Strange transmission on 89.3 FM

I've heard a pirate called "College Radio" before, it didn't broadcast 24/7, however this was years ago and I do not remember what frequency it was on, it was somewhere on the noncomm band.

Back in 1997, maybe 1996, there was a pirate on 89.3 out of Somerville called "Rebel Music Radio". This was before WUMD came on air so everyone and their brother used 89.3 for their pirate station. Sucked for us at WTBU since our (unlicensed, but legal) frequency was also 89.3 and the pirates would usually swamp our little Part 15 signal, even in the dorms. And this was before webcasting was really a viable option.

FWIW, I'd be pretty surprised if anyone was getting WAMH in or near Boston these days. WUMD is a lot closer (20 miles) and ten times the wattage (150 vs 9600w)

WUMD is the legal station that is heard, faintly, in parts of the Boston area when no pirates are on the air cutting it out. I've never heard of WAMH getting much east of Worcester. 150 watts from Amherst won't get to the Boston area (under normal conditions).

In the city and near where I live in Somerville, I usually get a weak Caribbean or Haitian pirate on 89.3, which I'm guessing is coming from the Boston inner city. I don't get Mr. "College Radio" as far east as Somerville, I've only heard him in the car in the west suburbs.

There is a Brockton pirate at 89.3 FM ,closer to WUMD backyard. 90.1,94.9, and 96.5 are other Brockton pirate frequencies.

Planet Compas 89.3 has at least 3 transmitters, Mattapan, Randolph, and Brockton.

wow and youre right - it used to be pretty weak in brookline, until the mattapan/dorchester transmitter came up.

do any of the other pirates have Networks like this?

I notice the Portuguese pirate on 89.3 in Billerica has been off for a few weeks or maybe a bit longer. The commission may have finally caught up to them after around 20 years? I see no reference to them on the FCC website where they show pirate busts.
