Star and BucWild to Return to Airwaves

I think Pulse 87.7 can succeed if it does things that aren't being done by the other stations in the area, even with their signal limitations (compared to the stations on Empire). Something like what WLIR did in the 80's, breaking the hits months before mainstream radio even picked up on them as "new" music.

There's such a lively music scene in the city, whether it's indie rock, dance, hip-hop, and stations like Z100 and Hot 97 and KTU aren't really picking up on it at all. I see all the ads for clubs and joints with live music in Time Out NY and papers like the Village Voice and then you have the whole Myspace scene as well. I'm not saying that the station should be completely out there and ignore the mainstream, but if it can carve out a niche by hitting the streets and picking up what's popular with the younger folks who aren't listening to stations like Z100, and break new acts and hit songs before the big guys, then they can succeed, even if they're not in the Arbitron book. If the station creates a vibe and the listeners respond to the ads, they will see success.

I believe they also own low-power channels 44 and 54, the L.I./Brooklyn "local access" tandem then-owned (probably still is) by some guy named Jim Chladek.

And to tie this thread into a big ol' bow, 44/54 in the early 90's used to air a hip-hop heavy video request show called "American Hot Video". (Except for that one time they actually honored some viewer's request to air a video with "skateboarding" in it so they played "Free Fallin'".) And of course, you had to call a 900 number to request videos... the same 900 number you'd use to talk to the psychics that filled the other odd hours of the stations' schedule...

I remember "American Hot Video" with some hot white chick, "Flava Videos" with Bobby Simmons, and the psychics, but it's been a long time since these stations were on 44 and 54, (and 38 in NYC)...

The proprietor of Channel 6 is a company called Island Broadcasting. They also own a bunch of UHF low power stations in the area. Channel 34, 39, etc. All of these run leased-access programming.

Actually, Island Broadcasting was tied into Metro Access, which was run by Jim Chladek. Gradually during the mid 1990s, channel 38 moved to 39 (WNYN-LP), 44/54 disappeared, and 26 (WNXY-LP), 32 (WXNY-LP), and 35 (WNYX-LP) materalized in the City. Channel 6 (WNYZ-LP) was the baby of the group.

Earlier this year, Metro Access shut down. Channel 39 was sold to Azteca America, which has been leasing the airtime for the past few years. The other stations all went off the air and were supposed to be sold. However, channel 35 has recently reappeared and is airing a continuous loop of old episodes of the Chladek-hosted "The New Yorkers" and some Christmas music program. Channel 6 is also back on the air with nature/wildlife DVDs as a backdrop to their Russian music programming, which continued after the video signal was shut off. Channels 26 and 32 are still showing color bars.

Reception is going to be bad in Manhattan and near to non-existent in New Jersey. I also wonder about Staten Island...

That's a huge chunk of the NYC metro that won't be able to hear this new station, while they can tune in Z-100 with no problems.

I don't know what led 87.7 to move away from the Russian pop music format....it seemed like a smart niche (and was superserving a large part of New York City's ethnic population). They had exclusivity with that formula.

Stephanie, I'm not so sure that's as much of an issue as people are saying. I've picked it up loud and clear in both Manhattan and North Jersey, on a car radio that's not much more selective than the average.

Although I must confess I'm going to miss the Best of the '80's in Russian ...

Anita

I live up in Westchester County and I pick up 87.7fm very loud and clear. I can't wait to hear Star & Buc and this new station format

It's not often you see such ego-driven arrogance combined with painful and frequent mis-spellings on his website. I doubt you've ever spent anytime working in commercial radio. Anyone who would actually go on TV and shout "I run a pirate station" has got more than one screw loose.

I hear the Pulse on 87.7 is bringing them back!! LOL!! WOW!! Good for them if they bring back The Star and Buc Wild show in the morning!! "Put the nail in the coffin" as Star would say, on Hot 97 and Power 105.1... Miss Jones on Hot 97 is SOOOOO Wack!!! Their Jokes make me want to vomit how corny they are! Ed Lover on Power 105.1, good dude but he don't stand a chance! LMAO! Smart man Star!.... Star's Morning show is going to make all those sponsors pull out on the big giants!! Good for those radio stations who's Program Directors are into politics and don't give the real talent the time of day! They are the reason why I put together a pirate radio station back in 1994 and 1995. At that time Hot 97 was the only Hip Hop station in NYC and they were the target because of their payola problems. Hot 97's Program Director and Music Director would only hook up those they know and those who would pay them off. Now we have both Hot 97 and Power 105.1 who are in CONTROL and they are both doing the same things. Good for them both!! I hope to see them both crash!! For those of you who don't know about DJ CINTRONICS, Look me up at www.myspace.com/cintronics or www.djcintronics.com There you can see the I Team UPN9 news report they did when I had my Pirate Radio Station..

You have a point BUT it will put a Dent on NYC, you watch! Most people who listen in the morning are people who listen in their car radios.. Yes its true the signal is weak but in the car its not so bad.. Radio is sooooooo boring in the morning! I think Star on a weak Station in NYC will lead to other things for him.. Star is a smart guy and he knows what he's doing.. As far as Pulse they will only make alittle noise for a short time until the Big guys give in to the King of the Hip Hop morning show Star! LMAO

First of all, if Star was so smart, he'd stop getting fired for moronic things, he wouldn't be relegated to a
dink butt frequency/ signal and he wouldn't have been unemployed for over a year. As for being the king of Hip Hop Mornings, the station is going to be CHR and he has said many times that he hates Hip Hop and likes rock.

Being in a car only matters if your car is located near their transmitter. He and his new pseudo station are no threat to anyone except WBLI's listeners in Suffolk. Star will get fired long before anyone goes 2 miles West on their dial to find the frequency I use to broadcast my Ipod

What in the world are you talking about? 87.7 broadcasts from Queens, and their signal covers most of the five boroughs pretty well, and makes it into Nassau, Westchester, Fairfield County, Northern NJ.

As for being in a car not mattering, I beg to differ. Car radios are usually able to "pull in" many more stations than the average home radio, whether that is a boom box or stereo system or rinky-dink alarm radio. At home in Queens, however, I'm able to pull in 87.7 easily on every radio in my house, even my cheapie alarm clock radio.

this commercial LPFM, is going to shake up the radio world, not to mention the fact that LPfM's will be popping up all over the country, and will have to try different formats to survive, this with star and this what people call a low budget station could beginning of w3hat could bring the regular sheep back to there radio's especailly after giving them what they really want to hear. Since the operating cost is much lower, they can take more risk with music and different types of programming than the rest of the BIG Class b and c stations.

KTU has been irrelevant for years. I used to listen to 103.5 back in the late 90's when they had the saturday night dance factory. When it got later in the night they used to play some really good dance. I do beleive that since Pulse 87 would not be under a lot of pressure for ratings, they can really play some dance music, hire some DJ's outside of Star and Bucwild and hopefully give it that Party 105, original hot 97 sound that New Yorkers have been looking for, for years.
