Signs that a jock is a burnout

And I only use one fake name on here. I think you have to own a station in order to be able to use 3 fake names (old skool, coldcoffee, radiowannabe).

Are you accusing me of being Old SKool? Thanks but no thanks! When I used to call in and talk to people that worked at that station they were usually quite friendly to me as a listener but they had little problem dumping on their management. They used to occassionally mention some of the stuff that went on there. So I would guess most of their "burnout" was with their boss and not fans of the station. It's just hard to believe anyone would want to work for someone who treats them like that.

Gee.... The reason that some people never get ahead is because they scorn those who are successful and tell themselves that getting ahead and being successful is somehow a sell-out. Thanks, but I want to be like the guys who are successful.

Radioindy, you think anyone is on the air without those "idiotic listeners"? You bet it is the listeners who are responsible for the paycheck. Advertisers are the ones providing the money, but without the listeners driving the ratings, that money goes to someone else.

You're going to listen to a country station even if you don't like country because you like the dj?

You listen to Alternative Rock even though you don't like it, because you like the dj?

You listen to Classic Rock, even though you don't like Lynyrd Skynyrd because you want to hear washed up djs crack the mic for 90 seconds every third song?

People choose radio stations based on the format and the selection of songs in that format. You can't focus your entire marketing/format on the handful of daily callers (unless you want to fail - which happens when you let listeners program your format - rookie ownership mistake.)

Every station in Indy that has failed, including the recently failed classic rock station, has failed because the owner/gm has chosen the wrong music.

Other than a Bob & Tom or a Howard Stern situation, MUSIC FORMAT is the reason people choose a station. If you think it's because of the djs you are still living in the 60s - which is why your station is failing.

perhaps if the dj`s were allowed to be more creative ,without doing a philibuster like stern or bob and tom, between music they could be a major reason people listen and radio would be better and more interesting.

But that would go against all consultanting. c'mon, you think you know more than the paid consultants? That's why radio is in the great state it's in now! You jocks think you know everything.

That is a great point flashback - creativity is not allowed any longer - and it is all because of what Radioindy says - consultants and wall streeters - people in charge who know nothing about the business.

That doesn't change my argument about listeners. Continue to treat them like crap (regardless of format) you won't be around long.

I am just a listener.I never worked in radio but I know this.tjhe kind of things consultnts bring to radio are ruining what made radio great.it is a good thing wls radio didn`t have consultents keeping guys like larry lujack in line.

I have no intention of going back to those conditions.
"Conditions"... Ya make it sound like you're SOOO much better than on air talent & being with the "little people" would be out of the quention...(until you NEED something). How can you have such a snobby attitude being in an ickie place like Indy anyway?

Excellent point Flashpoint. I wonder why people on here don't think listeners would take the time to post?

I think there are a lot of listeners like me that enjoy reading these boards to learn about the inner workings of the business. But I would guess that most people on here have something to do with the industry. One of my favorite things to do on here is trying to decifer who are the real casual listeners just making points about their favorite stations and who are the "insiders" trying to pose as listeners.

One owner says everyone that is critical of his station is a former employee. I saw one person accussing a poster of being a fellow general manager. I saw another saying it was a rival dj. Trying to figure out who is who and watching people get called out is as much fun as the posts themselves.

See, radio in Indy is so bad, and listeners are so starved for real entertainment that they come here to watch the 'insiders' beat up on each other, and owners calling out former employees. How pathetic is that!

Gee RadioIndy,...remember when you beat up on me for being "Russ"? Sounds like the former employees also like to call out the owners. How pathetic is that?

If you think your burned out, you should try being one of your listeners. Indeed, good broadcasting is now only a memory.

When your station gets smoked by an automated jukebox playing classic rock - and you chose the music and liners - the buck stops with you!

To bad there's no one to tell the owner he's brain dead and burnt out.

[/quote]

My last PD gig I was told what music to play, what promotions to run, what jocks to hire and put in what shifts, and what shows to run, and what sports to put on.

Yet the buck still stopped with me....when the VP of Programming and the GMs plan flopped, I got fired.

There are a lot more listeners on this board and others than you may even think.

I had an issue with a staff member once...so he had all of his friends run in here and post.

You would be really surprised...I was when I found out that 90% of the people on these boards don't work in radio.

But looking back, when I was working FT in radio...I didn't have time to post on here. I was too busy making sure blah blah blah was working and answering the phone for all the silent alarms.

When you get great joy by disguising your voice & calling the call-in show on the station that fired you due to budget cuts, & ripping the GM/owner a new one on the air & get the rest of the community riled up to chime in as clients hear how bad it is & drop their accounts-and the announcer that takes the call knows it's really you & just plays along because you're still friends! :D :) ;D :D :)

I was informed by more than one or two people that you had an issue with everyone Matt. No one liked you because you had a negative attitude, arrogant and a know it all that talked down to everyone. "burnt" one too many they say.

tmac1960 why would owners of stations in Northern Michigan take the time to post here?

Sounds like a lot of personal bitching and nothing to do with burnout. Let me give it a shot, with some advice...

You know when someone is burnt when all their breaks are "That was, I am and coming up is." You wonder why tracking 5 states away is cost effective? Put a little effort into it.

You know when someone is burnt when the energy they once had is now absent, and has been for more than a week. We all have our down days and spells, but as a pro, if you don't want to get out of it, you're burnt.

You know you're burnt when you wake up and say "why the hell am I still doing this?" No one is forcing you to keep this "low paying" job that you thought would make you a "star." This isn't the 1950s and 60s. Stars are on TV in this day and age. Entertainers belong on radio. Be an entertainer and you will get noticed and make good money. Really, it works that way.

You know you're burnt when you drive through a major market like Chicago, and even thou you work in market 210 you say "I should be here instead of this ass." That ass worked theirs off to get there. All good things come to those who wait. Hone your craft, take advice from a lot of people, as opinions on who is good and who isn't varies greatly in this business, and keep sending things out and getting opinions on your work. It's hard to be told you're not doing something right, but in the end, if you work at it, it will pay off.

Some food for thought. Chew at least 100 times for easier digestion and smile. It's only life.

Yeah, they said you would respond with your typical attitude. Also said you came very close to getting your clock cleaned on more than one occasion with the mouth. Said you claimed Market 3 before but was in reality 248 that claims Chicago. Good luck with the...attitude.
