something brewing in Cleveland area radio today

From WNWV's sister property (for now), The Elyria Chronicle-Telegram.

No word on the purchase price.

Whatever Rubber City does with 107.3 is pure speculation right now.

It's obvious that 107.3 will have to move out of their current Broad Street studios in Elyria when the deal closes. Possibly may be moved in a temporary basis to the RCRG HQ in Akron until new studios - presumably at their current sales HQ in Rocky River - are ready. (I thought there already were auxiliary studios for WNWV at Rocky River, but it appears I was wrong.)

I wouldn't be shocked if RCRG intends to still target Cleveland with 107.3. Who knows? It would be tough to see it operated solely as a rimshot into Akron. And it would be almost impossible to move the signal southeast without all sorts of problems.

Did RCRG have other options or was WNWV the only "for sale" station in Cleveland. Would CBS break up the cluster and sell stations individually? The Fish?

I'm told that RCRG only wanted WNWV. May have looked at ELB as a whole briefly, but WNWV was what they wanted all along.

Which, if Thom Mandel does decide to sell eventually, this sweetens the pot for the entire group.

In my opinion, if I bought the CBS group, I'd also get 95.5 and sell off 92.3. At least 95.5 has more of a reasonable region-wide signal in comparison to 92.3 (and both share the same tower in Warrensville Heights).

Nathan, so you don't think RCRG tried to make a deal with any other stations... they just set their eyes on WNWV? I thought the Fish might have been a good target.

Salem probably wanted $$ out of RCR's ballpark. ELB must have (obviously) gave them a reasonable offer.

Who has better coverage...95.5 or 107.3? Ahhhh...95.5 is directional. WNWV isn't.

Yes, one's tower is west of Hopkins Airport...one is just off I-271 on the east side. I'd say 107.3 wins in the Cleveland/Akron area.

Neither get out like WMJI, WNCX, or a couple others...but, WNWV has very good coverage.

Thom Mandel was in talks with ELB for close to a year, after their previous chairman, Cooper Hudnutt, unexpectedly passed away.

It was just uncertain if he only wanted 107.3, the Sandusky stations, or some combination therein.

AFAIK, they never talked with the Salem people.

Remember that 95.5 has to protect WLKR/95.3 in Norwalk. And they often have to compete with 100kW WKQI/95.5 Detroit if the area gets tropo-happy - WKQI and WCLV came on board at the same time, and WKQI was a grandfathered super-power FM signal.

WNWV's transmitter is located in Grafton Township, across from the Lorain County Jail. The print article in Friday's Chronicle said that RCRG would lease the current WNWV tower from ELB once the deal closes.
