Should Radio One dump Z-93?

Every book 945 gets better and better numbers. If Z doesn't flip by the time the next book comes out there's a good chance Z may just get beat. 945 sounds A LOT better. Z also has improved though. Their crossfading has gotten much better. So yes, Radio One does need to drop them ASAP.

No matter how much they work with it, Scott Studios can't do what NexGen can do in crossfading. It sounds so geeky, but today I heard WDKF crossfade a promo over a song for about 15 seconds. It hit the post, and just sounded like one constant flow, the way a radio station should sound. The morning show is way funnier (though somewhat offensive and youger) than Z93's, the afternoon show is young and moving unlike Scott Sharp, and the night show is in and out rather than dwelling on some stupid horn game. For radio geeks like us, it's a better show around the clock. It's Z93's battle to lose if they don't fix their lazy programming before the listeners notice. They have the edge. Just get off your ass and do something.

Man Ray D Yo-All I have to say is, AMEN! Z actually had a talented guy doing afternoons back in the "glory days" with Sean Roberts(Now parttime/weekends on Mix 107.7). Scott's show is just music, sweepers, and Scott reading cue cards. Frye Guy has been doing the same exact show for three years. That "horn" game is pretty annoying. Anyhow, i'm willing to bet that Radio One won't or hasn't shown Z the money since it owned it. Their only goal from the get-go was to put Ronita Saunders out of business over at U-92 so they could own Dayton's urban radio market. Now they do. They only care about 102.9 and 92.1...Z-93 and Kiss Country(Are both their days numbered as i've heard they are, especially Kiss Country?!?) are the "odd men out" in this equation. My guess is with the rumor of Radio One moving 101.7's Urbana signal to 101.5 in Enon, I bet HOT moves to 101.5(VERY similar to what Radio One did in Cincy with The Wiz going from 100.9 to 101.1 to compensate for the MOJO 100.3 move-in), and Country is out on 101.7, which will leave a TON of angry country radio listeners in the Clark/Champaign Co. areas. That leaves the question...Who does Radio One sell Z-93 to? If Radio One doesn't plan on shoving any money Z's way, sell it to a company that cares about its heritage and its monster signal. All I have to say is 2007 will be an interesting year for us "radio geeks" as far as who owns who and what signal is moving where. Stay tuned...

The 95.7 Moving To Sharonville post has the details.

No, I'm not wishing that Kiss Country go away, but I mentioned a scenario that's possible. I was not aware of the ap for 101.5 in Enon (I take it that means the new LPFM in Fairborn that just started up goes away in that case?)

Maybe the 101.7 signal in Urbana will upgrade to 101.5 in Enon? Who knows!

Here is what I found on FCC website- looks like it was just filed 1-19-07:

Here is the coverage map: http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FM1168252.html

By the way in the same app docket, WDHT proposes changing COL from Springfield to Urbana.

There is no LPFM in Fairborn. There is a translator CP for 101.9 on the cell tower on Kauffman Avenue. Licensee is Spirit Communications, intending to rebroadcast Radio U via the 98.7 translator in Springfield. They may or may not have to change frequencies, since there's some loophole out there that allows translators to use desired/undesired signal ratios to cram in on 2nd adjacent frequencies. I think they have to show that a certain blanketing signal level doesn't reach any populated area.

There's also a translator on 101.5 in Huber Heights that just went on. It will have to find a new frequency or shut down after the WKSW move. I would imagine that Centerville High School's WCWT-FM, also on 101.5, will have to shut down or move freqs as well.

My oh my...Dayton radio seems to get even more interesting as the weekend goes by.

Looks like Cox would object for them to keep it country. Unless of course, part of the sale would require a format change on the signal.

The LPFM could object but when it comes to money...you know who will win.

If only Saunders still owned 92.1 and the other adult urban station then things would be much better in Dayton market I think.

Thanks for the info guys. These moves aren't right. The LPFM should object, just as
WIUX-LP did in Indiana.

Wont the move of 95.7 to cincy also affect the pending LPFM apps for that frequency down there?

Does Centerville High School still have their station on 101.5?

ok, i admit, i'm a little slow when it comes to this technical stuff, but this means that they are trying to move the 102.9 signal to urbana, right?

Actually the tower will stay in the same location, just the city of license will change from Springfield to Urbana. You won't notice any difference in signal.

Why are they going to move the city of license for 102.9 to Urbana if the tower is still actually out on Route 41 in Springfield? Where does this leave the 101.7/101.5 mess at? ???

It's just a technicality...they have to leave service behind in the city they're leaving, so as long as there's a strong signal in Urbana, the move of 101.5/7 can be accomplished.

What does this really means in plain English?
Urbana and part of Springfield is about to lose one signal, 101.7.

Dayton is about to gain another station, licensed to Enon on 101.5

Enon has never had a radio station. So, they call this providing a first service.

In '89-'90, Z-93 was the most popular station on campus, they played that station, morning, noon, and night.

I was looking at the Fall ratings the other day and noticed that WGTZ/Z-93 did a 2.4 in the fall book. Should Radio One dump 'GTZ's Top 40 format and go with something else? With the power of that signal, it shouldn't be doing a little over a 2 share. This is a station that did a 13 share in 1989-90. My how this station has fallen... :'(

Their old sister station 92-X did about the same back in their hey day. After they pulled the plug on 92-X, I remember driving to Cincy and Dayton and couldn't get enough of Z-93, which was just about an exact clone. That station sounded great! And when I lived in Cincy, I would put up with Z-93's static because it was such a great radio station ... much better than Q-102.

Hate to say this, but it doesn't sound so great these days. Choice of music is very lame, IMO, and the imaging is horrible. It's not very listenable to my ears ........ wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it like I used to listen to the old 92-X and Z-93.

The need to dig up some old Great Trails people and put them back to work on that station.

That may be the message being delivered to the FCC...."we are still giving Urbana a station in 102.9. At the same time, a new 101.5 would serve the fine community of Enon with their very own signal for the first time." Um, no....it is Dayton all the way with 101.5 AND 102.9. Even though Enon for 101.5 and Urbana for 102.9 would be the official cities of license, the target for both is definitely Dayton.

The "first local service" has been a joke for a long time; obviously Enon couldn't support its own radio station. But, yes, its technically correct that as long as 102.9 is relicensed to Urbana, service continues. It should also be pointed out that Urbana hasn't had a station that specifically targeted Urbana for a long time (pre-dating 1996).
