Smooth Jazz/AC formats left

Looking at their playlog for today CIWV looked like they were playing the same old BA stuff except for the Canadian content. Old Roberta Flack, Simply Red, Toni Braxton..Very little new or even recent music and lots of pop vocals.

Seems WJZL's days may be numbered... their ratings sunk all the way down to a 2.3 in the spring book and with their sale to Midwest Communications I seriously doubt they'll want to keep the format. It's the last terrestrial SJ station in the state, the other full-time formats are on HD (WDZH Detroit's V98.7 and WOOD-FM Grand Rapids which runs the BA format).

I thought I would put this post here instead of starting a new thread.

I read about them selling WJZL. Tonight I went to their site http://www.wjzlonline.com/ and it's goes to WMGI Mix 100.7 in Terre Haute, Indiana. Could be a mistake, I don't know?

Midwest Communications has a history of completely confusing their websites at times. For several days, 1007mixfm.com redirected to one of their stations in Peoria.

Thanks for the information. I didn't know. Looks like WJZL has a new site up.

Now that Tampa FL, Reno NV, and Columbus OH dismissed their Smooth Jazz format. How many do we SJ/NAC do we have left and which station is going to be the last remaining NAC/SJ formats? KIFM 98.1 in San Diego? KTWV 94.7 in Los Angeles?

Whoever is involved with Chilljazz.com, is posting on his Facebook page breaking news that smooth jazz is returning to the NY City market on an FM signal?

As best I can figure this is the "current" list give or take. Don't know if I've missed anyone or if someone on the list has changed recently. The real question concerns the vocal to instrumental ratio and how that's affecting the programming on terrestial signals. It seems the stations in PPM markets are more vocal and the instrumental based stations are in the smaller markets or on the internet. Many of the smaller market signals are still associated with the BA network in some way and BA also claims to have 35 HD-2 streams going in various markets. As to who's left standing...your guess is as good as anybody's.

KIFM...San Diego
KTWV...LA
WLOQ...Orlando
KWJZ...Seattle
KYOT...Phoenix
WLFM...Chicago (on a TV frequency)
WSBZ...Ft. Walton Beach/Destin
WXJZ...Gainesville
WSJW...Harrisburg
KRVR...Stockton/Modesto
WAEG...Augusta
WJZL...Lansing
KMGQ...Santa Barbara
WAUN...Green Bay
WKYL...Lexington
KFMP...Redding
KYZK...Sun Valley
KEFM...Chico
KORL...Honolulu
WJCD...Norfolk
KMYT...Temecula
KQJZ...Kalispell
KJJZ...Palm Springs
WQJZ...Salibury
KUJJ...Tri Cities

I think you pretty much have everyone listed Bill. The only I don't see on there is KYSJ on Coos Bay.

On another note, last night, I couldn't sleep, so I listened to KWJZ after Chill and they played some great music. Of course there a bad song every once in a while, but lots of great music that other stations don't think about playing. Wish I could the playlist from last night to pass along. KWJZ is a doing a nice job in my view.

Just read where Green Bay changed from Smooth Jazz to Smooth AC, all supplied by BA. I would assume that BA is trying to convert the instrumental stations they have left to the more vocal concept of Smooth AC.

KMGQ in Santa Barbara just change to classic rock as 106.3 THE Surf

Doesn't surpise me that KMGQ flipped. BA stations are away fast. I still see KMYT, KJJZ, and maybe WMJX going away by the end of the year. Thanks for keeping us updated Bill.

Just curious - why do you see KJJZ "going away" by the end of the year?

Nick Summers
(producing many commercials airing on KJJZ)

Seems as of late (over the last few months), many BA (Broadcast Architecture) stations have been flipped to other formats. Stations like WJZA, WJZX, KJZS, KMGQ, could be a couple of more I missed. This is just my opinion, but I don't think are going to start focusing more on their new Smooth AC format instead of the smooth jazz network. That's why I don't see holding on much longer.

In a way, I hope I'm wrong. I don't want to see another smooth jazz station go by the wayside. I have had the chance to listen to KJJZ morning show some in the last few weeks, they're pretty good and I hope they hold on because they are great station. Would like to see more local talent added. We'll see. Hope I answered your question. :)

Yes, I'd be very surprised if KJJZ changed formats. It's one of the stronger performers in this 4 station group, and from my perspecive in the production room there has been no talk about a format change.

The station has a lot going on: A smooth jazz Sunday Brunch and a Friday smooth jazz happy hour at 2 upscale resorts. The 2nd year of a Monday night football event. Plus, the station is involved with 2 separate smooth jazz music series featuring big name performers this season. These are not events just for exposure - all are revenue producers.

Here in l'il ol' market 129, much of ad sales is good old direct selling. There is a lot of repeat business on K-Jazz, due in part to the fact that at least a couple of our sales people are passionate about this station and its ability to deliver results for the advertisers. Plus, it's been doing smooth jazz for 14 years and is well-established in the market.

It's disappointing that smooth jazz FM is taking such terrible hits out there in the PPM markets. In Palm Springs, however, it's doing just fine.

That's good that you all have a lots of events going on for folks in the area there Nick. I wish we had more of your people working at other stations across the nation, maybe smooth jazz on the FM would last longer. Continue success at KJZZ buddy. 8)

Had to edit because it's posted before I was finish.
