Should Radio One dump Z-93?

If only alans613 owned Z.... :)

I agree with you very much. The problem is that Z is owned by Radio One.. and as long as Radio One is involved, Z will continue to suffer.

Radio One doesn't give a damn about the heritage of Z-93 or where it should be in the Dayton market...That huge signal should never be below Top 5 12+. All Radio One cares about is 102.9 and 92.1, and that's all they've ever cared about(That and sending Ronita Saunders and the old U-92 to bankruptcy court so they could own Dayton's Urban radio market). They could care less about the non-urban-leaning stations...

I don't think it has to do anything with urban and non-urbans. I believe that Radio One doesn't care about their stations in the smaller non-top 50 markets. WROU-92.1 sounds horrible since Radio One has taken over that station and 102.9 is just as bad. Here in Louisville, both CHR WDJX and Urban WGZB are not nearly as good as they were before the Radio One ownership and Alternative WLRS is absolutely pathetic.

I'm suprised they didn't put Rhythmic on Z's monster signal and dump Z's format altogether, and put Gospel on 102.9, (much like Power 107.5 in Columbus and Joy 106.3) but it's not like I want to give Radio One any ideas. ;D

The Power 107.5 and Joy 106.3 format were in place well before Radio One took over those outlets in Columbus. With six stations in Louisville, they haven't placed a Gospel format on any of those frequencies.

If I were running Z, I would position it as more of a Hot AC-type station with a Pop lean, EXACTLY like Q-102 in Cincy, who, last time I checked, were once again beating CC's Top 40 in Cincy, WKFS-FM Kiss 107 FM. If I was 'GTZ, I would try to spend my days trying to knock off 'MMX or Lite or K-99 and stop worrying about winning a 2-share battle with a pea-shooter like 'DKF. I would let them think they've won the battle by Z leaning more Hot AC, and then laugh my butt off when I squashed them in the long-run with my 50,000 watt monster signal, which serves 2 states and 26 counties(Remember when they used to brag about that in their imaging?), while 'DKF is lucky if they can make it into 6 counties, even with their recent "upgrade" to 6,000 watts. ;D

A station can reach across the entire country if they want, but it's a matter of serving the metro as it's recognized by Arbitron that matters. If a station's upgrade allows them to serve the metro, what good does it do to cover parts of Indiana that don't affect Dayton's numbers, and don't have significant markets to saturate?
But yes, I agree that the Q102 approach is good for taking on a station that plays so few songs and leans rhythmic. I said it before though, they need to wake up and put some content between those songs no matter what they are.

I don't think it necassarily has anything to do with urban or non-urban. Radio One simply doesn't care about their stations in the smaller non-top 50 markets. WROU-92.1 and 102.9 are both suffering with the Radio One plague like Z-93. WROU was also a better station before it was owned by Radio One. In Louisville, both CHR WDJX and Urban WGZB are not nearly as good as they were before the Radio One ownership.

A Q-102 approach may be a good consolation prize, but Q-102 and Z-93 were both in their hey-day when they were upbeat and fun. I haven't listened to either station much in a very long time, even though I'm in the area frequently, but I still listen enough to know both are too sleepy for my tastes.

I think another missing element these days that isn't the fault of the stations is that all the upbeat music seems to be rhythmically oriented. Gone are the upbeat rock/pop tunes of the 70's and 80's like Pat Benatar, Phil Collins, Bryan Adams, etc. Stream the 105.7 The Brew some time --- it's a good reminder of how listenable this music was in those days. What really made Z-93 popular was that it was a pretty upbeat station ... playing rock, pop and crossover. Upbeat DJ's, contests and imaging. It was a fun station to listen to.

I think a better approach for Z-93 would be to go the way of Wild 93.9 ....... which is basically an upbeat, white man's rhythmic/CHR station. Hot 102.9 is too black for this man's ears ..... and Power 107.5 is even blacker. (People say I'm crazy, but I get both signals and I can listen to 102.9 ... but I can't listen to 107.5). But that's probably the best they can do given the current state of the music industry.

Bottom line is that listening to today's Z-93 is like listening to Muzak and that's why their ratings stink.
