Sholin, New KFRC Air Team To Debut...

Hmm, don't remember Big Ron O'Brien on KFRC, but I'm pretty sure he worked for RKO in New York, could be wrong.

JMF would be great to have back, but I'm guessing that the recent crap he put up with has him re-thinking the radio thing. Too bad, because he's a great human and a killer jock!

Other thoughts about people mentioned in this thread... Jhani Kaye has had luck with KRTH in LA, but I truly believe that many PD's could've changed the music and brought the numbers up. The KRTH line-up is super with a few exceptions(1-4pm), but I won't go into that now. As for Kaye's predecessor, Jay Coffey was a terrible PD and I thought that he was totally wrong to say what he said about Mike Phillips, a man whose record speaks for itself. LK's comment about Jay as a jock has me thinking that he'd hate to hear me on the air. I always thought that while Coffey was a horrible PD he was a consistent jock with good energy and content. Guess that gets blotted out by his personality off the air. If he's bland, I'm triple bland, but none the less, I've always wanted to work on KFRC and if I didn't have a great job now I'd be sending airchecks to SF to try and get a job there. I did visit a few times when an old friend was working at the Big 610 and will never forget the aura that 415 Bush Street had.

The people involved with the resurrection of KFRC all seem to have experience with the older incarnation, so they should have a good handle on what needs to be done. I hope they succeed.

Ok help me out here. I remember KFRC around 1974, 75 and this was the line up?

Dr. Don Rose
John Mac Flanagan
Bobby Ocean
Chuck Buell
Marvelous Mark
Tom Kennedy
Big Ron Obrien over nights

Where's Dave Sholan

My guess, BTW the new crew is making about the same money as they did in 1974 except Dr. Don of course.

The 1974-1975 lineup:

6-9AM: Dr. Don Rose
9AM-12Noon: John Mack Flanagan
12Noon-3PM: Bobby Ocean (replaced by Rick Shaw in May, 1975)
3PM-6PM: Chuck Buell
6PM-10PM: Marvelous Mark McKay
10PM-2AM: Tom Kennedy (replaced by Don Sainte-Johnn sometime in this period)
2AM-6AM: Ed O'Brien (replaced by Shana in September, 1974)

Sholin arrived at KFRC from KLIV, San Jose in 1974, was Music Director and did weekends and fill-ins.

I grew up listening to KFRC. Great station and a lot of great and talented people worked there over the years. Why then can't they locate some of these individuals that may have some name-recognition and bring them back as something of a homecoming? Dave Sholin, OK. But Celeste Perry I don't understand. I am guessing they couldn't get Sue Hall....though that is alright.

Does anyone know what a DJ in SF makes these days? Maybe it is just a budget thing and poeple living somewhere else don't want to come back where they can't afford a house.

I suppose if a DJ is making $250,000 a year it would be worth it to move back in this area, as that is what you need to make these days to buy a home in the Bay Area that is comparable somewhere else in the country. Is the $250k figure realistic? Forgive my ignorance....I work in a field where inflated incomes are not uncommon.

More like between 100 - 200 depending on the day part. Nights makes significantly less. Oh, and we are talking KFRC money, NOT other stations. It depends on the company, on the station, on the ratings. A lot of factors go into determining Salaries. One Midday jock might make about 50K in the bay area and another makes 150K.

Well as a member of a Large Labor Organization that has a vested interest in what Radio Folks earn I wish your numbers were accurate...I would think morning guys do OK, a lot of it based on ratings and income generated by their shows, but the Average DJ would be more in the 65-100 range for the rest of them. I think 70 would be about right for someone with a name, BUT not on in mornings. In the case of CBS/KFRC They most likely have Sholin on a multi year deal in the 6 figures, he deserve that, He is their Big Name. The rest would be in that 65-70 range. Unfortunatly Saleries have be one of the biggest victms of consolidation. When you control 7-8 stations per market, You can pay what you want since you control the job supply. As a 36 year professional I would have to say that's why several great names have just walked away. There are reporters at KCBS that are making more than some of the Airstaff at KFRC. Same company one a Union station, one Not.

After all the money spent on Free FM, I would guess that CBS has told the KFRC folks...Watch your Costs...Cause our stockholdes are watching ours.

Not to sound too naive, but how can someone be expected to live here on that? And why would anyone want to move here from somewhere else for that small of a paycheck? $65k is what a 23-year-old fresh graduate can expect to earn in Silicon Valley in his/her first job. I also don't imagine there is too much job security. There must be some incredible perks to attract people he for those wages.

Big Ron O'Brien was on 64 KFI Los Angeles (RKO). At that time they were pretty much a sister station of The BIG 610 KFRC.

Correction. KHJ was KFRC's LA RKO sister. KFI was the competition....owned by Cox...which eventually chased KHJ out of the Top 40 format. Big Ron was there from 1979 to 1982, when he went to KIIS-FM. As I noted a few posts back, Rick Mundy was thinking of Ed O'Brien, who did overnights at KFRC in '74.

"Paula Kelly has a great radio voice, much more soothing and listenable for hours, un like Cammy, Paula is what I would much rather listen to for a four hour show! Paula Kelly must have done quite well she was on KYA 1260 the nite KYA closed up in 1983, and was always on till Movin came into play!!

OK - Paula does have a nice voice. Actually - I can't believe I'm saying this because nobody on this board (except maybe Kenny) has criticized Cammy Blackstone more than me...but the odd thing was, when she spoke softly in a low range, like when she was doing pre-recorded commercials, she actually had a perfectly nice voice. But for some strange reason, when she was doing her "comedy" bantering with her male partner, she preferred using a high pitched nasal voice. Ron Parker was kind of nasal too, and when they were doing their sarcastic banter back and forth "Ohh Raaaahhnnn" "Now just wait, Caaaaahmmy" , it made the hair stand up on my neck. It was the radio version of fingernails on a blackboard. There seems to be no room at the new KFRC for Cammy, thank God.

Lots of interesting postings on this thread - thanks everybody.

Cammy called in to Gary Radnich's show (which is quickly becoming the "destination" radio show in the Bay Area) on Tuesday morning and was very delightful. She talked about her role on the Giants' broadcasts on FSN (soon to become Comcast Sports Bay Area) and, overall, was simply terrific.

I think that was the first time I heard her on KNBR since she was Frank & Mike's traffic reporter back in the day...

Sal Castaneda (ex-Live 105, current KTVU) also called in during the same episode of Uncle Gary's show, and was dubbed the Dean of Bay Area Traffic Reporters by G-Rad. Sal, who was very funny, also showed why he's wasted doing "just traffic" on TV -- although he does a fine job of reporting news stories when he's given the chance on Channel 2's nightly news 'casts. He'd be an outstanding feature reporter, a la Mike Sugerman on KCBS.

I'm not sure what any of this has to do with anything else we were discussing, so you may feel free to stare at me blankly for a moment before moving on to the next post...

Congratulations, DJ. You've done what no other human being has yet accomplished - used the words "Cammy," "delightful," and "terrific" in the same paragraph.

Have you recently started using serotonin re-uptake inhibitors? ;D

Celeste Perry can't touch Sue Hall! If they are going to VT this format could they please get their volume levels set right. At least Sue Hall sounded like she was alive and "She had personality" and you could hear it everytime she cracked the mic! Celeste sounds like she is a scared rabbit! Is KFRC is trying to be as bland as KOIT!

Now a question for all you pro's out there: How many stations will it take to knock KOIT off its pedestal and be reduced to rubble in the bay area radio landscape?

KFRC Today sounds like The Ron Bailey School of Broadcasting. Trying to teach their jocks to be Top 40 energy Boss Jocks.

Good Luck

Its her first day. Give her some slack. She does need to put some energy into her delivery. She has the pipes, but she needs the pizazz to go with it.

Lets take it easy on the Celeste Blasting already, it was Day #1 getting use to a new studio, mics, board, etc give her a chance its been awhile since she's been doing an upbeat air-shift as Im sure her KKSF stint was pretty low key.

Keep in mind she just got back from vacation and came to work, she could have told Tim to hold off til Monday and she could have did some all-night weekend sound checks to get comfortable with the studio and board.

In the old KFRC days many of the new jocks would come in between 3am and 4am to practice with the board, mics, sound prior to handling there own shift.

As much as I love Sue Hall, Sue's been working pretty study for over 25 years but her 1st KFRC on-air gig did have sound issues as she was learning her mic, sound levels.

Celeste sounded great for Day #1 and will be a great asset to the 106.9 KFRC

Oh, and Celeste, Dave and Steve aren't voice tracked. Only Preston.

In this age of no rehearsal (in the middle of the night or a duplicate studio set up exactly the same), it's nuts to judge a first or second show for anyone. It takes time to get used to the equipment. Celeste is a pro, she'll get into it. Bear in mind she has just come off live/tracked KKSF, which is a very laid back delivery, and it takes some time to get in the groove with the more energetic music.

I didn't listen to the Duke until this morning for that reason (no rehearsal.) Dave sounded good...good morning service, bright, and dry wit. Unless someone truly terrible ends up sidekicking (Cammy), I predict this incarnation of KFRC will be a success.

Celeste Perry sounds great!! Im thrilled that Sue Hall is at the WOLF!!! What isn't happening? Celeste Perry going to Hollywood or JMF getting a permanent afternoon slot on KFRC?

How about some FUNNY on the morning show? I did not grow up listening to the station, but what was the old morning show like? Add a comedian to the mix and it will be great!
