Should Radio One dump Z-93?

I was looking at the Fall ratings the other day and noticed that WGTZ/Z-93 did a 2.4 in the fall book. Should Radio One dump 'GTZ's Top 40 format and go with something else? With the power of that signal, it shouldn't be doing a little over a 2 share. This is a station that did a 13 share in 1989-90. My how this station has fallen... :'(

Word around the campfire is that both WGTZ and WKSW are for sale.

Since Clear Channel & Cox's station allottments are capped in Dayton, it would mean another company would have to come into town to take over the stations or CC/Cox would have to spin off a property or two to accomodate.

I somehow can't see Radio One hanging on to WDHT as a standalone, I'd have to think they'd bail out of Dayton altogether and someone would buy all four...or at least the three that cover the market.

They would have WROU still left in the shuffle. Then again, there are a few formats in Dayton that cater mainly to African Americans that Radio One doesn't cover, but are covered by other stations (smooth jazz, urban oldies, urban talk, and urban Gospel). They could flip 92.9 and 1410 to one of those formats if there's enough of an audience to support those formats. The only station in the fold that doesn't fit is 101.7. I'm surprised Radio One hasn't spun that station off after all these years.

Not like the other Top 40 in town is bringing in much better numbers 12+. So maybe that's the justification for Channel945, to keep WGTZ from becoming a 4-5 share station. And that's just a 6kW signal keeping up with a much bigger dog.
Let's not forget that 12+ shows very little, and that WGTZ is showing larger numbers in key demographics, as is every station in the country. A top 40 that shows numbers with men over 54 isn't a very good one, for example.
But on the original point, they don't need to sell it. But they could use an update. The morning show sounds old and miserable, nothing happens in the afternoon, and the night guy is a geek. Update the logo so it doesn't look like something that was drawn by hand, have a better web presence, and get on the airstaff to perk up and entertain instead of just filling the time.

and what about the 2 signals in Dayton that CC is reportedly going to have to dump? If 94.5 is one of them, Z93 would benefit from being the only Top 40/CHR in the market (which is what they were when they had the hugh shares) That's a great senerio unless someone else comes in and keeps the format....like maybe Cumulus....hmmm food for thought.

From what I understand, WDKF has no pd right now. One of their guys is telling people that he's in charge now, but nobody is really in charge from what I hear. So maybe that station still has a chance with some decent leadership. If that's the case, then maybe Radio One will need to dump Z93.

I guess you'd have pretty good northern coverage simulcasting 101.7 and 106.5, but for a commercial combo you're going to be trying to sell both Springfield and the Greeneville area, and that might not bge the easiest thing to do. Somehow I'd look for a selloff to EMF or a similar Christian group for 101.7. Not sure about 106.5 or 94.5.

Cox is proposing a downgrade and move of 95.7 from Class B at Piqua to Class A at Sharonville.

Assuming the move goes through, they might consider picking up 106.5 or 101.7 as a replacement FM sister for WHIO. Since the proposed move would take the station to the Cincinnati market, they'd have cap room to replace it with another FM.

There'd be some angry rednecks in Clark county if Kiss Country went K LOVE. ;D

Not necessarily. Doesn't Cox also own the newspaper in Dayton? I seem to remember they had a lot of trouble getting 95.7/95.3 for that reason. However, there has been a rumor that Cox wants WDJX in Louisville. I also heard they were working with Cumulus to get the remaining potential Radio One spinoffs accounted for there. Of course, that's a rumor, and it's been awhile since I heard it. So, take it for what it's worth.

Yes, Cox owns the "Dayton Daily News" in Dayton and the "Springfield News-Sun" in Springfield.

Gr8, isn't it time to admit you believe you will financially benefit if Kiss Country goes away, so you're posting your wishful thinking rather than anything that makes sense?

i agree with everything you said... i've been thinking these things for awhile now. If they would just put some invest into this station it would easily beat 945 because it still gets higher numbers than them.

Every book 945 gets better and better numbers. If Z doesn't flip by the time the next book comes out there's a good chance Z may just get beat. 945 sounds A LOT better. Z also has improved though. Their crossfading has gotten much better. So yes, Radio One does need to drop them ASAP.

Looks like he may get his wish. WKSW files app to move to 101.5 at Enon, with coverage into the Dayton metro.

No matter how much they work with it, Scott Studios can't do what NexGen can do in crossfading. It sounds so geeky, but today I heard WDKF crossfade a promo over a song for about 15 seconds. It hit the post, and just sounded like one constant flow, the way a radio station should sound. The morning show is way funnier (though somewhat offensive and youger) than Z93's, the afternoon show is young and moving unlike Scott Sharp, and the night show is in and out rather than dwelling on some stupid horn game. For radio geeks like us, it's a better show around the clock. It's Z93's battle to lose if they don't fix their lazy programming before the listeners notice. They have the edge. Just get off your ass and do something.

YOU ARE RIGHT! When will Z notice that?
