In a fairweather, non-sports market like Atlanta, this is untennable. 92.9 will be back to music in a year.

Someone will probably blink, but not CBS ("The Eye", even).

Sports is a long-term strategy for them. They aren't gonna flip a year in, either in Atlanta, here in Cleveland or elsewhere.

Long-term. They'll even take fair-to-middling ratings for the first year or two as long as A) they can sell spots (which is remarkably easy for sports radio) and B) build the brand, add PBP as necessary, etc.

New 92.9 PD Terry Foxx added the Pittsburgh Pirates' rights at 93.7 The Fan in Pgh. 92.3 here certainly will be in the mix at the expiration of the Browns/Indians/Cavaliers' contracts with Clear Channel.

That's fine, except this isn't a pro-sports friendly city like Cleveland or Pittsburgh. Once you move south of DC, pro-sports doesn't matter so much, even in markets with pro teams (Atlanta, Nashville, Charlotte, Jacksonville, Orlando, etc.). I stand by my prediction.

Geez - you guys are right. Too bad the fans of this city don't fill a 90,000 seat stadium in Athens, a 45,000 seat stadium in Atlanta, and contribute to the filling of stadiums in Clemson, Auburn, Knoxville, Tuscaloosa, Columbia, etc. every Saturday in the Fall.

You guys must not spend a lot of time listening to either sports station here, if you think Pro Sports is what drives programming.

Also haven't noticed the Falcons having much trouble filling their stadium lately.

Funny moment this morning: around 8:25, Steve Craig played "Don't Change" by INXS..then mentioned the band and the song title and then said something like "yeaaaah" or "mmmkay"

I am sure they will do something compelling like hire Mara back yet again.

They could call it "Sports Mara-thon 92.9", you know because if it wasn't working before it will be sure to work if they change the name again.

If talking was an Olympic Sport, Mara would certainly have more Olympic medals than Michael Phelps. Hey, maybe I am on to something here. There just might be a way to make it work.... :-\

From Rodney Ho's writeup:

"An official name hasn’t been dubbed yet for the sports staton, In other markets, CBS has names such as the Hub and the Ticket."

Not a fan of the "Fan" branding, Rodney? ::)

Is already up with a redirect to 790!
for now. Quick thinking.
DAVE -FM flipping to sports was one of the worse kept secrets. Why would a big company like CBS make such a rookie mistake? Not what one would call a great way to get started? Especially when they say in their press release that they are "busy working on apps and their website"! Really?

The above is meaningless when talking about sports radio.

92.9? We know nothing. No known affiliation (NBC or CBS), no known personalities, no known format aspect, no idea of how they will run it (local all day, synd and night?). That is my point. By the way, I expect 106.7 to grow in the ratings battle and be a strong competition of WSB in the near future.

Well, we know something based on what CBS has done with FM sports in other markets. In fact, the 92.9 PD is coming from the CBS sports FM in Pittsburgh. Additionally, Rick Caffey said he plans to hire local hosts.

I think 106.7 sounds really good, but I disagree that it will challenge WSB. I'm thinking a 1.5-2 max if that.

Well, isn't that standard in southern all news stations? Even if they get those ratings, they will still continue to make money, won't they?

IMHO: Atlanta market being short of 24 / 7 market covering signals AM /1 and FM, any of the big in town signals (7) and the move in C's and C0's will have positive cash flow. The only exception would be the cost of the radio property if purchased in the last 10 years.

I wonder how they're going to cover the Atlanta Thrashers.

Wouldn't put that past the new PD except that he didn't realize Pittsburgh had a team that had won the Stanley Cup 6 months before he started there. ::)

One question I haven't heard discussed.. Will they change calls?
They didn't change them for Dave...WZGC has a certain amount of heritage. The only older calls I can think of on the ATL commercial FM dial are WSB-FM (natch) and WKLS.

The only recent changes of historical calls I can think of are WFOX (which Cox parked in another market) and WPCH (ditto, this time CC), and WNGC (which Cox put on another station in the same market). Besides those you'd have to go back 20 years or more to when J-P changed WQXI-FM to WSTR, or Jacor changing WCHK-FM to WGST-FM, to find another example of long-standing calls being changed.
