Celeste Perry? Better than Sue Hall....but as someone stated earlier...whoopee. If their Billy Joel/Fleetwood Mac music marathon they have going is any indication, this will be one boring station.

First of all, the music being played is not the final playlist, from what I understand. It's still being tweaked and evaluated.

Second, it ain't all Fleetwood Mac and Billy Joel. If it was, the Billy Joel alone would cause me to upchuck. (Want to hear about my two years in exile on Long Island, with its four-Billy-Joel-songs-an-hour content rule, regardless of the station's format? Don't get me started...)

Today, in just a short listen, I heard "Shame" by Evelyn "Champagne" King *and* "Whole Lotta Love" by Led Zeppelin.

And "Get Back" by The Beatles.

And "Stayin' Alive" by The Bee Gees.

And "Jungle Love" by Steve Miller.

And "September" by Earth, Wind & Fire.

They are mixing it up. The playlist sounds like its heading more in the direction of "Classic 1970s KFRC" rather than simply "Classic Hits," and I think that's a good thing.

(And now, back to sending Mike Preston and Tim Jordan mindwaves to hire John Mack Flanagan and Don Sainte-Johnn... oooooooommmmmmmmm...)

DJ

That statement was with a ^;^ (twinkle) in that I had the station on yesterday on my way home from the south bay and it just seemed to be the same thing I could hear on K-Fox...I guess I want a surprise...a song that makes me say....WOW!

It sounds good to me radiostar , they could put the A's on the am side so they could free-up the fm just for music. The only trouble I see is that if the wind isn't blow'in the right direction it's hard to pick up 1550 down here in the south (San Jose)

Your comment makes no sense at all. What K-Fox are you talking about?

If you are talking about 98.5 K-FOX (KUFX) in San Jose, they have NEVER played "September" by Earth, Wind & Fire. They have NEVER played "Shame" by Evelyn 'Champagne' King. They have NEVER played "Staying Alive" by The Bee Gees.

How can you possibly make that statement?

> I guess I want a surprise...a song that makes me say....WOW!

Such as ... what?

The new KFRC plays classic hits, and they've thrown in some surprises. "Whole Lotta Love" on a retro-Top 40 station at nine in the morning? How is that NOT a surprise?

If you find it boring, go listen to something else. Fire up the Ipod. Burn yourself a mix CD.

Did you mean "put the A's only on the am side"? They already are on 1550.

Either way, it ain't going to happen. It's a package deal, and the A's specifically wanted 106.9 so that they would have FM coverage.

You also should realize that baseball is only going to run through October on 106.9, if the A's are lucky. After that, it's wide open music through the late Fall, Winter and early Spring.

And who knows -- the music could end up on the 106.9 secondary HD channel during A's games, and it could move fulltime to 1550 at some point, too. I know that'll be a huge disappointment for Carolla and Leykis fans, but it would mean two things: the return of the KFRC call letters to the AM side, and Top 40 music back on 1550, which was once the dial spot for KOBY, the Bay Area's first-ever Top 40 station back fifty years ago.

You can currently continue listening to the music on the stream when the baseball game is on the radio.

Dude...I was making reference to MY statement of what I HEARD on the station, not what you experienced. I didn't hear Shame or EWF. What I heard was nothing earth-shaking. Get a grip!
Why are people on this board so interested in having a pissing contest and make snap responss without READING what the person actually wrote.

This is a board, I thought, where people could post an opinion. READ: Opinion.

If my opinion, which was not offensive, impacts your daily life I aologize.

Dude ... you didn't back your opinion up with facts or examples. You said that "it just seemed to be the same thing I could hear on K-Fox," and the facts show otherwise. These are two completely different radio stations.

The new KFRC has elements of 98.1 Kiss FM, and The Bone, and the old 610/KFRC. It even has elements of the last iteration of 99.7 KFRC, but it is decidedly more up-tempo. But it is NOT a Classic Rock station, or an Old School R&B station, or an Oldies station. Knowing a few (and just a few) things that are happening behind the scenes, I'd give it a few more weeks before passing judgement.

No offense taken, and I graciously accept your aology. ;D

Any other Jocks on deck yet other then the Duke? Any word if John Mack Flanagan is working into a full time or Part time slot?

Celeste Perry is one smokin' jock. She can cook on the radio. She will make JoJo Kinkaid sound like he's on 33 1/3. You wait and see.

KFRC will sound just like it did in the 70's SMOKIN' Top 40

Even in Buffalo (where it's NOT snowing) people are interested in KFRC, its eventual on air line-up and what direction the station will take as it evolves. But the addition of major league A's baseball, with varied day and night games, double headers and rain-outs and re-scheduled games won't be an asset to KFRC, no matter how it's positioned. Baseball and music formats, especially on FM and the re-launch of a classic format like KFRC, is a drawback. October can't come soon enough, I suspect.

You are right about the A's on KFRC. It is too bad they have this long term contract that forces them to carry out the season. In fact, this is only year one of a contract that was signed through 2009. I don't know if CBS will be getting out of the deal or not.

Here is the info from an October press releas from the A's website:

106.9 FREE FM (KIFR) to serve as A's flagship radio station
Three-year agreement runs through 2009 season

OAKLAND -- The Oakland Athletics and 106.9 FREE FM (KIFR) have agreed to terms on a three-year contract for the San Francisco-based, CBS-owned station to serve as the club's FM radio flagship through the 2009 season.
106.9 FREE FM will broadcast all 162 regular-season and all postseason games involving the Athletics, plus 15 Spring Training games. The 80,000-watt FM station's signal clearly reaches all nine Bay Area counties.

KYCY 1550 AM also will carry all A's games, making the A's the third team in Major League Baseball to utilize stations on both the FM and AM bands, following the Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals.

"The addition of 106.9 FREE FM as a radio broadcast partner of the Oakland A's will provide our fans throughout the Bay Area with a clear and consistent signal in which to listen to our games," said Ken Pries, A's vice president of broadcasting and communications. "We are pleased to have a presence on both bands."

106.9 FREE FM VP/General Manager Steve DiNardo commented "There are a lot of ingredients you can put together to win in radio ... the A's are at the top of that list. 106.9 FREE FM is very excited to add the Bay Area's most successful baseball team to our already talented lineup. We look forward to providing A's fans throughout the Bay Area with winning coverage of their favorite team."

KIFR-FM is owned and operated by CBS RADIO, one of the largest major-market radio operators in the United States. A division of CBS Corporation, CBS RADIO operates 179 radio stations, the majority of which are in the nation's top 50 markets. CBS RADIO also owns and operates owns KLLC-FM (Alice @ 97.3), KCBS-AM, KFRC-FM, KITS (Live 105), KYCY-AM (KYOU Radio), KPIX-TV and KBHK-TV in the Bay Area.

The Athletics radio broadcast team consists of play-by-play announcers Ken Korach and Vince Cotroneo, with the addition of Ray Fosse, who will serve as an analyst for non-televised games. Robert Buan also returns for his eighth season hosting the team's "Extra Innings" post-game talk show.

I'm sure that is why they chose to start Sholin on 7/9 Duing the allstar break. The play by play is Ok, KSFO/KYA-FM were
an oldies simulcast with the A's on the AM band only. The AM always did better than the FM, and that relationship lasted for 6-7 years, However when the post game show was over, (about 20 min) so was the Broadcast, NOW they do a 2 hour talk show after the Game...Great when it was Free FM, since it was a talk station. Not so good Now. I think a ballgame+Talk Pre and Post is about 6-7 hours. That can screw with your music audience, and I can't help but notice that K-101 is adding a lot of 70's and 80's oldies to there mix. So I'm sure they will be happy to recieve the Classic Hits listeners who want music.

The A's should buy KTRB, and put their team on their own station. The A's actually helped Free FM show up in the ARB
the las couple of trends. More than the ;) superb talk programing did.

But Star 101.3 (they haven't been K-101 in years) runs John Tesh in the time slot you're refering to, so that kills that part of the argument. They may be adding a lot of '70s and '80s music to their playlist, but Star is still overwhelmingly more of a pure Adult Contemporary station in every way. Their music mix isn't close to what KFRC is playing.

> The A's should buy KTRB, and put their team on their own station.

Why? Then they'd have to figure out what to program the other 18 hours each day when the A's aren't on, plus 24/7 during the other six months of the year when there's no baseball. Could they add the Warriors? (No, KNBR has them wrapped up.) 49ers? (No, KNBR, has them wrapped up, too.) How about the Raiders and Sharks? (Well, maybe.)

I think the A's and CBS are both fairly happy with the current arrangement, and they'll settle in comfortably over the next few years. Heck, CBS may even finally get approval on improving KYCY/1550's signal...

Celeste is an awesome jock. It has been 8 and a half years since she has been on air full time. I hope she still has her chops....cuz she could be great!

So Celeste starts on Thursday and rumor has it on Monday the 23rd Jay Coffey (ex-KBSG, KRTH 101) and Bay Area native begins in Afternoon Drive. Too bad Bill Lee was tapped to do Afternoons at WCBS or it would have been a battle of the cookers! I'm sure Jay will do just fine though.
