40 AM stations employed to get a slightly larger than life sound. 730 CKLG (the original LG73) occasionally did that trick so I'm partly doing it as an homage to the original station. I've also listened carefully with it on and then bypassed and overall the station sounds slightly better with it on.

Glad you enjoyed the 128k AAC stream!

Yea, I can never get those 3 Rockin' songs straight; those three songs all occupy the same thought sector in the little hard drive of my mind and I get em confused-

---

ONE: Rock the Boat ->by the Hues Corporation
(No, they don't own satellites, that's the Hughes Corporation)

TWO: Rock Me Gently ->actually by Andy Kim

THREE: Rock Your Baby ->correctly so by George McCrae

I suppose that #4 would be Rock 'N Me, but the Steve Miller song is from a similar era, but a completely different genre of music (rock).

---

What about my sign off statement? "I'm looking for a hot mermaid to crank the Bass! Carpeting MUST match the drapes!"

I'm as risky as they come here on the boards as you know, last nite I even told ya the '319 Mile Marker' story, but I'm not gonna touch that one... it's way cool and speaks for itself, I think.

In fact, Z-100-FM in New York had a Yamaha reverb in the chain, and thus not just on the mics, but on the whole air product circa mid 1980's, to get the same larger than life effect. Most noticeable with Scott and Ross during dry breaks on the Z-Morning Zoo. See, FM can be just like AM!

Unlike LG-73 2013, Z-100 didn't have any goats left wandering around after the Zoo in the mid day.

Show-to-show transitions were very tight last nite. The switcher works well now.

LOL! This mermaid stuff has been a long-running joke in the LG73Max chat lounge. :)

There's also the "closed mall" joke. I'll have to mention that one on the next show.
