Smooth Jazz out, but who's in?????

I think that alot of people that listened t 95.7 the wave are starting to listen to 92.1 Praise.

These are two totally different formats. There may be a segment of people who listen to both, however I would not call it a "lot of people." I was there at the beginning in November 2002 until the end of January this year. In that time, I got a pretty good handle on the listenership of The Wave. The majority does not listen to Praise 92.1.

I would think that a significant portion of The Wave's listener base are adult African-Americans who are looking for an alternative to Majic 102. And of that listener base, a good chunk of them might also enjoy Praise 92.1. I'm sure that a portion of Sunny 99.1's audience also listens to KSBJ. There are going to be lifestyles and psychographics that fit multiple formats.

Pehaps I'm out in left field here, but I felt that the launch of KHJZ helped doom KRTS. The Classical and Smooth Jazz formats shared some demos...and I use myself as an example...I listened to both. KRTS seemed to sink below its Mendoza line after SJ returned to the market.

BTW, Chuck, I got your e-mail. Thanks for the info. I have a lengthy aircheck of KHJZ when it was brand new and still running jockless. I haven't listened to the tapes since I made them, but I guess I should dig those out...would be interesting to compare the playlists then and now.

What would CBS do?

Like everyone else I think Fresh or Movin, but I would like them to take a chance. CBS seems to be better at that than anyone, Free FM not withstanding. Personally I would dig a "95-7 K-Rock "Kikkin' new rock" w/KIKK FM calls.......

And for the newbies, names not withstanding, try the "Search" feature, like some have suggested, or try just browsing the site, you might find the answer to your question. Many have asked these questions. I suggest also that if you do ask, make it "thinking question", olders users know ;). I am not in the industry, although I work for a Satellite Service, but I ask just some very curious questions sometimes. Sometimes it IS just better to sit around a learn, THEN comment. It worked for Me. Unlike those who could be a little brash w/the new users, just some advice.

we need MOVING 95.7 in Houston. I personally think such a format has a very good chance in Htown .
every other city has it and why not us ???

Since CBS still has the KIKK calls...maybe they should go back to the Texas format they "tried" for a while before a certain PD at that time ruined it. Jeff Garrison has a much better grasp of the Texas music and format. I've been hoping for years they'll try again. They won't but...

Texas country.... That'd be great. Texas country with some country classic mix (none of today's (so-called) country)... I'd make that my only preset and break out my "I'm Proud to be a KIKKER" stickers :)

Yay... lets completely over-run ourselves with country stations like Dallas did!

Just curious, how do you know alot of people listen to 92.1 or if The Wave is isn't going to flip? What do you base this on?

Neither station is in the top 15 12+ or 25-54 share. That makes both subject to reevaluation now that Houston is a PPM market.

Hi CW,

That statement was made mostly in jest, but in many ways, that's the way I feel as a listener. I grew up listening to KILT as my top 40 station and KIKK as my country station. In the mid 70's I swapped over to KILT FM when I finally saved enough coins to get that AM-FM radio. The talent was great, and the programming fresh at both KIKK and KILT so I'd alternate days to listen to both. Getting to my point, todays mainstream country just don't do it for me, and as many have mentioned in numerous posts on this board, most of the major stations have plenty of talent, but they don't let them loose to entertain. With that said, I realize that this is just my opinion, one which may be shared by some or opposed by others. When I have the chance to listen to KMKS, the programming has the hometown station flavor where the DJ's are talking to you and not at you. That's one of the things that have earned 102.5 a preset on my radio. I guess I relate to the "Hot Country" and "Texas Country Genres because my son has played in several bands that perform some of both... and some classic country. As far as 100.3 goes, the last time I listened to them, they did a pretty good job of reaching their targeted demographic, which means that the old fogey such as I, has to fend for himself. Bottom line, KILT is one of the leading stations in Houston for many, but I thought I'd throw in a plug for the hometown guy as well.

Now... back to the original subject of smooth jazz out and who's in??? I'm with LTT on bringing KIKK back with Texas Country, but I'd add the twist of mixing in some classic country for the old, fat, non targeted demographic type like myself who enjoys both music styles. :)

Well yes about the wave not fliping is an opinion but about 92.1 praise I know for a fact. Well lets say I know people that own Radio One. And Thats all Im saying.

VERY possibly not true, but I've heard from 2 sources -- one at CBS and one from the agency world -- that Smooth Jazz will flip at the end of October. Supposedly, and again I am not certain but I'm passing it on, they were going to do JACK (or a close approximation) but then Cumulus beat them to it. I hear that what few living creatures existed to service that station have been slated for termination, and the company is now foraging for a different format.

Funky Larry Jones said that place was a morgue when he left for KROI. Good riddens, Uncle Funky, you've done great at Praise 92.1!!!!!

Maybe you are right about the end of October. The Wave has not scheduled any sponsored events/concerts past October.

November looks a bit lonely.

As it does every year. The Wave birthday party is usually the last event of the year. We will have to wait and hear.

That makes sense. Thanks for the clarification.
