Superbowl (so far)

It seems like we should be past the hubbub over lip syncing. Particularly under the specific circumstances. The “back in my day they did it live” epitomizes what OK, Boomer is all about. It’s a singular spectacle, and—really—millions upon millions just don’t care. We’ve come to accept the use of vocal tracks in far lower profile settings.

This isn't entirely a generational complaint. Bruno Mars (not a Boomer) had a fantastic Superbowl performance, all performed live. That was just one of the many Halftime performances where music artists actually played and performed. I understand the interest in a visually-emphasized production which plays well on TV. It's just to me, this performance was no better or worse when Katie Perry "performed" at the Superbowl, minus the shark costumes.

No doubt that Shakira can bump and shake-it. That was impressive given her age. Jay-lo can work a stripper pole with the best of strippers. What, if anything does that have to do with their talents as musical artists? Zero. Eye candy only.

Just out of interest, how did people on here watch? Online, OTA or 'traditional' cable?

OTA

My audio disappeared almost totally during the halftime pole dance but otherwise video and audio OK throughout.[/QUOTE]

The old fashioned way, with an antenna. Fortunately, KSAZ-TV, our local Fox station on RF 10, simulcasts on RF 26 via sister station KUTP, so I can watch it with an indoor antenna.

That's kind of what she does. If you book her, that's what you're gonna get.

I’d suggest they’re performers, not just musical. Showmanship is part of the spectacle, not secondary to it.

I’ve seen more than a few “pole” dancing studios/classes that have zero to do with “strippers.” The fact that it may be a common prop for said stripping doesn’t negate the remarkable skills/talent of someone like J-Lo, nor mean anyone else who chooses to use it is emulating a stripper. It’s just dancing.

What did Elvis’ hip swivel have to do with his
music? Jagger’s moves? Price’s moves?

Halftime to me was dull, yes the eye candy was nice but the performance itself was not as great as other performances. The show seemed to be 5 minutes longer than it should have been.

The game itself started out slow but was great in the 4th quarter. Production wise I didn't see anything special from any other Fox broadcast. CBS seemed to have more goodies last year.

Kansas City is celebrating this morning!
I thought it was a great game. Back and forth, but Jimmy Garopolo choked when he needed it in the 4th.
Halftime show was OK. All of J-Lo's biggest hits, and a lot of wild and crazy fans.
Commercials? Mixed. Bryan Cranston's The Shining ripoff for Mountain Dew was amusing. Not so much Pepsi and their blatant rap ripoff of Paint it Black which I think is an insult to my intelligence along with Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones, who put all that time to producing the hit in 1966. Doritos for ruining the western atmosphere with another stupid rap song.

I actually didn't mind Google and the Loretta commercial, and I thought the Masked Singer promo with the toads (while I don't watch it) was great. 25 years ago those Budweiser frogs premiered - 'bud,' 'weis', 'er.' FOX got creative for once.

Had to watch it on the ole reliable DVR after missing the whole game working. I was up until 1am watching a game and thankfully no one spoiled me the results before hand...

Oh, is that what that was? I missed seeing the advertiser. All I was thinking was there's THAT song again. Not that it's "just another song" since it was probably the most popular song of the past year.

Billy Ray Cyrus: "I ain't dancin'".

Ratings for the Super Bowl is out

The game posts its first year-to-year increase in five years, and 'The Masked Singer' scores big after the game.
The Super Bowl scored its first ratings increase in five years, with just under 100 million viewers on average watching Fox's broadcast Sunday.

The game drew an average of 99.9 million viewers and a 41.7 household ratings, both slight upticks from CBS' broadcast of Super Bowl LIII in 2019 (98.2 million, 41.1). Per Fox Sports, a Spanish-language simulcast on Fox Deportes and streaming on Fox, NFL and Verizon platforms boosted the average viewership to 102 million, a very small increase on last year's multiplatform audience of 101.7 million.

Super Bowl LIV was fairly competitive throughout, with the Kansas Chiefs staging a fourth-quarter comeback that saw them turn a 10-point deficit into a 31-20 victory over the San Francisco 49ers. Still, the game came in under 100 million viewers for its primary broadcast for the second straight year after a nine-year run where it topped 100 million.

I thought the ad's were pretty good I liked Google ad, Olay, Coke ad etc. I enjoyed the game it was pretty entertaining and the Chiefs coming back and wining there 2ND SB congrats to them I watched on cable.

The problem the NFL has is finding a musical performer who can reach everyone in their audience without alienating people. With music becoming more fragmented, there are fewer options that will work for the halftime show.

isn't Elvis Presto looking for work?

What was wrong with the traditional halftime - a marching band. There are a few college bands that put on a very good show or you could do an abbreviated "battle of the bands".

We don't need the disgusting crap we've had for the past few years. I actually had to explain to my 8-year old granddaughter what a stripper is!!!! Next year I'm taking her to Dairy Queen during half time.

That's really only appropriate for college football. You don't see that kind of thing in pro football.

Im sure the kids at DQ don't dress inappropriately.

A marching band? Is that a serious proposition?

We did have a traditional halftime show. One with recognizable pop stars and a great deal of showmanship. That’s what’s become the expected norm.

And no one was forced to explain what a “stripper” was based on the show itself. That wasn’t actually a thing that happened. Commentary and snide remarks outside of the show by those who lack an understanding of the culture, and perhaps pop music, are not the responsibility of the performers.

Because sexy sells. Unless they're naked, marching bands aren't sexy.

Maroon 5 the prior year wasn't disgusting. They weren't very good, but wouldn't call them disgusting. To be fair, there have been some really good halftime shows, one 'wardrobe malfunction', and some ho-hum performances.

Not sure why you had to explain what a Stripper was. There was no mention of it in the show.
