BUT...what's the real reason going on here? The Beat is barely a contender anymore. Is the audience outgrowing the format, or into their own iPod, or are people finally tiring of the hate that laces so much of that musical genre?

Painting-info is --------->>>>>> that-a-way, and they don't mind your stupidly broad brush strokes.

Fact is there is no passionate leader at K104 that can lead the station out of the slump! Slump is exactly what it is and it did not get there over night. Ken Dowe's high rotation stead beat formatics made K104 and feel if Ken were still there he would have evolved with the flow and K104 would still be a contender. PPM is not the enemy here and Ken Dowe is out of the picture. It's time for Hymen to step up and get a leader to handle the programming and operations and he step back into the sales areana where he belongs. Think there are to many people surrounding him now telling him what he wants to hear. Film at 11!

Super Dowe to the rescue!!!!.... Anyway....

I guess K104 will be doing "more music mornings" until the new morning host is revealed next week.

THERE IS NO ROOM IN A WHITE PPM MEASUREMENT SYSTEM FOR 4 URBAN STATIONS.

Maybe there's just no room for 4 urban stations. That same "white" PPM system seems to be working pretty well for KBXX and KMJQ in Houston.

Top 40 is now what hip hop used to be.

Hip-hop used to drive the pop chart... but when Usher puts out a song that sounds like David Guetta, it's safe to say that hip-hop is in the doldrums right now.

You should already know why their ratings are so high... by default!!! (They are the only Urbans in town)

My theory is that some sub-groups are more loyal to their radio stations than others; that in the days of the diary they may have exaggerated time spent listening. The 'Purple People Meter' takes that out of the ratings by giving a more accurate reading of how much a 'listener' is exposed to a station. I think that is why hispanic stations, for instance, saw big drops in the early PPM testing. It may apply to urban formats as well.

Isn't that what I said?

No radio group in their right mind would flip anything to urban to challenge either of those stations either. There's no room for another urban competitor, just like there's not room for them in DFW. Urbans thrived under the old diary system because people could "vote" for their favorite stations, rather than having a device measure what they were actually listening to. The simple fact is urban formats are not generally workplace friendly. I work a few blocks from a Subway, and every time I go in there, the staff (almost exclusively young and black) is listening to KODA. I suppose they could be huge Celine Dion fans, but I think it's more likely that the owner of that store dictates what station the radio stays on.

It's not Arbitron's fault that Dallas is over-radioed with urban formats.

Someone forgot to mention Buck Wilde takes over mornings soon. According to All Access, he comes from WBHJ in Birmingham Al. which is owned by Cox Broadcasting.

I heard that Buck Wilde and the comedian from his show will join Jade and DeDe.

There are only 2 Urban formatted stations in D/FW.. KBFB and KKDA-FM. KSOC and KRNB are Urban ADULT Contemporary stations.

The number one reason why K104 and/or The Beat's downward trend is the Music sucks.
The number two reason why K104 and/or The Beat's downward trend is the 18-34 demo is to fickle. K104 was a better station when the target demo was adults.

Many people told me, especially when I worked promotions for V100, that they listened to Skip Murphy and Co. in the mornings, then switched to V100 after they went off the air. So what I am trying to say that an URBAN station can compete in the key adult demos without screaming into the mike.

Thaks Salem! Good post and good information. I too feel that an more adult sounding "Urban" in DWF could bring back those numbers K104 enjoyed in the past. 18-34 is a hard demo to maintain.

you can bash me if you want, but it seemed to change when Ken Dowe left

Sorry Radioaircheck, I don't pray at the alter of Ken Dowe. He turned K104 over to the kids to bring along his baby KRNB and they both have suffered. K104 was a polished adult sounding station (5am to 6pm) that was in the community and had focus. Michael Spears and Terri Avery were a GREAT MANAGEMENT team.

KRNB changes directions as often as I change my draws. If Ken Dowe was so great, why he couldn't work his magic on KRNB or on KKDA.
