TBS, TNT, truTV, CBS - NCAA March Madness

I wonder how much CBS will be hurt by not being able to air regional action.... will someone on the east coast want to watch Wofford and BYU? When the Eye Network had it exclusively they could air the games so that there was some local interest... I bet the ratings will not be as high as last year.

Apparently in Houston, "The CBS Evening News" with Katie Couric was preempted for an extra half-hour of Local News. I was wondering if you've got CBS News with Katie, or More Local News in your area. wherever you live.

The CBS Evening News did not air in Phoenix (Price is Right 2-3, local news 3-4). It probably does not air at all. TPIR is probably used as filler for the West Coast, because another local hour is not needed at 2.

Incidentally, normally you can go from 4 to 7 in Phoenix and someone is airing local news. Today that would have been 3 to 6:30.

@taylorjsdad: A good example of that would be WFSB-TV (CBS) channel 3 of Hartford. The University of Connecticut win over Bucknell aired on TNT. There was a recent attempt by US Rep. Joe "Don't call me Patrick Stewart" Courtney, who's district covers the U-Conn campus in Storrs, CT, to get the game moved to WFSB so everybody who wanted to could see it. We have some of the highest rates of cable penetration in the entire country, so his idea was squashed.

Looking at the overnight numbers if I were CBS I would not be happy. Around 5 million for the 8 and 9 PM hours and only 4.15 million for the 10 PM hour... how much did CBS pay for the tournament?

I know I will be watching Tru TV tonight to see my alma mater.

Given their choice of games (BYU-Wofford? Who cares outside of Utah, and parts of Arizona & South Carolina?), I can see why their ratings went into the tank.

Who made the game decisions? Somebody at Turner? They're getting the best of this deal so far. The only CBS game with any national interest at all is North Carolina-LIU Brooklyn. Their others (Texas-Oakland, Arizona-Memphis, and Georgia-Washington) are only of interest to their own regions. The Turner channels have all the #1 seeds.

If they paid well less than they would have paid solo, knowing full well the audience would be diluted with four games available everywhere, there's not necessarily a reason to be unhappy.

Anybody else find it weird that truTV now has sports. The other Turner networks have had sports before. TNT has had NBA games for years, and TBS's involvement in sports dates back to its Superstation days when it was WTBS. With their recent comedy rebranding I would have thought they wanted to get out of sports. And then you have truTV which seems like it would be the last place for live sports.

It's not weird at all considering the existence of the Turner Sports division dating back to the 80s. Sitcom comedy is merely TBS's 'calling card', just as crime dramas have been for TNT...and to some extent, CBS. Turner (the Time Warner company) has faithfully re-upped or upgraded their previous arrangements with the NBA and MLB, going beyond just telecasts of Braves to all MLB, carrying the baseball playoffs.

The fact that they've never previously used truTV for sports probably has more to do with 1) maintaining the previous 'Court TV' format and 2) that channel not being in full ownership by Turner/Time Warner until 2006.

Well, it seems as if a lot of people managed to find truTV, if this article is any indication:
http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/20...ivision-i-men’s-basketball-championship/86041

Game #1 featured UNC Asheville vs. Arkansas-Little Rock (6:30 p.m. – 9:24 p.m. ET) and delivered a 0.8 U.S. HH rating and 1,200,000 total viewers, while Game #2 featured Clemson vs. UAB (9:45 p.m. – 12:02 a.m. ET) and delivered a 0.9 U.S. HH rating and 1,354,000 total viewers.

Oh, and the TWC in NYC has added truTV in HD on Ch. 779

The impressiveness of this ratings bump should not be understated. The NCAA 'first round' more viewers leaving the main ESPN network to a lesser distributed channel, one with no previous (IIRC) sports coverage. One could fairly attribute the ratings increase to the modified tourney format if they wanted, but we know there were sports fans who had to search their paper or digital guides to find truTV--and they apparently did.

Long term (for the next 13 years?), CBS is probably just fine with the ratings. Otherwise, they could have very realistically started to lose major money on these telecasts, or worse--lose all post-season coverage to ESPN, ABC, ESPN2, and probably ABC Family. There's no way CBS could have provided this mix of coverage without a partner.

The fact that the actual Final Four telecasts will now alternate annually between CBS and TBS should've confirmed that.

Still, its not as if CBS Sports is being marginalized. Its 'heritage' in covering the NCAAT (theme music, NYC studio coverage, announcing teams) is essentially being extended across three other channels. And because its Turner talent helping out, we've got the return of a broadcast legend in Marv Albert calling live games, and the most liked NBA studio analysts (Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith, and Hall of Famer Charles Barkley) recapping them.

Quite frankly, given the meltdown mode that ESPN basketball analysts were in after Selection Sunday--I'm kinda glad those guys aren't involved. Be honest--how many of you are really missingthe tired schtick of 'Duke Vitale' and the smugness of 'Jay Bias' right now? I wouldn't guess that many... :D

I wished CBS could probably use Dickie V right about now, baby....

But Seriously, In the year 2016 The NCAA Elite 8 & Final 4 Games will be going to TBS exclusively, with the 2016 NCAA Final Four to be played over at Reliant Stadium in Houston-Which is the site of this year's Final Four. CBS will be carrying The NCAA Elite 8 & Final 4 Games in odd-numbered years starting in 2017 and beyond, while TBS covers it in the even-numbered years and beyond starting in 2016 .

that would get me so fast to the clicker away from CBS, but on to other things

I noticed CBS isn't renting Jay Bilas this year from ESPN, probably because of the Turner tie in.

Turner has partnered with all Big Four networks in covering sports: ABC-ESPN (NBA and NASCAR, plus NFL in the 1990s), NBC (NBA and NASCAR), Fox (TBS MLB), and CBS (NCAA). Its sports history is quite rich, including every major sport (NHL hockey was local-only however), NASCAR, and golf coverage.

Turner has all the #1 seeds because #1's vs. #16's are rarely that competitive, you can see that right now with the last 2 blowouts...

I wouldn't say that my Jayhawks "blew out" the mighty Boston Terriers. I think TBS sensed the game would be close for a while, giving it the 6:50 ET slot. The other #1 seeds played in the mid-afternoon slots.

I've been MMOD at work - much better quality than the SD TV on my desk.

With MLB PLayoffs FOX has their own annoucers and TBS uses their own annoucers plus different graphics for both networks unlike the set up for the NCAA March Madness. Isn't it also the same with NASCAR coverage, TNT has their own annoucers while ESPN uses their own.

I have had a ball the last 2 days...however have developed a mild case of "remote thumb." Only thing missing is Dick Enberg.....However, hearing Marv Albert was a pleasant surprise this afternoon. The bar across the top of the screen is great.

From what I could research online in the last 30 seconds, I believe this is Marv Albert's first time broadcasting NCAA Tournament games since NBC last had the games in 1981. That was a generation ago, folks!

BTW, someone asked about Dick Engberg--he's busy with work for the San Diego Padres. And Jay Bias...er, Bilas' contract with ESPN is what's keeping him off the new Turner Sports/CBS Sports partnership.

Ratings information from Thursday:

http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/20...hh-rating-and-7-4-million-total-viewers/86270

CBS Sports and Turner Sports’ exclusive second-round coverage of the 2011 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship across TBS, CBS, TNT and truTV on Thursday, March 17 combined to deliver an average fast national household rating/share of 5.0 U.S. HH rating/12.2 share, up 19% over CBS Sports’ 2010 coverage, according to Nielsen Fast Nationals. CBS, TBS, TNT and truTV averaged 7.4 million total viewers, up 16% over CBS Sports’ 2010 viewership.

They didn't give the breakdown by channel but did give out the numbers breakdown among adults and men.

CBS will be OK from first glance. Once people get used to the new format, look for those numbers to even go higher next year.

Although I'm aware a theme update was due with the new CBS/Turner partnership, I do NOT like the updated version of the CBS college basketball theme music that debuted with the onset of March Madness. But I wonder if this updated theme will be used next season and beyond in CBS' regular season college hoops coverage.
