something brewing in Cleveland area radio today

Rumors are flying a class-B FM in the Cleveland metro area will either change format or is it somethng else? Supposed to be announced later today.

Class B, doesn't narrow it down too much. :D

It has nothing to do with Clear Channel in any way, per a tweet by the Primary(tm).

CBS' stations are pretty much safe right now ("The Fan" isn't moving to 98.5... lol). So are Radio One's stations.

By that process of elimination, only two class B-1 stations come to mind. One moreso than the other.

Might something go "boom" in the radio landscape today?

If it is what we think it is, the options for said station are limited.

What would they flip to? Country? Top 40? Syndicated FM talk?

Or did a certain someone quietly reconsider his "not in the cards" position for buying an FM signal?

I have no clue.

Country wouldn't make sense, isn't that WKFM's role? Top 40? Would they want to try and tackle Kiss FM? Or blow it all up and simulcast WEOL? ELB seems to have a pretty poor deck of cards in their hands right now unfortunately.

Any format change would require promotional dollars, and why waste a huge-signal FM on mostly or all networking/satellite programming? That wouldn't get ratings, and wouldn't drive big revenues.

Could be GKB.....or, maybe somebody else nearby is opening their wallets? Who knows.

There is one other possibility - said station might have a new owner... and a new home base... soon.

But one thing is for sure. There will be a change, and soon.

Theoretically, the talk format on WEOL could move to FM, allowing them to clear shows that WEOL currently can't clear because of long-lasting sports contracts (Mark Levin, Phil Hendrie, Neil Boortz, a whole lot of TRN weekend product). And with the FSR contract on WKRK, moving it from 930 to 107.3 is a non-starter.

If THAT happened, then WEOL could either go with all-sports (as the FSR contract still holds for WEOL) with Jim Rome or whatever... or is WEOL blown up for a music format?

And if WNWV specifically is sold off, what happens to ELB as a whole? WEOL can't support itself outside of sports coverage, and it's an AM at that. By virtue of its' signal, it can't be coupled with the Sandusky cluster in Milan Township, nor can the Sandusky cluster move to WEOL's home base in Elyria. Does the rest of the group go to another buyer? (If WNWV is leased, that could be another story.)

Dueling FM sports talkers would certainly be interesting, especially when certain rights (cough, Indians, cough, Cavaliers) come up. Those two teams would definitely like having an FM flagship, and that is something that Clear Channel can't really offer them now. Are we all ready for a Cleveland sports radio Battle Royale?

Mark Levin is on WHK from 9-11p.

Don't tell me Big Daddy Mel (the Poppa Joe myth has been busted) is buying his baby boy an early Christmas present.

If the WEOL talk format is coming to FM, then there is plenty of stuff that can fill the time.

Already on WEOL 930, we have Laura Ingraham 9-noon, Clark Howard noon-3, Sean Hannity 3-6.

The rest of the schedule could easily be filled out with Micheal Svage 6-9, Rusty Humphries 9p-1a (the midnight hour is a replay of the 1st hour), and Phil Hendrie 1-4.

Maybe get Bob and Tom/Mancow/Quinn and Rose as the AMD show.

And could someone perhaps be "FISH-ing" for an FM station?

I wonder what Rubber City is thinking of doing with WNWV. Country, rock, and oldies are obviously out of the picture.

Well it's "later today". Will someone just post when there are some actual facts, please?

As per the Mighty Blog of Fun(tm) via the Chronical-Telegram, Rubber City Radio, has in fact purchased WNWV from ELB.

Now the sale still needs the official blessing from the FCC, so until then, V 107.3 will maintain the status quo, run by ELB.

Once the keys are in RCR's hands, then we'll go from there as to what the format is, or whether they will turn it into an Akron-focused station or keep it as a Cleveland/all around NE Ohio station.

Actually I wonder if there may be some signal shuffling coming up....for instance move the country format to 107.3 to still cover Akron, but put a better signal in the Cleveland area, then put oldies on 94 and turn 1590 into Akron News Now full-time.

Of course RCRG just cut loose two news/sports staffers for "economic reasons" so a full-time newser is unlikely.

Most likely it will remain a music format, as RCRG didn't seem to care for news/talk when they had it on 1590 in the 90's. (Perhaps just a tweeking of the current AAA).
